  1. Hi guys

I followed up with race organiser, Wynand. A new route profile has been uploaded but is not yet complete.

Riders will have a much better experience with the addition of about 12km new and exciting tracks inside King's Kloof.

They're also busy preparing another 7km on the 40km route which means the final route profile should be ready by around next week Wednesday

  2. I did not think it was technical before and hope we'll have a fun ride with the new route. It sounds a bit boring now. But we will see on the 7th. Can you upload a map for us to see the sections in Kings that will be included??

    Hi Borborygmi

I've contacted the ASG Events department to try and get the map you're looking for

  3. Exciting route overhaul for Pennypinchers Silverstar MTB Challenge

Wonderful cooperation with land owners and lots of trail building over the past few months has resulted in a brand new route for the Pennypinchers Silverstar Mountain Bike Challenge, which takes place next Saturday on 7 September.

Entries for the event close on Sunday. To enter go to www.asgevents.co.za or click here

The 40km ride, for the first time in the history of the event, remains entirely at the bottom of the Krugersdorp mountain range.

This means riders won’t have to climb the famous Hillsnacks ascent at the start of the event and the entire 18km section on the top of the mountain isn’t in the mix anymore.

This will make the route infinitely more ride-able and a lot less daunting. Some of the sections on top of the mountain were very technical and demanding in the past and certainly only aimed at the top echelon of mountain-biker with a range of skills.

The new route is a lot less demanding (it has 600 metres of vertical ascent compared to the 850 metres on the old route), and has a nice splash of technical sections in the mix. It has a wonderful variety of single track, jeep track and gravel roads with strong climbing challenges and wonderful downhill rewards.

The old route had served the event well for the past six years, but the organisers felt is was time for a change and have been working relentlessly over the past two months, negotiating with land owners and creating new riding terrain and trails at the bottom of the mountain.

The result is really satisfactory and the organisation believes that the riding experience in the event has been substantially heightened.

A large part of the route building for this year’s event is the result of a colaboration with King’s Kloof Mountain Bike park on which 15km of new trails have been created specifically for the Silverstar Challenge.

The bulk of the new trails are on the flat and easier side of King’s Kloof, on the northern side of Hendrik Potgieter opposite the Laurentia Farm Stall.

The event starts off on the tarred road descent down to the Pinehaven crossing and then immediately ducks left into the bush on a picturesque piece of land that has been earmarked for a revolutionary “Green” development. Look out for the concept “Green House” that’s been built on this section.

The ride makes its way on some jeep track and gravel roads towards the Laurentia Flower Farm and King’s Kloof. The famous Laurentia Flower Farm presents the second waterpoint among some real floral splendour.

The first bit on King’s Kloof is the toughest before riders go to the other side via a culvert. Here it’s 10km of fast riding among the orchards and their vast nursery.

Exiting the farm, you'll ride through yet a nursery and enter into the Honingklip plots via a 1km single track servitude past the spaza shop. Then it’s onto a few hundred metres of provincial road, which includes a 500 metre climb, before riders hit single track and jeep track on the escarpment which takes them all the way back to Silverstar.

A quick duck underneath the R28 via another culvert brings you out right at Silverstar.

The route really has the perfect mix and is ride-able throughout. It has a lot of variation and strong uphill challenges with vast downhill rewards.

It will be a much faster ride than in previous editions.

The 20km ride follows the same route out and back as the 40km but riders do a smaller loop inside King’s Kloof.

The Pennypinchers Silverstar Mountain Bike Challenge, presented by ASG, is in its sixth staging and it’s great to welcome new title sponsors Pennypinchers on board.

It’s courtesy of their sponsorship that the organisation has been able to free up budget to invest in the new route.

The ride has become known as a tough, true test of mountain biking skill. This year it boasts a route filled with varied challenges, but it has been designed to be ride-able throughout and not too demanding technically.

The Pennypinchers Silverstar Mountain-bike Challenge undoubtedly showcases some of the most beautiful spots and awesome riding terrain in Gauteng.

