Ahoy, I've had a Silverback Alpine for a while now and have customised it - part by part over the last four months. What do you guys think of this? Considering I payed R1500 for the bike (new)... ahoy, just bought a new rockshox dart 3 (new) for R1600? in packaging and all. how do you guys rate this fork (taking into consideration it's a cross country remote lockout works so well!

i know holy roller didnt take offence - i guess we just need to continue bringing it up cause ppl seem to forget it - as u said, soimetimes cyclists are their OWN worst enemy

didnt wanna bring up an old smelly topic but saw it yesterday on the way home from wrk - two cyclists nearly got klapped by a taxi cause of this

i need to switch sides and rant abuot something quickly... as a cyclist, i do my best to stick to the side of the road and as far away from motorists as possible - however, i've seen far too many ppl steer into the road, almost IN FRONT of cars... i see it all the time and in my opinion, motorists have every right to throw their toys about this. im not defending drivers here but obviously if youre going to ride in the middle of the road like ive seen LOTS of cyclists do, then expect passing cars to give you the finger because it can be really frustrating. ive seen guys nearly get knocked off their bikes because of this - fair enough, drivers need to be careful, but if i see a cyclist riding along the side of the road ill expect him to stay there unless he HAS to move in front of me for whatever reason, in which case ill be able to forsee this anyway and slow down etc.

local bike shop - bridge cycles in diep river, cape town... got my silverback there, and my full body condom a.k.a cycling clothes, and all my stuff...

allow me to share a story with you guys: i used to play in a band, guitar that is. my first guitar was a cheap piece of crap and i hated it - but i learned how to play guitar with it... then, a few years yater (ok one year) i saved up enough GELD to buy a les paul custom - that's a really good guitar. immediately i felt and appreciated the difference and suddenly became a more confident, more skilled guitarist. if i had started on that guitar i would never have gained the skills i did from my first one... because although the more expensive one made it easier to play - i had the experience from the cheaper one? err... make sense? lol... nevermind. sonded much better in my head LOL!

not bad - gt's are sturdy, strong bikes - the cable d. brakes don't really perform much better than v-brakes and are more expensive to maintain (especially when something goes wrong) - and the sus fork... suntour? good bike, entry level though.

just dont get something thats gonna break and cost u more money. ure only setting yourself up for dissapointment. lord knows how expensive components are as stand-alone purchases... i really liked the specialized hardtail in the bicycling mag though... there'sn awesome ride for that price...

the thing is, there's a reason why fox shocks start at 5g's, there's also a reason why suntour shocks are soft - they're designed for fidderent kinds of riding. my suntour xcm with lockout works VERY well on the road because it's soft and sucks in all the small bumps - but i cant take it to tokai and jump off 2 metre ramps - it WILL break my fork.

and yes, suntour sus is crap lol... end of story. the xcm however has decent lockout system for the price though.

also, the bike that i bought cost me R1500 (new), and those el-cheapo suntour cranks etc. do NOT last, as well as the BB's etc. ive spent over R1500 on components and now have a SB Alpine with Alivio (don't laugh) all round - and a deore FD. jsut need to get decent front sus as well - basically anything other than rockshox or fox (the entry level fox fork costs over R5000 lol) is not reallllly going to give you the freedom of taking your ride anywhere.

the most important q is: what kind of riding are you going to do now, and are hoping to do in the next, say, year or so? if you're going to cruise along jeep tracks and tackle the occasional ST then a hardtail is probably the best option - if you plan on doing more technical riding i'd suggest a dual sus because take it from me - you don't have allot of cash, so you get a hardtail only to be dissapointed when your rear rim bends more than... nevermind. ya you get the idea.

or save up an extra 2 and a half grand and u can get yourself a dual sus mongoose, i think it's the otero???

hmmm... for 4 grand you're looking at a fairly entry-level-ish front suspension. there was a good article in last months' or two months ago's bicycling mag about some awesome value-for-money fs bikes... find a friend who got that issue and check it out...

at the end of the day, anyone who attempts to challenge gareth(especially on the air) will probably be faced with the general cockyness and attitude many people wanna hit him over. that's the sad truith guys...
