Gt1 vs merida matts tfs 400?

My friend is looking at buying one of these bikes. he can get the 2010 gt for 8k and the tfs for 8.5k at lbs. I currently have a gt1 2009. I dont want to give a bias opinion. Is it maybe possible to get one me these bikes cheaper some where else or maybe another bike for that price. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks
