  1. What do you have displayed on your cycle computer during a) training, and b) racing? actual speed, distance, time, cadence, ave speed, heatrate, power, temp, ascent, etc.

For myself, I watch actual speed and cadence while training

And while racing, I watch ave speed and distance.

    So, what's on your dial?
  2. Hear, hear. Three days ago, discussed my tingling in hands problem with Chris Jnr (mentioned that I had come in via TheHub), went in to have a look at a carbon handlebar, placed order, took bike in to have it fitted the next day. Collected the bike the following day. Handlebar fitted perfectly. Expert job with tape.

Free bike valet service ... really looks like new.

And all for an outstandingly good price. And my ride is superb.

Highly recommended buying experience. Count me in as a satisfied customer.
  3. During my solo training side this morning - prep for the Argus - with all the deaths and injuries experienced by our brethren (and sistren) I realised that my mojo has been affected.

No longer do I carefree don my cycling kit, saddle up and ride off into the dawn. From the moment I enter the first turn, the hairs on the back of my bristle ... and who knows what may happen over the next hour or two?

Anyway, I was contemplating along the ride, that one needs a positive outlet for all this pent-up negativity. And I'm sure that there are others who feel the same way too.

Here's my suggestion, and let me know what you guys think?

I'd be willing to make a donation, say a coupla hundred rand, to a fund - administered maybe by admin, or someone honest, for them to have some big obviously visible "Beware cyclists" stickers printed.

Furthermore, I am prepared to go out one night under the cloak of darkness stick this on all the big road traffic direction signs (those big green ones) on all my popular cycling routes. This will deface, at the very least, the RH corner of the road sign, but will hopefully at least get the message across without detracting too much from the signage. In particular I'd like to focus on the spots where we've had some fatalities (e.g. Bottelery Rd, etc).

So what do you guys think? Can this work?
  4. Just heard some further details from a friend who drove up to EL for the weekend: apparently my late friend left home for a training ride at 7am,  and was killed at around 7.10am

He went up a small incline in a residential area, the road had no shoulder, but solid white barrier- line in centre, bus approaching in opp. lane., unlicensed driver in Golf behind bus was impatient and saw fit to overtake crossing the solid white line!!

My friend was hit from the front and the entire RH of his body was destroyed by the impact. I hope to God he went quickly.
  5. Sorry to be the bearer of some bad news. Neresh Ramsunder (45), who hailed from East London, was killed this morning while on a solo training ride near his home. Details are understandably very sketchy at the moment, and all we've heard is that he left home at 7am and was knocked down by a motorist at about 7.30am.

Neresh, a real gentleman, started cycling about 18months ago and was a regular visitor to Cape Town. It was, in fact, on a training ride that I met him. He completed the Burger Sanlam and Argus Cycletour with us. Just recently he completed the 9-day George to Cape Town ride (the name of which escapes me) and donated his bike to charity.

He was owner of an engineering company and leaves behind a wife, two daughters (at Stellies Medical School) and a teenage son.

Rest well my friend, and enjoy your Monoq wherever you are!

    Condolences to the family.
  6. Just to report back: Checked with my local pharmacy on Fri. Got some Flutex which appears to have kept the symptoms at bay. Did the Bay City ride on Sunday ... which I should never have done. Lost 45min in 4 stops along the way with cramps in my left leg. First the calf at the base of Smits. A kind fellow cyclist stopped and popped me an anti-cramping pill (thank you sir!). Then half-way up slangkop ... same story. Then massive hamstring pull just after Kommetjie (thanks to the great PPA marshalls 4 in total who just sped past with nary a glance even though I signalled!), Then once again 2/3 up OKW. - Ham and quad both busted. I looked around me and took solace from the fact that I was not the only one.

Race was quite disappointing, considering what should have been perfect cycling weather. I run "hot" so quite love the rain. In retrospect the crap started right at the beginning where I could not find rhythm to my breathing, hence put too much on my legs.

    Lesson learnt.

  7. I've done the Will Engelbrecht  thing as well. But the problem is measuring the actual dimensions on my bike. My bike (Giant OCR1) has a different geometry to their diagram, and for the life of me I can't measure where the central axis of my handle-bar is, the axis of my cranks, and the height of my saddle with just a handymans measuring tape.

Cyclelab quoted me R450 and the guys sounded quite disinterested.

Francois Du Toit  quoted me R150, but I dunno I just get a funny feeling about his vested interest.

Like Marius I too have a fairly goo feel for my position on the bike. But I wanna do the scientific thing just to put my mind at ease, and be in the right headspace for the Argus. I'm sure you'll all understand.

    Further suggestions are welcome.

  8. A few mornings now I've woken up feeling like I been run over by a bus: achey and (now) unberable pain all over. Mainly neck, back, head, and tight hamstrings. My training time has been less than optimal so I don't think the cause is overtraining. My sleeping habits and conditions are still unchanged so that is ruled out. Stress levels (work-related) are high and nutrition is sub-optimal. I need to get my groove back quickly. The Argus is around the corner. Anyone been through this before? Supplements? Any ideas?
