  1. Good Day

I have this idea to host a FUN race day for balance bikes. It will be hosted in the town I live in and if it grows then who knows.

My question is if there is any rules follow or union I need to contact or something to do this or can I just host my own event?

Here is an example, my race will be much smaller at first.

  2. Again thank all for their contributions to this topic.

So far my mind is at Garmin or Lezyne and the smaller units are well worth it.

Then there are people saying use your phone, the problem with that it is big and the readings like gps is not always that good. I personally am using my phone atm and want to change that.

The other option I have seen is to get a watch like the forerunner, this way it is multi purpose. The only thing is that you will not have a screen to have a peak at.

    For me Lezyne by far.

Lezyne can go portrait or landscape depends on you

    but below might help

My two picks here are the Lezyne Mega-XL & Garmin Edge 130 Plus

There were almost no new launches in this category this past year, only removals. Previously I included the Stages Dash L10 in here, but that’s been discontinued, leaving previously just Lezyne. But the Edge 130 series prices have crept down while Lezyne’s have mostly stayed the same (fair enough).

We’ve got the Lezyne Mega-XL at $199.  Lezyne has like 38 different models between $100 and $200, I tried to explain it all here a few years ago, and then they added more. They’ve all got minor nuances.  These units can do basic mapping, and pull in routes from sources like Komoot, as well as legit turn by turn navigation in terms of things like saying ‘Left on Maple Street’. The Lezyne units support both ANT+ & Bluetooth Smart. And as I write this, the Lezyne Mega-XL Yellow Submarine Edition is 35% off at $129.

Meanwhile, the Edge 130 Plus sits at $199 normally, but is $149 right now. Most notably, it’s tiny. A fraction the size of the Lezyne. Of course, it doesn’t have the full mapping like the Lezyne, but does have breadcrumb routing and Strava Live Segments. It also has Garmin’s ClimbPro in it, which shows the details about the current climb you’re on. The Edge 130 Plus also has mountain bike metrics (such as grit/flow/jumps), as well as LiveTrack showing your planned course/route. Probably the biggest difference aside from mapping between this unit and the Lezyne is the app/ecosystem polish, where Garmin is a fair bit ahead of Lezyne. But figuring out which feature is most valuable to you is key.

Finally, it’s worthwhile noting that the Sigma ROX 2.0 & ROX 4.0 at least deserve an honorable mention in here, at $90 and under (and a bit less in Europe), they include turn by turn routing from Komoot, as well as ANT+ & Bluetooth Smart sensor integration for the 4.0 edition. Seriously, it’s pretty impressive. I just haven’t spent as much time as I’d love to with them to root out any

    Thank you

I rode with a phone in my pocket doing the recording for years. Before Strava was even a thing.

But I like having a visual indication of whats going on, and there is no way I'm strapping a cellphone to my bars.

I have done the same until last week when it picked up some water damage and I had to replace the screen. Also this samsung a32 gps is up to ****. It jumped around so much on a walk the other day that the walked showed 3 times further then it was.

I bought a second hand Garmin 520 a number of years ago. Worked well, eventually the battery got old, and Garmin replaced it with a new 520+ unit for a few R100's.

Had that for about 4 years and I smashed it by mistake when closing my boot lid. They replaced that for about R1000 with a Garmin 530.

Great device, and their replacement program means that as long as you have the remains of the old one you should have it for life.

Wow that probably makes it worth paying a bit more for a Garmin.

  6. Guys thanks for all the comments. So it comes down to this, if I want quality and good support I go Garmin or maybe Wahoo.

Thing is my budget can be between 2k to 5k if I can justify the 5k purchase.

I am by no means a pro mtb rider and still trying to find my way up the fitness ladder.

With that said even this Magene with all the sensors should be fine? Reviews on youtube seems ok.

So buy Garmin and add sensors later or just go cheap and have a range of sensors?🤔

I'm in the same boat (buying my first GPS cycling computer), but leaning towards garmin.

Mainly because I had excellent after sales experience with them before. My forerunner GPS watch was unable to pick up GPS signal any longer, this was just after the warranty expired. I still sent it to them to have a look at - they just sent me a brand new watch, free of charge. Only paid courier fees.

    They certainly won my loyalty.

    Nice

I get that garmin has been around for many years and has been top 🐕 and probably still is.

I like to give other brands a chance to see what they bring to the table, thing is I have never owned garmin device or a gps computer so I can not compare.

All I know is that I can't keep using my phone for tracking as mistakes happen and paying for screen replacements gets expensive.

  8. Thanks everyone for your opinions.

I guess any one of them should be fine as it will be my first gps.

Seem like Toyota vs Ford or Glock vs CZ.

On the classifieds there are a few Garmin 130 plus for sale at about R3k to R3.5k then there is a Sigma Rox 11 for R1700 so I guess if the garmin is not that much better then the sigma could be a good starting point.

  9. So I am looking for a gps computer and dont want t break the bank.

I have been looking at the following

    Sigma rox 11

    Garmin 130 plus

    Lezyene Mega C

There is a bit of a price difference but this is part of the question, would paying more for the garmin be worth it.

I am an average biker who just wants to see my trips, progress and share on strava.

    Thanks
