  1. So the new challenge... Got a new Reba sl 120mm shock... Now need to find a 28 hole, 15mm boost front hub... Anyone have one laying around?
  2. So this project has been shelved for a while... Dropped off the frame yesterday to be resprayed... So one of the last items on the list was the shock... I have an old shock that I could fit, but honestly it is at the end of its life... So looking for options for new/secondhand shocks. Now I know the Tallboy was actually designed for 120mm travel upfront, I think... And I've always been a fan of the leftys... Will a 100mm lefty work on this frame? Or am I better off fitting a 120mm reba other... I see there's a nice Reba in the classifieds, new 120mm travel, only downside is it has got a thru axle, so will need to see if I can get spacers for the front hub that I currently have... I doubt it, so will then need to look at a new hub, which would have been the case with the lefty in anyway... Any opinions or advice welcome...
  3. So I checked out CBR last week... Wanted to get vinyls cut to use as stencils for the frame respray... So basically they're not willing to help out with that as they say that's what they sell... well then so much for that... A respray with them will cost R4600... so not gonna happen for this build... The name on the frame has actually got very little to no paint damage, just one spot, so I might just mask that off and respray the rest and cover the whole frame with a matt clear coat... will see. got some more parts over the weekend... Stylo crank from BIL, xt shifters and derailleur from an old varsity friend and the tyres from cwc. Got the bar off the classifieds, was actually hoping the carbon bar would work but missed the diameters, so for now it will be the straight alu bar... Basically about there with parts... Didn't want to break up the other bike for one or two parts only, so looking at some brakes now... There was a formula sx set in the classifieds, which I'm not sure if it's available anymore, and a magura MT2 set which I'm actually after, just waiting on confirmation whether the deal is going ahead on the maguras... My magura julie brakes that I'm running on the cannondale has been the best brakes by far that I've had, that's why I still run them, so looking forward to try out the MT2's on the santa... To save the other bike I'll just throw a new chain and cassette on that I still have in my spares box.
  4. I have no issue using a mtb Gatorskin.... used to pump my gator skins at least 10bar that I had on my road wheels... Will look at the alternatives as well....
  5. Got the wheels today. Looks like decent wheels, will do for now. Might leave the other one I have on the rear. But I kind off like a matched wheelset.
  6. Will check out the suggested tyres. I found the crossmarks to have a nice low rolling resistance and good millage when doing some tar inbetween...
  7. So tyre choice... I've always like and used the maxxis tyres... Used to ride larsen TTs and then stuck with the crossmarks... Just saw these for a not too bad price... Any better suggestions? Otherwise I'll just grab two of these. https://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/maxxis-crossmark-ii-tr-exo-tyre-29x225
  8. Thanks I'll give CBR a shout. Checked out their webpage and their work looks great, just scared of the price tag... maybe it won't be that bad. I'll definitely take the slx shifter off your hands, will be happy to buy it from you aswell... If I can't find the 9 speed matching one then I'll just take the slx one off my bike and use that. I have a new 9 speed xtr shifter lying around, so can use that on my bike then...
  9. I can probably give it a try, was just thinking with postage it might be a problem to get it in time to finish up the frame, not sure if normal international postage will work well in this time... I'm also trying to get an image file to see if I can get the vinyl cut locally...
  10. So the next project has started, and this time it's bike related for the first time in MANY years. Making plans to get back on the bike after too many years off it... But this build is actually for my wife and not for me. Currently she has a very dated scott scale 40, while dated still a nice bike. With a bit of luck and a family member upgrading to a newer frame I got hold of a 2012 carbon tallboy frame with the rear shock included. Cost me some money but totally still worth it. Frame will need a paint job as it has a lot of chips in the paint... The plan for the build is to do it on a budget for now and then upgrade over time. So I'll be grabbing some drivetrain parts off of the scott to use for now. Part I have already: - Tall boy frame - rear shock - rear wheel, another set picked up from a fellow bikehub member arriving next week - Rockshox reba front shock, quite a bit of stanchion wear but it works fine for now, would like to fit a black lefty in time... - complete headset - complete BB - front derailer - setback seatpost - stem - slx brakes - easton bar hopefully ariving next week from a fellow bikehubber... - cable set Parts to be taken from the scott: - Crank - rear derailleur - cassette - chain - saddle Part still needed: - slx or xt 3x9 shifters (not sure if I'm going to find a set of these) - 180mm rotors - grips - tyres The thinking about the 9 speed drivetrain, I know it's already outdated, is simply to limit the initial cost of the build by taking it off the scott and since I have a few new 9 speed chains and cassettes, I could just as well use them first. First up will need to be the frame. So will start taking the frame apart at some stage and prep it to get painted. My neighbor loves spraypainting so that part is covered. From thos who have done this before, what type of paint works well for the bike frames, just normal 2k? And then decals or stickers, I would like to keep the bike's original look but don't know where to get stickers or stencils made or whatever to get the name back on in the original size and font... Any ideas? Will post a few pics for those interested during the process... Due date for this to be completed is 22 Aug, as I want to hand it over on the 23rd as a birthday present... More than enough time to look for those 9 speed shifters... and get the frame done...
  11. I've been riding a 2003 Bad Boy Ultra for 11 years now... greatest bike ever and I love the black with discreet gray graphics... Back then they had the cross country hardtail frames with a 80mm headshok and road wheels... Obviously got a mtb wheelset to get a nice light xc bike... Would love that design headshok with 80mm travel!! Even though it's old the weight off the frame is still very competitive with any other alu xc frame...
  12. Did my first night ride some time back in '09. Looking for a bike light was a challenge because the new technology leds were not yet available in commercial lights and the ones that were available simply too expensive. Decided to build my own and after sourcing cree leds, lenses and driver from Australia started with the process. Testing my first light in Jonkershoek ( a 750 lumen cree light with 8deg lenses) at 11pm at night I only saw at the bottom that I reached a max speed of 76km/h. Tried the next day to do it in the light and chickened out at about 68km/h. I came to the conclusion that you're able to focus a lot more in the night. The light was plenty up to 60+ meters ahead but due to not being able to see the things next to you, you can focus on the road ahead and also I don't think you then get the same feeling of speed as you can't see the trees passing you at a rather fast rate. I then went ahead and build about 10 more of the lights for family and friends to give them some top performing bike lights for the time. Later upgraded to lithium packs for better energy to weight and easier charging etc... Was off the bike for quite some time now and just assembled a light last night from old spares to hopefully go and ride and Bloemendal tonight. Now just need the details... So anyone doing the night ride tonight at Bloemendal?? cheers
  13. Would like to know the same!!
  14. Have to agree on this one!! Cwc can be cheaper these days, on my way to get some joe's slime from them, also cheaper than crc. Support local if they can compete. But as you said, crc sure is nice sometimes because they have a huge variety and very often you need some stuff that you can only get from them down to the most odd little parts for almost anything...