Although nestled in urban surrounds, the route is one of the most picturesque you’ll find anywhere in South Africa. Although you’re close to the city, you can truly feel part of nature and be spoiled with unsurpassed views and great riding.

With Silverstar Casino as host venue, it all adds up to a hassle free, enjoyable experience.

Other partners in the event include Global ASP (connectivity) and HIGH 5 nutrition.

Situated only 45 minutes north of Pretoria on the N1 Highway, Sondela Nature Reserve again plays host to the Sondela SuperClassic road race on 26 October 2013.

The road event presents two distances on a flat and fast course – a perfect last training ride two weeks prior to the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge.

The long ride covers 104km while a 40km option is also on offer. Both distances are on flat routes and will provide a good moral booster before the Cycle Challenge. The roads are quiet and the road surface good.

Sondela has been a popular bushveld getaway for many years and the resort excels in hosting mass participation cycling events, evidenced by the big Sondela Mountain Bike Challenge, which attracted 1500 riders in winter this year.

Management are now putting it all in place for a wonderful family weekend on 26 October at Sondela with lots of kids entertainment, a massive beer tent and all sorts of delicious eats and drinks.

A controlled bike park is available for riders. Participants will receive wrist tags at registration which will ensure safe keeping of bikes while riders enjoy the festivities over the weekend.

The event starts at the entrance to Sondela, which is off the main off-ramp into Bela Bela, and ample parking is cordoned off from the Sondela entrance back towards the N1 Highway.

Ample parking ushers will be on duty to help riders get parked and ready and they will look after vehicles during the course of the day.

    Route description:

There are only two right turns on the long ride and only one on the short distance ride, which makes the going very safe. The roads are also quiet.

The 104km route goes out towards Settlers on the R516. It goes through Settlers before turning right back onto the R516.

Riders carry on straight with this road until the Crecy Road left turn. The lovely smooth road surface continues to the T-junction where the route takes a left turn again onto the R33. This section of road does have potholes which have been filled, but riders have to be aware of uneven road surface.

Just after the 70km mark another left turn awaits before the route joins up with the R516 left and right back towards Sondela.

The short ride goes out to Settlers and turns immediately left back on the R516 towards Sondela.

There is one waterpoint on the short ride at the R516 joining and the long ride boasts three waterpoints.

As with all ASG Events, event medical specialists Helivac are on hand to look after cyclists medical requirements and emergencies that might arise.

The local Think Bike marshals will be on hand to ensure safe passage for cyclists and the local metro police have a big presence on race day to assist.

Pretoria Boys High 24 Hour MTB Challenge, sponsored by Barden Tyres

ASG is proud to announce that we are presenting the Pretoria Boys High 24hr MTB Challenge on Saturday 7 September 2013.

The event is hosted over a 24hr period and boasts a vibrant race village and a varied track with a surprising array of different riding features as riders traverse through Pretoria Boys High's lush premises on a 7km circuit.

Entrants set up camp on the rugby fields at the start where there will be all sorts of entertainment, music and lots to eat and drink as well as warm showers.

Prizes will include an array of ASG brands specific to mountain biking as well as other sponsored products.

The 24 Hour format is unique as it combines endurance and day/night riding in a social environment.

It's a massive relay where solo riders and teams of 2, 4, 6 or 8 (and a fun 20 rider team section) compete against one another by completing as many laps as possible in a 24hr time frame (relay style, with only one team member out on the track at any one time).

To enable all Pretoria Boys High supporters an opportunity to get into the action, we are also hosting teams consisting of 20 members - anyone can come and do a loop or two!

For the racing snakes team tactics are key in a 24 hour, deciding who should ride when, how many laps each rider should complete at any one time, and when to take a break for rest, sleep and nutrition.

Solo riders - those mad-hatters who ride through the night on their own - will, of course, have the ultimate bragging rights in mountain biking!

However, all teams (including solo riders) are free to decide how much or how little they ride, and how much time they prefer to spend sharing stories around their skottel braais and supporting the vast array of vendors!

The event is aimed are maximising the enjoyment and experience of all participants.

