  1. Will insurance pay out for a bad battery? If they do, that certainly sounds like a winning strategy. 😅 The more I Google the less alternatives I see. Coros also don't replace batteries.
  2. Sorry, I was a bit unclear - the R2k is to replace my Edge 520. The only problem with it is the torn button. To replace the watch was more than R6k, iirc. I'm considering replacing the battery. Just can't find one locally available, so it will have to be Aliexpress or Ebay. Oof, 5 Suunto's in 3 years - that makes it very likely that you'll need support soon out of warranty too. The Coros looks super on paper, but I'll have to search around a bit to see how good their out of warranty support is.
  3. Morning all, My GF's Fenix 6S's battery has died, so we took it in to Garmin. They don't replace batteries at all, but takes in your old watch, and offer you a bit of discount on a new one. I have the same problem with my Edge 520 - one of the rubber buttons has torn, and the only "fix" (trading in on a new one) Garmin has will cost me more than R2k. We've tried all the fixes for the 6S - hard reset, deleted temp files (thanks, NavWorld, who didn't even charge us to assist!), upgraded firmware... Has anyone looked at alternatives to Garmin that offers a bit more after-sales support? Basic requirements for watch: Must have >24 hour battery life on GPS (she does ultras) Must have a barometric altimeter Must be able to sync with Trainingpeaks Must be able to sync routes and do navigation. Must support Ant+ The Fenix 6S was perfect in functionality, but Garmin's after-sales policy is a bit of a put-off. Thanks!
  4. The general feedback from Facebook was pretty positive. People seems to be happy to cycle Koppie’s MTB trails alone in the week.
  5. Hi all, Does anyone have an idea of how safe Klapperkop's MTB trails currently are? Per this topic it seems like a lot of effort was put into making it safer, and while sticking to the tar we've seen quite a few people cycling/running solo there, but I'm specifically interested in the XC route.
  6. Morning all!, As per the topic - does anyone know if Groenkloof is open yet for cycling/hiking? And their braai facilities?
  7. Quick feedback on my and a friend's recent claims experiences. We were camping at Silver Rocks caravan park near to Nylstroom. At the last night (Sunday night) both our bicycles were stolen from inside a tent - a group moved through the camp terrain cutting several tents, stealing whatever they could. Both bicycles were Scott Spark 950s - mine a 2012 and I think his was a 2014. We both logged our claims on Tuesday, me with Auto&General and him with Outsurance. My bicycle was insured for about 28k, with an excess of about 1k. I filled in Auto&General's web-based claims form. They phoned me back on Thursday evening (18h30), and couldn't reach me. I phoned them back on Friday morning, and they asked a few more details to finalize the claim. They required me to send them proof of payment for the original purchase in 2012, which I was able to do with some difficulty. On Wednesday (8 days after lodging my claim), they eventually told me that they will pay out the full insured amount into my bank account, netting me about 27k. My monthly premium was roughly R140. My friend who's with Outsurance was insured for about R34k. His monthly was less than R100. Outsurance approved his claim by the Thursday after he lodged it with them (e.g. about three days). They didn't ask for proof of payment. However, they required him to buy from The Bicycle Company. So, replacement purchases: Both of us eventually decided to go for the Spark 950s again. I am busy purchasing from Cycle House - Anton quoted me R31700 for the bicycle with eggbeater pedals and the tubeless conversion. My friend had to buy from TBC. They asked him R39600. IIRC that included the tubeless conversion, but Shimano pedals rather than eggbeaters. So, all in all we paid in fairly much the same, though my premium over the last five years was significantly more.
  8. Thanks for the replies! I was tempted by the Epic, based purely on its looks (I like the sleek styling), but I think I'll skip that, then. Cycle House's team are all down at the Sani2C, so the shop will only be open on Monday again. In the meantime I'll try to testdrive a Camber.
  9. Hi all, I used to ride a 2012 Scott Spark 950, which was stolen the weekend before last. Insurance is now paying out, and I'm looking for a replacement. Thus far the options on the table are as per the subject: Spec Epic FSR Comp - R38k Spec Camber Comp 29 - R34k Scott Spark 950 - ??? I'm not sure about the Spark's price, though I suspect that Anton from Cycle House will be able to offer it at a price fairly close to the Epic FSR's. A friend recently bought a new Spark 950 from The Bicycle Company for about R42k, so that is probably the upper limit for the Spark's price. My general riding is the Pretoria surroundings - Rosemary and the like. The most technical riding I do is probably the Trailseeker's 70s, and there are a couple of places that are beyond my capabilities. I was very happy with my old Spark 950; if it wasn't stolen I would have kept it for a long time to come.
  10. Necro'ing an old thread. I'm not a regular forumite here, but do visit from time to time. Saw some notifications in my inbox about this old thread, and boy, did it bring back memories! For me Hakahana is still the hardest Trailseeker I've ever done. While I like the current Trailseeker trails, I do miss this one. A toast to the Hakahana, I wish I could walk out your cramps again!
  11. Hi all, What camp terrains would you suggest near to PTA with MTB trails? I'm looking for places not much further than about 2 hours away. Current options: Sondela Mountain Sanctuary Thanks!,
  12. +1 I'm going to be one of those who's going to hike sections of the full marathon tomorrow. I had to hike parts of the Lionman as well, simply because some of the descents were beyond my comfort limit. Rest assured, though, that I will give way to those still in their saddles, and to those hiking faster than me. I'm not going to wait until you ask me to move either - whether I'm in the saddle or on my feet I try my best to know when someone is closing up on me. To the highly skilled, but less fit riders - if I catch up with you on the straights, please extend me the same courtesy I did to you on the descent. Most of you do, but for some it is a one-way street.
  13. To those who had to ride extra laps and are still saying: "great race" - kudos to you! It's that kind of spirit that I like most about the MTB community. I started in D, finished the 70 km in 3:24, which I'm happy with. As for injuries and First Aid - have you ever considered carrying a small kit with? Even if you only carry a coule of triangulars, it will help a lot when trying to help someone.
  14. I agree - most of their expenses would be paid by now, and they will simply not have the funds to refund anyone. It will be nice if they add something extra to the goody bag as a conselation gift, but I doubt that they will have that kind of funds left.
