PappaBear Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Ok, since this years epic I've been wondering about double chainrings on a mtb instead of the normal tripple.... What is the advantages? Why would you prefer double? What is the tooth count options? Can someone give me some info? Also, what brands are available?

Weight Weenie Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Nope, talk to any XCO rider and its not as much about the weight, but about having a straighter chainline so you can use more gears without crossing the chain. Also shifts better. In a xc race you need to shift and respond quickly and I think it helps being able to keep the chain on the same sprocket but just shifting down at the front for example. I think with the up down nature of xc, there is more momentum and the pro guys are on feather light bikes and very fit so they can run 2 rings. They don't need 3 like us mere mortels hehe.
