  1. Thanks for the advice MDW. I'll see if I can get hold of Donovan.
  2. Guys, thanks for all the valuable input. I was expecting something like this. My mind also tells me I am embarking on a crazy thing; but for me to quit is a complete no-no. I am following the Atkins diet. High protein; low carbs and no snacking. During training I eat well to ensure that I don't bomb-out. My plan is to really carbo load on the Thursday and Friday before the event. If my body feels completely overexerted during training I might adapt the plan, rest more and cycle less. I think I'll update this post daily for those interested to find out how everything pans out in the end. If I crash and burn or finish in the first six of my team. I consulted a doctor before I started cycling again; so I do not fall completely in the Darwin awards category.
  3. Hi Guys I need help! The DC is 10 days away and I am far from ready as I am now. Saturday I weighed 97. My aim is 88. DC time aim: +-7 hours. I can do a Argus in sub 3 when I am really fit. This year has been a particular bad year for me in respect to injuries and illness. I broke my shoulder about 15 weeks ago in a MTB event. As soon as I was able to use my arm again I caught a monster of a flue which kept me off the bike for another month. I climbed on the bike the first time again on Saturday 12/11. I am also following a strict diet now. I am loosing about 1 kg a day currently. My training plan: Saturday 12/11 105km by myself (I almost died of exhaustion - Was still coughing) Tuesday 15/11 3 hour ride (Very weak in the climbs - Heart rate through the roof) Wed 16/11 3 hour ride Thurs 17/11 3 hour ride Fri 18/11 Rest Satur 19/11 6 hour ride Sun 20/11 Rest Mon 21/11 3 hour ride Tues 22/11 3 hour ride Wed 23/11 3 hour ride Thurs 24/11 - 25/11 Rest Would this schedule help at all, or am I fooling myself and delaying the inevitable result that I would not be ready?? Thanks for your input.
  4. Hi My Spinergy Xaero Lite rear wheel rim got a tear when I went through a pothole. My question are: 1. Are there maybe somebody out there that has a 2nd hand Spinergy rear wheel I can buy. (1st price) 2. I can get a new rim from iCycling but for R1000 more I can get a a newish Ksyrium SL rear wheel. What to do?? 3. Will it look completely stupid to race with a mismatch wheelset? Thanks.
  5. I have always used Willie Engelbrect cycles for my bicycle repairs because of Lourens. Where does he work now?
  6. Cartilage like braincells does not grow back except in some experimental new procedures. Some of these procedures has been noted in the South African media already. I can let you know if you like. The point is; if it is gone, it is mostly gone for good and what you have left need to be guarded like a very fragile treasure. I am not a doctor but have read up volumes on knee cartilage issues, due to the fact that I have destroyed most of my medial knee cartilage, while I was still in the army. Sloet my advice for you is to be careful at the procedure selected to repair the meniscus injury. (Keep as much cartilage as possible) When in rehab, stick to the program religiously. You may feel strong, but the raw state of the knee can easily deteriorate in this stage. Super-mil's advice on supplements sounds wise. Good luck!
  7. For sure! Before you know it, the late nights are a vague memory, soiled nappies not so reprehensible anymore and the little one is nagging for his first bike. Congrats man.
  8. Is the organization of a cycling event so much more expensive than that of a golf tournament or any other major event? Does it not come down to the major sponsors attaching their name to certain events and provide the money then also for the prizes? Take Nedbank for instance sponsoring the Argus partly as well as some golf tournaments. Why would cycling get the inferior sponsorship? So I think it comes down to percentages. What percentage of the country would rather watch a certain sport on the tellie if it was broadcasted at the same time?
  9. I am not a pro cyclist, but I think it is a disgrace what the elite cyclists are earning on prize money in general. What type of income are they getting from the sponsorships? Is that enough to make a decent living and therefore the prize money for events are so crappy? I am really feeling for these guys.
  10. Me too. I did not see many people wearing them, but I think Anriette Really shined with her armband and making our plight known.
  11. Just spoken to Racetec. They say the last mat is a backup mat in case the chip signal was not picked up when you crossed the finish line at high speed . In that case I presume my signal was not picked up going over the finish line. Lesson to learn then... do not slack down until you reach the final mat; as to adjust your time by Racetec would be close to impossible.
  12. I check my time when the gun goes off at the start and when crossing the finish line. Is it not suppose to work like that?
  13. When I crossed the finish line my polar said 3.28:05. My official time is closer to 3.29. Does it mean the final race time was only calculated when you went over the mat at the end? If so, it really sucks, as I slowed down considerably after crossing the finish line and about 20 passed me before I got to the final mat. Can anybody confrim?
  14. I also start in F, so if Rob thinks he can get to Lance, I will just have to stay glued to his wheel.
  15. The thought did cross my mind, but nahhh. I caught him the next day on the road again and he gave me a tube with slime in it, in exchange. I am bargaining for a huge discount I visit their shop again.
