I recently dusted off my Raleigh RM2.0 bought in 2002/2003 for general riding around. Now that I started riding it on jeep tracks and some single tracks I realize that it needs some SERIOUS upgrading or replacing. It weighs 15 kg's and has the following components:

  • 7005 Custom tubing (XL - 23") weight unknown - I am 1.94 m tall
  • SR Suntour XC-60 fork
  • SR Suntour CW-XCC150-PB cranks
  • Alivio RD
  • Some Shimano FD (could be 515)
  • ALEXRIMS DM18 wheels - 24 speed cluster

  • Tektro V-Brakes
  • Some kind of Shimano combination brake lever/shifters
Is it worth upgrading components onto the frame or should I just go for a completely "new" setup (I would probably buy second hand)? The frame looks quite well built and strong; although I could be wrong. I have attached a photo.20090503_102518_RM20_00.JPG

This isn't high spec at all, and to be honest, you'd have to replace almost all the kit... Look to replace it... Spend R4000 on a 2nd hand bike ( off the Hub of curse!) and you WONT be disappointed!

If you can't find an XL bike buy one of a diff size and look to put ALL the parts onto that frame... Or buy another XL frame There's a Schwinn Mesa frame (XL) on sale somewhere.Scoe2009-05-03 12:18:55

Vote REPLACE - not even the frame is really worth working with. Your fork is more a weight that has some ability to absorb bumps, but in a very bad way. The sticker on the back if it is still there says it is not intended for serious downhills or something equally exciting.

It will work out in the long run much more costly to build up something from what you have, rather hunt a 2nd hand bike with at least a Rockshox Dart 2 on it.

Clap Thanks for the input guys. I thought that the points you made were the solution; just had to check. Unfortunately, secondhand XL bikes are pretty hard to find so I guess looking for decent smaller one would be the answer.

However, can get a DEMO Jamis Dakota Sport for a decent price. Seems like a good bike to start with.

Yeah, XL isn't common. A friend had to buy a smaller size and put it on a frame he bought and resold the original frame. He had to replace the cables, but was still cost effective
