  1. Have a look at the Bicycle rolling resistance website and FlexFit By John on Instagram. They have some great data on the rolling resistance of MTB/Gravel tires and then make a call based on the terrain you will be cycling on. If you are doing rough gravel, some of the MTB tires might actually be faster.
  2. Haven't been to Groenkloof but have cycled at Klapperkop a couple of times, loads of runners and cyclists on the road there.
  3. Get a gravel bike that can fit at least 50mm or 2inch MTB tyres and make sure you are running the correct tyre pressure. Most of our roads are quite rough and the extra rubber helps to absorb the bumps and roll a bit smoother. I'm running 48's(and my frame can go up to 2.1inch) It helps me to feel a bit more confident on the bike, you don't have to be so careful when compared to the guys running 40/42mm. I do have some friends who are firm believers in a 45mm max and that works for them but the added comfort, puncture resistance and better rolling resistance works for me. Don't know if this helps but I changed my 44cm aluminium gravel handlebar to a 40cm carbon handlebar and for me the overall handling was a big improvement. I was able to keep up with the MTBs when descending where normally I would fall behind a bit. I'm not the best at descending, even on my MTB. So I will test it a bit more and see whether I will switch back again.

    Gravel tyres

So far the 48 have treated me well, although I have limited mileage on them. I opted for the more volume for Race to the Sun and they were great. I'll put some more km's on them and let you know about the puncture protection. I've got Schwalbe Racing Rays on my MTB and they seem to be quite prone to punctures.

    Gravel tyres

I've got these in 48 and they are great so far(300km odd)
  6. I'm considering this bike. Currently have a carbon hard tail so this will be great for some of the gravel races. Good tyre clearance for some of the rougher roads here in the North. I am not sold on the groupset but the price of the bike is attractive to justify upgrading the group set. Does anyone have an opinion on this bike?
