Afternoon all,

Need a little advice, i tore an intercostal muscle about 6 months ago, it healed and i could ride then i injured it again fixing my car. I now can't ride because everytime i get my breathing rate up it pulls. Physio is at a loss and hasn't seen this injury before...and apparently its really hard to train/strengthen.

Has anyone else out there had to deal with this?

Most gutting as two weeks before it got bad again i brought myself a new carbon hardtail, only been round the block since!

In the last few weeks there was somebody on here selling a breathing exerciser.

For most peeps it looked like a bunch of hooey to me, basically it was snorkel mouthpiece with a variable airflow restrictor. The idea being that it worked the diagram and the pentecostal mussels.

It may offer some benefit to you.

This advice is worth exactly what you paid for it!

Neural mobilization deals with exercising of the neural tissue through manipulation (as far as I understand)For example, there are such things as neural stretches. The theory behind this is by exercising the neural pathway or nerves through stretching you improve speed of activation, prevent neural fatigue etc. Needling is dry needling which is a form of rehab that physios will use frequently. It is similar to accupuncture just on different anatomical points etc.

Perhaps you should try another physio

If you know where the nerves are for the intercostals you will know that you probably won't be able to get a needle anywhere near there... How did you tear an intercostal might I ask...and why only one...that seems quite difficult to do...

why would one want to get a needle near the nerve that supplies an intercostal?
