Rear Shock Length Changes

Hi

 

What are the negatives on changing the rear shock on a frame, to a slightly longer or shorter shock. I currently am looking at replacing my rear shock (9' x 2.75), but am finding it difficult to get the 9' eye to eye bodies.

 

Frame is a GT DHi (2001)
