  1. Hi Guys I know that a good weight for a road bike is probably around 8kg but when should you seriously start to think of cutting some off? I'd say for those that enter events and want your average over 30km at least. Just want to make sure that my bike isn't too heavy Thanks
  2. I use the Edge 200 and I would say if you're wanting to get into serious training rather save up for something that has a HR and power meter because that can really make a difference. But I'm very happy with the 200 because it's a good speedometer... logs my routes, distance and accent. It's also very easy to use. Some say you might as well use your phone and use an app like strava but I like the fact that it's separate. I got mine for a give away price that's probably why I bought it but I'm very happy with it.
  3. Hi Guys Just need some advice on upgrading my bike. I've read lots of stories on the one thing that you should upgrade is your wheels. Just a peek at my bike specs - Merida Road Race - Alu frame - Carbon Fork - Shimano Tiagra groupset - Shimano R500 wheels I want to upgrade at the moment... let's say my budget is R8000. This bike cost me less than that... but do I sell and buy a new bike? or get a more decent set of wheels? And which wheels should I go for? I know if I get a good pair of wheels I can always keep them when I upgrade to a carbon frame maybe too. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  4. Sad that Wolff only did 4 laps... she probably didn't get the chance to push at all. Let's hope it will be a clean race... P1 certainly had too many flags!
  5. I hope that red bull and ferrari can challenge for a win from this weekend, would be great to have more than 2 teamates battling at the front. For sure, I still think Hamilton is going win this one by a margin again
  6. I finally took the plunge today, didn't think it would be a bit wet but it was lots of fun anway... Thanks for all the tips guys, had no issues @luccmann, I'm not sure how we can travel or have a ride together if you're starting at the other side? I didn't get time for any practise runs unfortunately... had to rely on the tips I got here and google maps
  7. Thanks Dale'
  8. Ricciardo was racing for Torro Rosso last year... and his been in the Red Bull development program testing for them... so he's clearly no rookie. BUT, I do agree that he's having a awesome year so far. I hope he gets his podium place back.
  9. @Firemeister - I don't think there's a group for this route yet, but we can start one although I'll be changing next month. I've sent you a pm
  10. @Batty Boy Have you tried anything yet? I have a cramp problem too and it always happens around 90km. For the Argus I was hoping the biogen cramp prevent would help but it still happened. I had the electrolyte fizz bottle and another one with carbs. 4 gels and a banana. The cramp happened after taking all that. In my case it's always the same muscles my "upper inner leg muscles" not sure what they're called but from the groin down to the knee. Maybe I'll do some strength training on those muscles too? Also my salt intake is probably a concern too. Another thing is that my longest ride was the Argus ... but I'm only riding for almost a year now (mostly commuting 60km x 3 times a week) Thanks for all the input guys, I will test every possible thing and hopefully that will be the end of my cramps!!
  11. I will let you know how it goes @lucmccann Please pm me that route @usxorf I'm only starting in May but would like to have the route asap and maybe do a few practice runs!
  12. Hi Guys I'm busy trying to work out a route from the Northern Suburbs to Observatory side. https://goo.gl/maps/Y6zeP My only worry is having to drive a section of Vanguard Drive. I'm also using a road bike. Any suggestions and do you think this route will be okay? I wouldn't mind driving through Tikkiedraai or Edgemead section to Paarden Eiland but then I wouldn't know how to cross the N1. Thanks
  13. Hi Hairy Yes, it's always windy in Cape Town... I drive hills... to make it simple... Tiekie Draai is on my way to work there's a gym before that and a gym after the hill. It's not bad on my way to work as it's more downhill and less wind of course but to do a windy tiekie draai hill and then go to gym is a bit of a mission... which would be the one closer to home. Do you think I can go to gym and then take a slow ride to work from there? Thanks
  14. Hey guys! Thanks so much for the replies... much appreciated!!! It does make more sense of having the gym closer to you always, I agree that option should work the best! Thanks again!!
  15. I normally commute to work 3 times a week 30km one way. Soon I will be going to gym as well and want to go on my way to work. There are 2 options, one gym is 10km from my home and the other is 10km before work. Would it be better to go to the one closer to work or closer to home? Initially I thought the one closer to work because it will be an easy ride with not much of hills after a hard work out. But won't I be burning too much of energy before gym? Would you advise I go on a different days and not commute on my gym days? Or can this be possible? and which one would be the better gym to go to? Thanks!
  16. Hi Guys I would like to know when I need more than just water when I cycle? For a normal commute to work I do 30km, One water bottle seems to be fine, but sometimes I do go the extra mile around 45km. Are those rides fine with just water? or will I need GU or add Electrolytes to my water? I normally commute early in the morning without eating too so I'm thinking that I might need something especially for the 45km ride. For my longer rides (80km) some weekends I do prepare well though. Any tips on this? Thanks!
  17. here's some more pictures Interesting that your old bike was found NixM!
  18. Wow guys thanks for the quick replies, all components seem to be Shimano Tiagra. I did have a sneaky suspicion that it's a bit old and entry level. Thanks again!! much appreciated guys!
  19. Hi hubbers could you please help me check which model this is? or a rough idea what you will pay for it? It is in good nick but seems to be an oldish model. The guy wants R5500, but I'm not sure whether that's reasonable? Thanks Eustace
  20. Hey there... Has anyone ever taken the Vissershok route? I don't think there's a nice shoulder there but if you travel early enough there might not be much traffic? I have been riding through Tiekie Draai (Tyger Valley Road) and did Contermanskloof a few times too and that seems to be perfect. But would like to have more routes to explore Thanks!
  21. Hey guys Since there are a few of us that commutes this route, and if we want to join up I suggest we create a meeting spot with time and dates we are cycling? I commute every Monday, Tuesday and Friday and leave around 5:30am, but can be flexible. I'm close to Cape Gate side and guessing the furthest away? so you guys can come up with meeting spots? Thanks
  22. Hey guys... I've started taking this route and it's way better than coming over the old hendrik verwoed and platterkloof side. Although there's lots of hill climbing home... that's all good training. It was really fun and there's lots of friendly cyclists too.. so most cars keeps a look out for us It might be better with a MTB but unfortunately I only have a road bike but it's been all good so far! Can't wait for home time now!
  23. Hey guys I've been commuting a little while now... and moved from a MTB to a road bike. It's around 30km one way that's why I've changed to a road bike. But now the hills are way more challenging because my MTB had smaller gears that could take me up very easy, but now with the road bike the gear ratio it's a bit challenging. I see it as a challenge though but I'm really suprised how easy I took the hills before. I can't wait until I get fit enough to take it with a smile O and for those that's in Cape Town I'm talking about the "Tiekiedraai climb". Cheers!
  24. Thanks Riaan... I'll give my insurance a call soon and see how much the premiums will be.
  25. Hey Guys Who on here has insurance on their bike? My bike is worth around R8000... not sure if insurance would be worth it? Rather save up the extra cash? I commute to work 3 times a week 30km one way that's apart from my weekend rides... so it's quite a lot of miles. I've heard many who has insurance but I'm not sure who to go with and the price it will be? Thanks!
