The purpose of these shims are to space your cleats in such a way that when you engage your shoes...the studs on your shoes gets in contact with the platform of the pedals. This will result in a better energy transfer, and that your feet are more stable when engaged . When the spacing is wrong...you won't be able to engage...or there will be a rocking sensation/movement side to side on the pedals, that can result on a early/premature disengagement. (and you won't have the benefit for the more stable platform.) You will now also be able to customize the setup as the soles of your shoes wear down.
