Stem replacement (road) advice needed.

When a stem is replaced what do I need to keep in mind?

Does the saddle, H/Bars need to be adjusted?

Or is it just the height of the drops that need to be the same?

You never touch saddle position when changing anything on the cockpit. The two has nothing to do with each other. If you change saddles, post ,pedal makes or shoes then you need to re-asses.

If the combination of headtube angle and stem angle result in absolute 0 degree rise, then there is nothing gonna change except reach. But that is never the case. But the choice of stem angles are so limited and the difference in angle that a shorter stem makes is so small that you do not need to bother.

Look at this diagram.

Say you've got a 110mm stem with 1cm rise (second line from the bottom). And you want to change to a 90mm stem. The bars will affectively drop about 2mm. You can compensate for this by raising the stem by placing an extra 2mm spacer below it if you have space on the fork steerer or tilt you bars a bit up to raise the brake lever. The latter will only fix the problem if you are on the hoods and not when hands are on the top or drops.

Thanks Mampara, so in other words I do ot really need to worry about anything? I can just measure from the ground to top of hoods and make sure the height is the same when the new stem is on?

Been a great help.

I would say to the top of the bars. By just lifting the levers you only fixed 1 position but that is if space on the steerer allows this.
