  4. Hey, Thanks for the contacts guys. Will hopefully join you guys soon. My car decided to die on me, no brakes, so could not make th ride today. Will hopefully see you guys next week on the mountain. I ride a Raleigh RDH 7. It is an azonic eliminator 2 frame. Got it from a guy up in Pretoria. 8. Hey guys For those who don't have time to reed everything else I am going to say I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the stopping power of shimano Deor disk breaks vs the heyes 9 breaks. I have just bought a down hill bike off this forum. Anyway it has a hayes 9 front break and a shimano deore rear break. The problem is that I have always ridden bicycles with the front break on the right, to me this makes sense as I have much more control with my right hand and this is the way my motorbike is set up. I want to swap the breaks around. The heys 9 break leaver is symetrical so it can easily be swopped to the correct side. Unfortunately the Shimano Deor break has the resivor sticking out the top and, not to surprisingly, does not work properly when it is flipped over. As far as I can see I have two options. 1)I could use the heys 9 break as the the back break. This would require me buying more hydraulic housing and bleeding the breaks. I would then shorten the Shimano Deore hydraulic housing and fit the shimano break in front. 2)The other option I could think of would be to buy a new left handed Shimano Deore, or equivalent, leaver, fit it and bleed the whole system. I am assuming this would work out quite a bit more expensive though but would keep the hayes 9 break in front. As mentioned previousely I was wondering if anyone could comment on the stopping power of these two breaks? Is it worth the extra hassle to keep the Hayes 9 in front? Also if you want to swap/sell a left handed break leaver for a right handed shimano deore, 2006, leaver contact me. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. Tanks guys, the advice will be appreciated.
  9. Hi Thanks for the advice. There is a lot of stuff mentioned on the sight so I thought I would summarize hear quickly. In terms of additional costs you pay Add 14% VAT Add R25 delivery charge if you want it to your doorstep Customs add: bike parts - duty free complete bikes - 15% clothing - 40% shoes - 30% helmets - 30% Vat calculated as follows: (Price + 10% + duty) x 14% ---> so if it costs R100 and is duty free you pay R15.40 in VAT Generally the service is very reliable and ppl dont have any problems. Veloce said "I have had endless problems with CRC!!! Every single time I place an order, 7 days later the stuff arrives and the missus goes nuts. Every flippen time!! Bad, bad place that Chain Reaction Cycles...." One user requested crc markes his box as cycling spares even though it included some shoes and he was not charged import for them. As all I wanted to import was clothing I will not be doing so as the 40% import on cloths makes it unfeasible but next time I need parts I will use them.
  10. I have been looking around for a number of things for my bike. I looked locally and found that it is much cheaper to get the stuff from chain reaction cycles in the Uk. Even after shipping is added and up to about 20% import duties. I was wondering if anyone knows what the import duties are for cycling equipment, clothing and protective gear like knee and elbow pads. Thanks From Melch Melch2010-01-16 03:33:15
  11. Hey guys. Thanks for the advice. I will look into it more. And Trapper Opc is the name of the first person to reply to this thread who used two stroke oil.
  12. Hey guys. I need to bleed my disk breaks. I have Magura Julie breaks on my bike. I am facing two problems, getting hold of mineral break fluid and sourcing an additional bleeding nipple that needs to be inserted into the break caliper during bleeding. I am based in the western cape and I have shopped around for mineral break fluid. The best I can find is R160 for 50ml of the shimano mineral oil. I think this is ridiculousness as I can import one 250ml bottle of magura oil from from chain reaction cycles in the Uk for under R300. I will probably end up doing this. I have looked at a bunch of bleed kits and it seems you are buying a bunch or syringes and a bit of piping which I can easily get hold of. The one think I need that I cant get hold of is the aditional bleeding nipple I need to screw into the caliper, this attaches to a pipe and then the syringe containing break fluid. Does anyone know if the nipples attached to the end of the break hosing are specific to the different disk break manufacturers or if they are standard. If anyone can help that would be great. 13. Hi I bought a cannondale f700 second hand a few months ago. I now want to service the head shock. I was just wondering where to get all the necessary stuff, seals oil, bearings etc. Most bike shops don't seem to stock them. I have a friend who has serviced his head shock a number of times who will help me with the actual servicing. Melch2008-08-18 03:25:13

  15. I am thinking of getting a 2nd hand mountain bike and was wondering if anyone has any comments about the reliability of second hand aluminium frames. What to check for and what to avoid. The frame I was thinking of getting was the Trek 8000 ZR top light MTB frame. Any advice would be appreciated
