A very nice and interesting collection of old slip joints. I see a few very nice "keepers" in there. If you can I would like to see pictures of the knives laid out side by side with open blades. Old slip joint knives (non-locking) are very beautiful in my eyes. Thanks for posting.

I have been carrying a pocket knife of one sort or another since I was 8 or 9 years old. I do not think that I would survive if I did not have my pocket knife with me, it becomes an indispensable part of your daily paraphenalia. You will find that you use your pocket knife for all sorts of daily cutting tasks once you carry one on a regular basis, in the begining you will virtually have to force yourself to reach for the knife, but it becomes second nature after a while. In your case I would suggest that you start by carrying a small light pocket knife to start off with, get one with blade about 60 to 65 millimetres (about 2.5 inches) long, a smaller one is not practical. A reasonably priced solution would be one of the smaller Victorinox Swiss Army knives, get one with as few "gadgets" as possible, you should be able to get one for less than R200-00, the blades on the Swiss Army Knives are actually quite good. If you want to spend quite a bit more money,(in like much more money ) try to find one of the smaller Spyderco models e.g. a Spyderco Delica. There is however a huge choice of pocket knives out there, you should be able to find something. Do not make the mistake of buying a large heavy knife, you will not carry it. Try carrying a pocket knife on a regular basis, you will like it. Hope this helps. :thumbup:

In my opinion there is no single best choice for your requirements. Just about any knife can be sharpened up nicely, and will perform normal cutting tasks well. Remember that a hard brittle knife is difficult to sharpen, and does not always cut any better than others, it will require sharpening at some time, regardless of advertising claims. Avoid the cheap Chinese and Far Eastern "stainless" and "surgical" steels, they do not work. Sharpening should be seen as a normal part of knife usage, it is unavoidable. I have often watched large animals being skinned and dressed out, the skinners often only using the humble Okapi slipjoint, they are quick and efficient at the task. Avoid serrated blades for normal cutting tasks. The choice of any knife is a very personal thing, no one else but you can choose a knife. Spending "big bucks" is often not necessary at all. Hope this helps.

I think that we can all say farewell and goodbye to the Bellville Velodrome. There is an article in "The Tyger Burger" 0f 12 September 2012 discussing this subject. Reading between the lines, I do not have much confidence that the Cape Town City Council will be able, or really want to, save the venue. I suppose that money and the big developers will rule again.

Unfortunately this type of action has become the norm in South Africa. Very little we can do to stop this. Sub-third world country we most certainly are.

Ummmm..........Sean dont get upset so quickly. I don't, and have never supported the A.N.C. (please refrain from drawing conclusions from no data). Perhaps I need to explain.......... The D.A. also have "boxes" (as you so euphemistically put it), in its ranks, and proposing laws that cannot, or will not be properly enforced, is exactly one of the specialities of the A.N.C.. Pull yourself together man, you are losing it. edit spelling.

Ah yes......the old god of money raises its head again. Could there also not be corruption in how the tender for the "development" of this area was awarded ?. Somebody benefits from all these high density "developments" .......who are they ?, the citizens that live in the area ? ,.........I think not. Lets face it.............what we as subjects (sorry citizens) think does not matter at all, the faceless "municipality" will do as it pleases, (has anyone ever managed to actually make contact with any of the decision makers in an actual municipality) ?. South African people just do not have any pride in themselves or their country, or their countries history, in other words we have no culture or sense of preserving anything at all. (most do not think about these things anyway). As I have said on many occasions, the Democratic Alliance, who runs the Cape Municipality is as uncultured as the A.N.C., and as short sighted and useless. Obviously big brother knows best. Rant over.

Hello All, Plastic bicycles just do not do it for me. Quality steel framed bicycles do not appear to be available in South Africa any more. What quality factory made steel frames are readily available in South Africa right now ?. Are there still any good bicycle frame makers left in South Africa ?, the name of "Gotty" Hansen springs to mind, (but then THAT was a long time ago) B) . In my view good steel frames are superior to the overpriced aluminium and plastic (sorry, carbon ) frames that are available today. Aluminium frames are a good second choice however. My choice of frame materials (in order) are:- Titanium Steel Aluminium Who else feels as I do ?. :D

This is a can of worms, don't open it. :o
