I broke my mtb's rear derailleur bracket while passing a tree obstacle this afternoon... Does anyone know if you can buy this part loose or is it part of the rear derailleur?

It's a Shimano Deore XT derailleur and the bracket that broke is the part attaching the derailleur to the bike's frame...

I suppose you mean the dropout hanger. They normally fit into a recess on the frame and is attached by a nut similar to a chainblade nut. You should be able to buy this piece from your LBS or the agents that supplied your bike. They make these things to break so buy two when you do get the dropout in question. Make sure nothing else has been bent as your derraileur will not function properly if it is out of alignment.
