I'm just curious, I have no idea what my back brake system's caliper attachment is called, anyway to make a long story short I ordered a IS mount for the back, my question is will I have any problems fitting either system and will I need funny spacers and things? I used to work on V breaks and this will be my first attempt to build a new area bike.

Brake calipers are generally all Post Mount and if you are buying new brakes, they should come with the mounting hardware unless you are putting on bigger rotors.

What Thug said, but to add to it, most frames are still IS so unless you have one of the few that are Post Mount, your IS brakes should fit without an adapter. What sucks is that IS mounted brakes need to be shimmed(part of the included hardware Thug mentioned) which is just a bit trickier to setup than PM brakes.

Also, with IS, if you go to a bigger rotor you'd need to change the caliper as they are AFAIK made size specific. At least that's the case with Magura IS brakes and older Hopes.

Post Mount is generally better because of the ease of setup and the fact you can fit them to any frame/fork/rotor size with the correct adapter.

Yup, what MintSauce said, plus:

I have XTR IS brakes - took me a while to find the right adapter to run a 180mm rotor in front. If you do have IS brakes, the KCNC adapters for the Manitou forks works 100%.

Post mount is no prob, you just adjust the caliper, IS does need the shims, but some LBS' I have asked, gave me some for free. Did buy a couple in the end, so if you are in the Cpt area, I can help you adjust/fit them and give you some shims if you needWernervdmerwe2009-09-24 01:55:36

Ok thanks guys. Will start building the new bike within the next week, then I still need to build my wheels and to get the right spoke length is turning out to be a bit of a nightmare.
