I recon guys and girls are alot different on this matter. I rode a second hand 15kg Giant Boulder for over a year. I did the long route races, a 500km tour in Nam over 5 days, about 12 hours training a week on it. It was cheap to maintain and tought me a lot of good habits like early gear selection, picking good lines, how to deal with chain suck etc. I only realised what the fuss was about when I upgraded to a 10.5kg racing machine a year later. I had a good appreciation for my new bike every time I got on her.

The risk is that you girl feels pressurised to go riding because she has an expensive bike. I set myself a goal (5 day tour through Nam) and only upgraded after I reached my goal.

Yo bro :) as you know i started on a Silverback Reno for 3K and quite right still loved the bike, but hence forth cost me a fortune in upgrading. :)

Your view makes a lot of sense if your main goal is racing, as you know I smoke too much, drink too much but i love hitting the trails on weekends and some weekdays, and for that I want the maximum comfort, and gear I can trust. Also not too sound sexist but men are dumb enough to tackle the worst singletrack on a cheapie and survive, girls on the otherhand I have noticed don't always have that built in level of self mutliation.

My girl is now a lot more comfortable on the rough stuff now that she has a bike that handles better and is more forgiving. She's not quite there on the bravery scale yet, but I have us booked for a dirtopia workshop that will hopefully elevate her confidence level to the point of self destruction being a natural option :D

And lastly dont tell her what it costs then she will never know you just spent 8k on a new fork.

So you bought the shock, nice, what you get? The GT Avalanche 3.0 is another good starter bike, my missus loves hers, the 2010 models should be fairly cheap now :)

HAHA see i made the mistake to educate my girl so Ill never get away with an 8K fork without being castrated. Busy shock shopping now, CWC has some really good deals on the Reba 2011 which i suspect will be good enough for now ..........
