  1. We are mtb'ers not f#$# politicians ! I am sure if you ask for whatever you eat they wil try and get it for you !

You should be ashamed of yourself! He asked a civil question and you reacted like that.

People like you should rather just piss off, the majority of us don't need of appreciate the likes of you!

  2. Yeah sure there a many things i would also love to do but cant afford, However there is a difference between just being plainly ripped off. DCM is about half the price of the epic, and Sani is about half the price of the DCM. All similar type races, All remotely located, etc etc etc. What justifies one race being 3 times more expensive than the other.

And the answer there is simple marketing, since the marketing dept has created it into a "prestigious" event you may now rip people of at will and the super rich will come and do it, becuase they love prestige. And the organizer love the money in their wallet. Its got nothing to do with futhering cycling as a whole, its got to do with furthering the image of events like the epic, so that the organizers may continue to charge people whatever they feel happy with.i.e. common joe unless sponsored can forget about doing it. And that to me is wrong.

What i like about the other organizers is that they have "funride" or "none-competative" events on the same routes but at cheaper prices so you can at least experiance something similar without going bankrupt.

People do however have an inherent ability to figure out whether they are being ripped off, including the so-called Superrich. People will just vote with their feet if they are not seeing the value. And it will all just come to nought in the end...

  3. Even for big races most people I know book themselves into a different environment which also costs money, I for example like to go to harkerville, or book out the house on eselfontein for a couple of days to just get solid miles in. The advantage of doing races before the time is simple, you ride so much harder during a race than you normally would while out training your usual routes. Hence it has more of an effect and you have a accurate measure of fitness close to the big events.

Yeah most poeple with moderate incomes can afford to spend 30-50k to do a epic, and up to 20k to do a DCM. Fact is if you want to now take part in the really big high profile stage races you need a corporate sponsor. Or save up a couple of years, maybe take a second mortage on your house.

But is that not the same for life in general. There are many things that I would love to do, but I can't afford it....that's just life. Either consider whether it is worth sacrificing a couple of years of your life to work you arse off, or move on and get over the fact that you can't afford everything...

  4. That, in my opinion, is exactly the problem! Corporates start paying for teams to enter and then the poor man on the street is left unable to afford to enter and give these things a go. Like you say, for them it is peanuts and probably written off as marketing.

That might be the case, but also, how many new people has this not attracted to the sport? And the knock-on effects of this?

The vast majority of races/events appear affordable to someone with a moderate income.

  5. Just entered the Tuli, and that costs R18 000, however have chatted to guys that have done it before, and they were even willing to pay even more for that.

Its all relative and the price is determined by supply and demand. There are enough people to pay that much for it.

If the race/tour is to expensive for you, then don't do it and move on....

  6. i resently had a pic of a bulldog 100years ago and they looked nowhere near where they are today, actually sad how badly they were bred and what they turned out into

They had more of a staffie look those days-anyway im not gonna chat too much one here . lets rather get some more pics

    Hey Tunariaan,

The closest relative to the original english bulldog is the American Bulldog of today. Google them. They are phenominal dogs. I own two of them.

The original english bulldog was imported into America in the 1800's, and they continued breeding them in the deep south.

Pound for pound nothing can match these guys. 40kg dogs that can leap 10 feet in the air from standing still and once they bite onto something they hold on for ever.

I attach a pic of them:

  7. And in terms of bike stores, what would you guys recommend? I live near Sandton.

I would like to go to a bike store where the guys aren't going to try and flog me something purely because they have the dealership. I am looking for somewhere where they guys will recommend me the best possible without trying to rip me off.

  8. Your colleague talks nonsense. You can get a good quality DS bike at that price - or near to it. What sort of riding are you planning on doing after the Tuli?

Tumbleweed: I plan to pretty much the same kind of rideing after the Tuli, maybe ride every second weekend....

My boss that has done the Epic twice says that he did all his practising on a hardtail and did the race using a softtail and that for the price differential he wouldn't recommend a softail for a newbie.

So, as you can see I am a bit confused right now...

  9. Well, they asked if I would like to enter. Seeing that they paying the entry fee I didn't think it to unfair.

Scotty: A "know it all" colleague of mine has suggested that in terms of dual suspension, he doesn't even consider dual suspension at that price range due to quality concerns. He says at that price that the bike is more likely to break than anything else...

  10. Hi Guys,

I am a total newbie to mountain biking and have been entered by my work to partake in this years Tour de Tuli.

I need to start practicing soon and would like some advise on what to buy.

Lets start with the bike. My budget is R20 000. What would you guys recommend.
