Hi Guys,

I was given this very old 16" - wheeled kids bike by a family member and would like some advice.

Firstly, what make is it. According to the family member it is possible that it is up to sixty years old. It has definitely been re-painted at some stage and the only markings I could find on the components is the saddle, that is stamped "Cycsad Genuine leather 107" and the rear hub, that is marked "Favorit".

Secondly, is it worth it and even possible to restore it? Are replacement parts readily available? I have looked around on the web and replacement parts for very old kids bikes don't seem to be flying around.

Thirdly, if it is not worth it or possible to restore it, can I build it up as a cool single speed for my three-year old son for when he is a little older. Will modern parts like headset, bb, hubs etc fit it?

I will appreciate all the advice I can get.

It is a matter of sentiment, but I say, don't bother. Those wheels are not the right wheels for the frame, the saddle is most certainly not from that bike and the pedals are new, of an recent cheapie.

The lampholder (pictured second) has no distinguishing cut-outs. In those days the cut-outs represented the brand's logo. This one is generic.

You'll find parts to fit it but you'll have to scrounge around in bike shops that operate at a different level. Look for bike shops in dodgy parts of town that also sell sewing machines, fishing tackle, ploughs, gin traps, bokkoms and 50kg bags of seed.

I agree with JB. I regularly rebuild old clinkers but what you got there is definitely not worth it. If you really that keen on a bike project to restore for your youngster, shop around at 2nd or pawn stores, with some patience you'll pick up something awesome I'm sure. Just out of interest, it looks like the seat stay's are bolted to the seat post, looks like a little shine there?

Thanks guys! I suspected as much.

JB, if you say the wheels are not the correct ones, do you mean these are too small? Should it be 18"?

EigerSA, you are correct. The seat stays are bolted to the chain stays and the seat tube. Made it easy to remove the chain.
