  1. To be honest, I'm in two minds about the live tracking. It can work for me or against me. I don't know if I want everybody to know exactly where I am at all times. For safety reasons. My friends and family back home will know where I am at all times, and with regular updates people will have a good idea of which area I am in. Those wanting to join me can then rather contact me directly.
  2. Yes, I'll most likely go with lockout front suspension. Tubeless - I think it's all a matter of preference. I've gone tubeless before on one of my previous trips and just prefer to rather go with Schwalbe tyres, triple thick tubes and inner liner. It's what works best for me.
  3. Thank you! Yes, I'll be giving updates regularly...or as regularly as I can manage when in the bundus. Yes, Nokia has sponsored me with an N8. I will be using a powermonkey solar charger to charge all my devices. Though most of my updates will be to my blog: http://jolandie-rust.blogspot.com and to social networking sites: Facebook, Twitter etc. Video, posts, pics etc. I will stream video live when able to do so, but will give notice of this in advance on Facebook and on my blog. Live tracking - I am still considering.
  4. There are always safety concerns with any solo trip, big or small.
  5. Thanks. My bike is a Corratec, Superbow Race with front suspension. Though I am considering rather going with a rigid fork. I'm not going with a rohloff hub. 9 Speed Shimano cassette. Schwalbe marathon plus tyres, 26x2.25 - currently have Schwalbe Smart Sam tyres on. Shrader valve tubes. I will be taking Old Man Mountain front and rear racks. Ortlieb front roller plus and back roller plus panniers. Handlebar bag and trunk bag. I'll put a pick when I've got Luna kitted out. But here's a pic of what my bike looks like. Mine is just plain black. http://i837.photobucket.com/albums/zz291/jolandierust/corratec_superbow_race.jpg
  6. Yep, SHE is still giving it a go. I am leaving on 27 April. On knowing more about bikes...I've had my bike for 4 years now, have gone through South Africa and around South Africa together. (Well around South Africa I was on Luna, my bike from Cpt back home to Jhb). So we know each other pretty well.
  7. Thank you! Yes, unfortunately not going through Botswana, but will definitely visit sometime in the future.
  8. Quick note: change of blog site: http://jolandie-rust.blogspot.com
  9. I would love to be able to have a big launch with as many cyclists as possible! I should look at maybe putting that together. I was introduces to thehub whilst on my trip around SA, so haven't been very active. Any advise on how best to organise such a hub and notifying other hubbers about it would be greatly appreciated! I will go look up some of the blogs and sites I know of, of other 'adventurers' who have done similar rides. Including women. Of course I am aware of all potential dangers. I would love to be able to do the Africa trip on 'the black bike'. She has been dubbed "Luna" and I have an incredible emotional connection with this bike. We've been through alot together. Though will most probably doing it on a different bike altogether. Do have two sets of pannier bags though. Just need front panniers still. And I do know of the guys currently cycling from Cpt to Saudi. Someone sent me the link a while back. It's actually quite amazing just how many people are out there doing similar stuff. Pretty awesome!
  10. Thank you for all the replies!! Okay, who is Riaan Manser? .... LoL. KIDDING!!! Of course I've read his book. People have been calling me crazy for the last three years now, so it's ok I'm used to it. I have been planning this trip since end 2007, so yes alot of planning has gone into it. But then I also believe one should not 'over plan' something like this. Because it won't go according to plan. I will post dates and the route up the west coast of SA closer to the time if anyone would like to join me. I am launching on the morning of 11th Feb 2011 from Cape Town. I will be travelling from CT on the N7 up to the Namibian border. I will be having a fundraiser in October. I am planning on raising just enough money to cover my visa costs and some emergency money. Half of what I raise will go to the Stroke Survivors Foundation. I will post more details on this soon as well. In the meantime, thank you for all your input and messages of support! I really appreciate it!!!!
  11. In 2004, I cycled through Israel. In March 2008 I cycled solo from Johannesburg to Cape Town. On 3 October 2009, I launched to circumnavigate South Africa, solo, thereby being the first woman ever to do so! This trip was in order to raise enough awareness and funds for me to live my dream of becoming the first woman to cycle around the entire African continent. I arrived back in Johannesburg on Sunday 10 January 2010 having covered 5 951 km’s and 100 days on the road in my solo circumnavigation of South Africa. I also met some Hub members whilst on the road who stopped to chat and give me some well needed refreshments! On 11-02-2011 I will launch from Cape Town to make my dream a reality! Whilst I will be flying the ‘Proudly South African’ flag, be it that the Proudly South African campaign endorses this expedition; This is a solo journey: no back-up vehicles, no management team, no administrative office. 12. Wow...this certainly is interesting. Someone told me about this thread. Thought I'd say hi. Jeremy...I still have your light and jacket. I must just remember to return it to you! It's fascinating to see what people can say about you when they don't know you. So people...any questions? Ask me.
