Cederberg Ride

Hi All, I have been paging through the Best MTB Rides in SA book and the route mentioned in the Cederberg caught my attention. Have any of you done this particular ride and if so is it worth the effort and do you have any tips/hints with regards to the ride. In case you dont have the book the ride is as follows: It starts from the Algeria Camp site mid way between Citrusdal and Clanwilliam in the Western Cape and does a loop via Wuppethal back around via Clanwilliam back to the Algeria Camp site mainly on dirt roads. According to the book it is around 172 km and should be split over a couple of days. Thanks in advance.

I have done that route in September 2009. We started at Sanddrif. First day to Wuperthal and camped over at Mertenhof. Second day over the Packhyus pass, through Clanwilliam and stayed over at Keurbos and the last day past Algeria, up the Uitkyk pass back to Sanddrif. Total distance about 170km. It was one of the best tours I have done with friends.

 

Note that at that stage they were busy tarring large sections between the Wuperthal turnoff and Clanwilliam. This is not a all gravel route anymore.

Most of this being just dirt roads...I would not rate it as the best there is....yes, the scenery is great and the distance is substantial....BUT rather stay over at Sanddrif as a homebase and make day excursions around the place.

 

There are plenty of off-road single track now and great twee spoor jeep tracks!

Many of these are new...you can splice a few of then together and get 60 -70km out of a ride.

 

I've done ~100km in Dec while camping at Sanddrif and thoroughly enjoyed the diversity of these tracks....some sandy; some technical up and down...never a dull moment!! I cannot say that i would have enjoyed the trip just on the main dirt road as much...