There is ample variety in terms of terrain and features and the route is rideable throughout.

If you can't make the full 24 hours, join us on the course from 14h00 to 20h00 and take part in the 6hr Challenge (solo or teams of 2 or 4). This separate event runs on the same course with the same rules as the 24hr event.

Whilst shorter in duration, it still enables participants to experience the thrill of day and night relay riding.

C'est la vie for Winelands race

Between ravaging fires and devastating floods, Mother Nature did her best - or worst - to derail this year's Rudy Project Val de Vie Mountain Bike Challenge in September.

But the hardy organisers from ASG Events pressed on and the event will finally roll out across 21 farms in the Cape Winelands on November 24.

"It was a difficult decision to postpone the event but a necessary one" says event director and route planner Darren Herbst. "This is a special race, but to ensure the safety of riders and the quality of the event we had to call it off."

The new date means the event will serve as an ideal curtain raiser for Africa Bike Week, which follows in Stellenbosch.

"The Western Cape will become a cycling mecca for that week; it's going to be an amazing time."

Herbst says the trouble started earlier this year with runaway fires that destroyed the trees and vegetation on the mountainsides. "This affects not only the ecosystems but also water retention capabilities."

Add to that a few hundred millimeters of rain in the two weeks leading up to race day and the scene was set for a disaster of epic proportions.

"We spent months searching and manicuring trails in the area and about 70 per cent of these were washed away or damaged beyond repair. Sections of the route just disappeared under water. It was crazy!"

The intrepid route builders adopted an appropriate c'est la vie attitude and pressed on with the necessary repairs and changes as soon as the ground began to dry out.

"This event has so many special features and we're confident that 99 per cent of them will be ready in time for the event" says Herbst. "This area is like an oil painting"

A special feature is that the race crosses fenced private property, which is not accessible at any other time.

Herbst says both the 30km and 60km routes, which start and finish at the exclusive Val de Vie Polo Club, are aimed at the social rider. "But make no mistake, it isn't easy"

The total elevation for the routes is 300m and 950m respectively. The highlights include some world-class single track and spectacular descents as riders criss-cross more than 30 vineyards and a secured section of a Cape Nature protected area.

"A section of the route also goes through the Drakenstein Prison where Nelson Mandela was held. Cyclists will get to see where he lived and also ride through a working prison"

Herbst says water points will once again be talking points. "We have teams from Virgin Active, Vrede Foundation, Raw Nutrition, Scheckter's Organic Energy, some of the landowners and a host of others en route to make the stops fun. Believe me, there's not just water and energy drinks"

The Val de Vie Market will keep spectators occupied while they wait for the riders to cross the finish line.

More than a thousand cyclists took part in the inaugural event last year and Herbst says the organisers are expecting "significant growth" this year.

The new title sponsor, Rudy Project, which supports some of the top international cycling teams, will be giving away R150 000 worth of prizes including cash, Rudy Project eyewear and helmets, iON action cameras and more.

Riders who signed up for the original date but cannot be on the start line in November are eligible for a refund, says Herbst.

    Prize Money: R50 000

R10 of every entry is donated to the Cancer Foundation of South Africa

The 8th edition of the Bestmed Campus2Campus SuperClassic takes place on 22 September and is hosted from the Pothefstroom Military base out and back to Ventersdorp.

Licensed riders, and open/seeded fun riders who feel up to the challenge, will cover 95km while a more manageable distance of 35km will also be on offer.

The 95km event is the perfect training ride for riders taking aim at the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge.

The route for the event consists of lots of flats and mild, rolling undulations but it's essentially very quick and a nice ride before the Cycle Challenge.

After the turn-around point, the final 47km are especially quick and the predominant winds predict a tailwind all the way to the finish. The road surface throughout is good.

The Bestmed Campus2Campus every year remembers a great rider and all-round nice guy. Ertjies Bezuidenhout, who won the King of the Mountains title in the Rapport Tour a magical seven times suffered a stroke at the age of 56 after completing the Carnival City Macsteel Classic in February.

