  4. THE CALEDON TREATED OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS TO A SPOT OF FUN The breath-taking scenery, diverse landscape and quiet dirt roads of the Overberg region provided the backdrop for the 5th Annual Staalwater MTB Challenge and Spring Trail Run this weekend, 6-7 September. The fun-filled weekend was hosted by Dirtopia at The Caledon Casino, Hotel, Spa and Entertainment and catered to both amateur and advanced mountain bikers and trail runners of all ages. Those who preferred not to get their hands dirty opted for spa treatments and delicious meals instead. Meurant Botha from Dirtopia says, “This was the second year we included the Spring Trail Run which took place on Saturday (6 September). Runners were given the option of either a 7km or 15km trail run and the turn-out was nothing less than spectacular with over 100 participants taking part in the fun.” Fast becoming a favourite annual ride for mountain bikers, the Staalwater MTB Challenge saw bikers from all walks of life take on either a 15km, 37km or 60km route on Sunday (7 September). The Caledon Casino, Hotel, Spa and Entertainment Marketing Manager, Ailsa van Wyk says, “This is the 5th year we’ve hosted the Mountain Bike Challenge on the property and we were pleased to see such a great turn-out with over 500 mountain bikers participating in this year’s event.” “Luckily, the weather conditions were good and our participants did not have to deal with any additional challenges resulting from heavy rain or wind. It really was an unbelievably fun event for outdoor-loving families,” van Wyk concludes. The long distance mountain bike event was won by Dominic Calitz, followed by Jarryd Haley in second place and Craig Boyes in third. It was a tight race, as the three stayed together for most of the ride. In the ladies it was Adrian Vera, Michelle Lombardi & Anel Henn in the top three. The next big event on the calendar is the Spur MTB Classic to be held in the Helderberg on 28 September. For more information visit www.dirtopia.co.za.

Directions to the venue: Visit www.bainsmtbtrails.co.za Join the DIRTOPIA ALL MOUNTAIN ENDURO group on Facebook to stay updated on all events and info MORE ABOUT ENDUROS: The first event was held at Dirtopia MTB Festival, Greyton in December’12 and proved to be a lot of fun. We’d like to bring you more of this great riding and improve the system in the process. The concept Based on the successful Mavic Trans Provence concept the idea is to bring riding and the results linked to it back to mountain biking and away from the current endurance-only formats. That said, it is not the idea to make the race highly technical as per downhill racing, but simply to focus the competition on the trails component of the sport. And yes, perhaps your skinny tire 29’er carbon hardtail is perhaps not the best choice of bike, although the course will certainly be rideable on it! At the Dirtopia Enduro, you’ll still be climbing and even be timed on some of these sections. We will make most of the jeeptracks and roads ‘neutral’ or ‘liaison’ sections. You will still be required to ride these. The overall descent of the race will be more than the uphill. Support Waterpoint with fruit etc will be placed at a strategic point (Pepper Tree) to assist with rider support. The beauty of the format is that you can relax a bit at this station and catch your breath before tagging into the next Special Stage. Timing Timing will be managed in real-time with @trailtag and riders will check in and out of the Special stages This means that riders will enter special stages 1 by 1, so no bunfight to get trail position on the singletrack. IMPORTANT! 1. Only ride with your own TrailTag & ALL entrants must have a permanent Trail Tag 2. Wear the tag around your right wrist like a watch. Not around your ankle please. 3. The reader is powerful enough to read through arm warmers etc. Timing data streams live to the internet www.trailtag.co.za Go to Event Page

  13. Event Name: Nine-to-Five Mountain Bike Team Relay When: 16 June 2014 Where: Stellenbosch, Western Cape Category: MTB EIGHT HOURS OF WINTER MOUNTAIN BIKING NEAR STELLENBOSCH The ever popular Nine-to-Five Mountain Bike Team Relay event will take place for the eight year on Delvera Farm and will this year be held on a public holiday - Monday, 16 June. Solo riders, teams of two and teams of 4 riders will try to complete as many 7km laps as possible in the eight hour period. Normal entry costs starts from R165 per rider to R250 per rider, depending on the category with discount to Amarider members. This year you can also do the event for a charity, MES by buying a R500 per person ticket for a team of four or two riders. MES changes the heart of the city by providing opportunities to homeless and destitute communities in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. By entering a MES team you will directly support the Grow job rehabilitation project that currently provides 300 shifts for job rehabilitation per month. Teams work within the Bellville, Parow and Brackenfell areas and work includes the cleaning of graffitti, stormwater drains, road maintenance, cleaning of parks and at local public events. Beneficiaries to this project have access to developmental programmes and opportunities to excel towards permanent employment. Activate your heart today, enter a team, and allow your passion for cycling to “Change the heart of the city!” It is not necessary for team members to ride in sequence and one team member can do as many consecutive laps as they like. There should however not be more than a four lap difference between the rider with the most laps and the rider with the least number of laps at the end of the event. 17. Event Name: Amarider 100Miler & 50Miler When: 24 May 2014 Where: Malmesburry, Western Cape Category: MTB AMARIDER 100MILER & 50MILER IS A MUST-DO FOR MARATHON RIDERS You have done most marathons and tried stage racing. How about an individual one-day mountain bike ultra marathon of 160km? The scenery is beautiful in the Swartland during Autumn and the riding is not technical. Endurance riding has exploded in popularity over recent years and this year will see the sixth edition of The Amarider 100Miler taking place in Malmesbury on the 24th of May. From the humbling beginnings that grew in 2009 to what is now one of the must-do-events on the mountain biking calendar. The weather conditions play a major role in testing your endurance, as mud, wind or rain do on most outdoor events. This event will start early morning just as the sun is rising, with astounding scenery that is spellbound to keep the legs going for many hours. Only pre-entries will be accepted for both distances. Entries are limited and remember that this is a seeding event for Die Burger MTB Challenge 2014. The 160km (100Miler) route is divided into three sections of approximately 55km with two compulsory timing checkpoints. The format of the race creates perfect vantage points for spectators and support. While the competition is based on solo riders completing the entire course these riders can form 4-man teams and enjoy a day out with mates on a saddle (of course)! The team results will be based on the 4th rider crossing the line thereby encouraging teamwork and camaraderie. The shorter route option of the 50Miler (80km), starts at the halfway mark at Riebeeck Kasteel and ends with the 100Miler riders at Swartland Winery. This event also provides an opportunity for keen riders to taste endurance riding along with twist and turns against the clock. This route has been developed with the co-operation of local farmers and landowners who gave permission for the organisers and cyclists to have access to their properties. This type of support forms the foundation of Amarider which endeavours to bring new routes to riders and new riders to existing routes. DATE: Saturday, 24 May 2013 TIME: 07h30 DISTANCE: 160km with an 80km shorter option Pre-entries opened the 17th February and close on Monday, 19th May 2014. No late entries will be accepted. According to Meurant Botha, director of Amarider, the 100 Miler was created to become a primary fundraiser for the organisation. Amarider is a recreational trails advocacy group focused on improving trail opportunities on the African continent and proceeds of the event are channeled directly to trail projects. Amarider is focused on improving trail construction standards around the country and assist various mountain bike clubs to ensure that their trails are safe and environmentally sustainable. Finishing the Amarider 100 Miler within the allotted 10hours 30minutes cut-off time is one of the most challenging endurance tests!
