Hi all.

The title says it all.

Not a fan of clipless. What pedals should I buy for my road bike for use with normal shoes.

Ghost, my boy

,just a conformation on what most other have said so far . I agree that clipless is not on ,I recently had to refit flat clipless pedals to my training bike on the IDT cause the Misses also wants to spin every now and then just to stay in shape ,I therefore spin in the evenings with these pedals ,and I work much harder pedaling with these babies!!!! I can only do about 45 mins hard spining now with tekkies on, as aposed to a easy hour with clip-on shoes! My 2c

Noted with thanks Charl.

Is there a different technique to pedaling with a clipless pedal, or does it just come naturally?

It would seem I am going to be the only dude with flat pedals on a road bike in SA.

Is it such a bad call?

What clipless would be good for a beginner?

It depends what you want to do with the bike. If you want to ride to the shop and buy bread and milk, then get flat pedals.

If you ride because you're a cyclist and want to get fit/fast/whatever, then you need clipless pedals. It will take you a few minutes to get used to them.

I'm recommending spd pedals. They are intended for mountain biking, but you can still use them on the roadbike. They are easy to clip in and out of. They are more comfortable/easier than road pedals.

Many thanks stewie.

I'm not a competitive rider, but I am starting to do 25km rides on my MTB and looking to go longer.

I'll take a look at those spd's. Are you recommending them for MTB and road?

If you ride both mtb and road, then I recommend you use them for both. Then you only need one pair of shoes and you'll be comfortable with them.

I don't use them though, but especially for someone starting out, I think they'll be best for you.

Thanks again stewie.

Can I ask you; do you mean these:

or these:

I mean the ones in the second link. Can't open the first link, but it seems that they refer to shimano road pedals.

You get different models SPDs, but the M520(as in your link) will be a good choice.

An update.

Got the 540's.

Got the shoes.

(With apologies to Sam Hill and patches.)

Yet try 'em out.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks to everyone for the advise.