Ertjies was the patron of the Campus2Campus and tragically passed way last year after suffering a stroke. Ertjies studied at North West University's Potchefstroom Campus where he earned his degree and where he also raced and earned Springbok colours.

Now in its 8th year of staging, the Campus2Campus traditionally started and finished at the NWU Campus in Vanderbijlpark. The organisers felt it was fitting last year to change and showcase the Potchefstroom Campus, alma mater of Ertjies Bezuidenhout.

The 95km will challenge the best of South Africa's professionals and a worthy winner will emerge in North West's National Classic.

    Waterpoints

There will be four waterpoints on the route at 30km, 60, 70km and 80km.

    Venue

The Military base, which is situated on the outskirts of Potch on the Ventersdorp Road, is the perfect venue to host the expected 1600 riders with ample parking. Lots of eats and drinks will also be on sale on the day.

    Registration

Mountain-biking at its best in the heart of the West Rand

2013 will see the sixth staging of the popular Pennepinchers Silverstar Mountain Bike Challenge, presented by ASG, and it's great to welcome new title sponsors Pennypinchers on board.

The ride, which takes place on 7 September 2013, has become known as a tough, true test of mountain biking skill. It boasts a route filled with varied challenges, but it's designed to be ride-able throughout and not too demanding technically.

The Silverstar Mountain-bike Challenge undoubtedly showcases some of the most beautiful spots and awesome riding terrain in Gauteng.

RIDERS WHO DON'T HAVE PERMANENT NUMBER BOARDS CAN PURCHASE A BOARD AT R35, OR THEY CAN RIDE WITH A TEMPORARY BOARD WHICH WILL BE ISSUED AT NO EXTRA COST.

    40km Route

The total ascent on the 40km event is 700 metres.

The event starts off with the traditional 2.5km tar climb up Hillsnacks which spreads the field nicely before heading left into the mountain onto Mogale Parks ground.

The 13km on the eastern side of the Hillsnacks mountain are generally regarded as the most technical of the race and once you're through this bit the ride becomes progressively faster.

It's great to have the use of this entire protected area on top of the Hillsnacks mountain and a big thanks goes to Mogale Parks for assisting. The views from the top of the mountain are spectacular and one can see the Sandton Towers in the distance and even the outskirts of Pretoria.

The event then traverses the property that is owned by the Laurentia Trust on the Northern side of the R28 as well as the old ox wagon trails which present brilliant views on a wonderfully sculpted single track descent

To get to the Laurentia side the route ducks underneath the R28, through the nursery and up a steep tarred climb. It then drops down the valley on a 2km fast single track descent and then hits the first river crossing.

This section is the start of the popular King's Kloof Mountain Bike Trail. The course only uses the easily ride-able bits inside Kings Kloof.

Then it's a gentle climb up to the back of the Krugersdorp Grave Yard and then the route winds its way down the mountain via some of the old historical ox wagon trails which the early settlers used to get to Krugersdorp.

This is the most exhilarating bit of the route, which is brush cut and cleared to perfection to provide the coolest quick downhill with spectacular views.

When you hit Hendrik Potgieter it's a sharp right and directly into the famous Laurentia Flower Farm where the second waterpoint presents itself among some real floral splendor.

5km of fast riding await at Laurentia among orchards and their vast nursery. Exiting the farm, you ride through yet a nursery and enter into the Honingklip plots via a 1km single track servitude past the spaza shop.

Then it's onto a few hundred metres of provincial road, which includes a 500 metre climb, before riders hit single track and jeep track on the escarpment which takes them all the way back to Silverstar. A quick duck underneath the R28 via another culvert brings you out right at Silverstar.

The route really has the perfect mix and is ride-able throughout. It has a lot of variation and strong uphill challenges with vast downhill rewards. For seasoned campaigners it's a fast ride.

    20km route

The 20km route is a lot less technical with very little climbing involved. It stays at the bottom of the Hillsnacks Mountain through the Heuningklip Plots before turning at Laurentia farm where it joins up with the 40km ride.
