Parts for old frame

My mate has been given an old D/S Trek frame. It has a Fox rear shock and Manitou Fork. Looks like middle to bottom range stuff. It needs EVERYTHING else. Wheels, groupset, bars, seat, "V" brakes, etc...

So not wanting to feed strawberries to swine what components would match this bike? He plans to give this MTB thing a go and if he enjoys it (which he will) he'll upgrade to a better bike at a later stage but I think this will be a good bike to start on.
