  7. So here I am, thinking of getting a road bike after a few years of MTB'ing. I got myself measured up at the LBS and I was told a size 54 is right for me. Is it just me or does a 54 road bike feel like a tricycle compared to a Medium sized MTB? I like my 96'er with lots of space and I don't feel cramped at all. Sitting on a 54 road bike I first of all feel the thing is going to break - well, it's just a mental thing anyway, those thin wheels just make me nervous. Anyhow, the question is actually... If I buy a size 56 frame what would the drawback be, if any, or should I stick to the PC program that spit out the magic number of the universe (54) after being poked and proded in all the sensitive place :-) Ingo

  11. Groenies is great, was there both days last weekend and went like the clappers until I catch slower riders and then wait my turn to get past. No mess, no fuss. Only once in 3H did one lady just park in the middle of the single-track so I don't feel bad going (safely) past her at warp-speed and 'buzzing the tower' a bit. Some guy even caught me on the back-end switchbacks, which I wasn't doing slowly either, but he never asked to get past so I kept on pushing. It's also great for training depending on what you want to train on the day. If you want to do technical LSD (I know, those two are mutually exclusive) then take your girlfriend or family there and have a great time. If you want high intensity technical stuff, take your teammate there, look for all the ups and downs, and let the fun begin. Ingo
  12. I rarely cramp in a bad way because I can feel something start to twitch and then I back it off slightly. Last weekend I did the SA Marathon Champs, ran out of 'juice' and had to ride 45 minutes on empty to the next waterpoint. The combination of 38 degrees, high humidity, lack of juice and probably not enough to eat caused me to get a severe cramp in my right calf when I brake slided into a corner. This was 5k's from the end and I screamed like a girl while holding my calf. Once cramping starts there is nothing you can do, just try and wait it out and try to use your fingers to try and get the muscle to let go enough for you to limp home. After that it's survival and streching, ice and massage oil will let it heal over time. So, make sure you hydrate well, eat enough, have enough electrolites in your drink and watch for the signs of cramping. Don't overextend yourself, a cramp is the body's way of telling you to backoff a bit - a lot actually because you didn't listen to the subtle messages that came before. Ingo
  13. That's awesome. I tried my best to get a sub-3, my knobblies sang sweetly all the way but I only managed 3:16. Perhaps next year I can move up a group or two just to get a harder initial pull. Trying to pull in front doesn't always work so lekka, the skinny's come flying past just because I am on a MTB and it's a sin to slipstream a MTB in a road race, someone might just recognise you and you will never hear the end of it :-) Sub-3 on a MTB with knobblies? It's possible, it hurts, it's just out of reach for now. Ingo
  14. Also many thanks to the bunch of guys allowing me to tow behind on my MTB with knobblies. Our bunch maintained a good pace up to 75km where they fell off the pace. Thanks for helping me do an unofficial (no chip) 3:04. Ingo PS. The guy (and I know your number) that took a drink from his waterbottle and then, right before my eyes flung it into the bushes - you're an #$$!! PPS. And the really funny guy giving me stick about my knobblies as I passed him - I liked your attitude
  15. I believe in basic common sense. Buyer, if you say you will pick it up at a certain time, be there otherwise the sale goes to the next guy. Seller, if you are not happy to hold the stash for a day or two, say so so that the buyer can look for another one while you sell it to the next guy willing to collect - at the agreed upon time obviously. It's all 6 of the one and half a dozen of the other. I haven't had a bad experience yet but I am usually not so hardup to sell something that it must go today anyway. If you are, drop the price and Bump it a lot, the right guy will see it eventually. Ingo
