There are two types of spray. One is a direct jet shooting about 5m, even in a strong wind. I have tried this, it works. The other is a spray which I think is pretty useless for a Capetonian, given the wind. I think vigilence is the best protection.

I am really sorry that this happened to you. I also ride alone, BUT never in the dark. I often ride towards Smits but only as it is getting light and if I get past Froggy Pond where the houses end and the bush starts, I turn around if there are no cyclists nearby. Yes these attacks are unlawful and we should be able to ride alone safely, however we cannot. Come on ladies, don't ride alone in the dark!! I know that at 5.45/6am ish it is too dark to be riding near Smits alone.

I am a lady and I have a spez camber and it is AMAZING! On a lower budget, and taking into account the fact that your friend is 1.5m tall, I would say that a Giant Trance 650b would be perfect.
