  1. I have this system but cannot really claim to use it much anymore. I found it secure enough on the dirt with a little extra security, a tether attached to the bike and a zip tie securing the phone in the case. I never had it bounce out. However a serious grab at it at the traffic lights and I am sure the S21 would be vanishing down the road. I also would forget to lock the screen rotation and a good lean into a corner and the Map would be upside down on getting upright again!! Now I just have the bare mount! Saving for a Zumo.
  2. Pleasure, if you have direct questions re the Global 7500 I will do my best to answer. As per another post I have sim recurrent at the end on March so am getting back into the books. I am currently on holiday so a bit slow to respond but will do so. Our aerie is currently in the UK undergoing her first 24 month check. Tis a 3 week process. I am due back to the UK to collect her around 12th Jan.
  3. As you said, highly unlikely to lose both engine driven generators at the same time…..unless due to a dual engine failure. With a single generator loss with or without an associated engine failure you have the option to start the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) in flight. There are limitations though and I imagine that to be in all aircraft. For EG in our aeroplane you can start the APU at 45000 ft but only use it for electrical power. You need to be down at 25000 ft before you can use it for bleed air extraction…….so…..in case needed for pressurisation. In the simulator they offer up many scenarios which make you think a bit……always an engine failure…..so, 2 fire bottles, left and right 1 and 2 which can be discharged into either engine. In addition Bottle 1 can be used in the baggage bay and bottle 2 for the APU. So………engine fire and both bottles required to extinguish means there is no longer APU fire protection and it must be shut down. A “nasty” sim instructor will fail a system on the operating engine so to entice you start the APU………rest assured there will be an APU fire on landing so that we can run through the emergency evacuation procedures. in reality very unlikely to all happen on the same flight but a good exercise in procedures and systems knowledge! There are many scenarios, too many to try and run through but if I can answer questions I will give it my best shot! I have sim recurrent due end of March so it is a good time to be back in the books!
  4. LWB, thanks for a bit more gen on the different aeries, yeah, to be using the RAT in earnest would be a little bit of a nightmare. If lucky you would still have engine power as it deploys with loss of AC power……..however one is unlikely to lose both main gennies unless one loses both engines! My old Global XRS had 2 generators per engine, the 7500 has one per engine. I guess the manufacturer has decided it is reliable enough.
  5. As per LWB…. Our aerie is fly by wire. The control input via the side stick is all electric to three Primary Flight Control (PFC’s) computers. The flight controls themselves are powered by hydraulic Power Control Units. (PCU’s) The PFC’s operate with flight envelope protection. If the Primary mode fails the aerie reverts to a form of direct mode where you lose the flight envelope protection. In other words you can over bank, stall or steep dive the aerie and it will not self recover. The worst direct mode is when the flight controls directly power the hydraulic Power Control Units (PCU’s). The auto pilot does not engage and the controls feel quite sloppy. Flyable but would be a handful in gusty conditions to a landing with minimum viz! RAT allows sufficient electrics and hydraulics to fly safely to a landing at your nearest suitable en route alternate airport. It operates at normal cruise altitude and speeds…….however the speed and altitude would change depending on the reason for RAT deployment. Eg losing all AC power. It is more complicated but I hope that gives an idea….
  6. I think you have found a Gem of an individual there…..and not a Gem Squash. Tis always nice to find reliable peeps to help with ones bikes.
  7. Hi Swiss, we were so busy running checklist and bumping around that I did not notice! In all honesty, I believe it would be very little. Just my opinion.
  8. Ram Air Turbine…it is amble to provide emergency AC power at 9Kva which in turn powers the Essential DC. It also powers the System 3 hydraulics . This on our aeroplane anyway. It drops automatically if there is a total loss of AC power. The airliners have larger ones normally stored in the fuselage forward of the wing leading edge, as far as I know!!
  9. Hi there. It is noisy but not unbearable. There is no noticeable increase in drag although of course it will have increased. I did not notice any increase in thrust to maintain speed. It was very windy into Biggin, 28kts gusting 38, so the auto throttles were working a bit anyway! The whole test is conducted from 180 kts down to touch down. We had clearance from London Area to slow to 180 around 50 nm out as there is a fairly involved sequence of checks to carry out. We ran the APU as well to ensure back up power was available. The test is performed with slats out and 1st stage flap. The Hydraulic pumps are isolated to ensure the RAT can drop the gear off the System 3B (which is powered by the RAT) At 147 kts the AC power is largely shed from the RAT and it powers only hydraulics to ensure hydraulic power is available for landing. The aircraft will then only be on Battery power for electrics apart from the Air Data probes which still have power from the RAT in case of icing conditions.
  10. Flew from Kuwait to UK yesterday for the aeries first 24 month check. Had to drop the RAT on the way in to Biggin as an Operational check was required. Was good to see that it does all it needs to in the event of it being required in flight. Over Western Europe the temperature was -73 at FL430. We did pay attention to the fuel temp in the tanks but it never got below -13 so all good there! The pic with the aerie in flight is us passing an Emirates A380 cruising down at FL360 over Turkey. Normally I cannot get pics from inside the cabin, but no pax yesterday.
  11. DNA filter for my KLR looks like this make up, just oval conical if get my meaning. The kit comes with a special cleaning fluid but I just use Clean Green though I rinse it well. I do use the DNA filter oil though. My KTM 690 has a TwinAir foam unit, washed the same way but I use Motorex Spray oil on that.
  12. That would be awesome but I am only home end of Feb next year now. I have 5 days at Christmas but have family down from Josie.
  13. Decided hang my Ducati T Shirts by the bike. I have visited the stores in Montreal, London and Barcelona. Unfortunately the Rome store was closed for a holiday when I stopped by.
  14. A little of my adventures before returning to the desert!
  15. Just arrived home from Cape Town. We took a trip to collect this little beauty! 2010 model, so not old really but a nice example with minimal input to return to perfection! Little RS125
  16. Sadly I will be back at work and unable to attend if it goes ahead. Ordinarily…….yes, I would join from George!
  17. No, Boss had bizz in US. Will be at WEF in Jan.
  18. Ha ha, yeah, but someone has to do it!!!!
  19. I have been off duty in SA but needed to return to Kuwait for a 6 day trip just to fly as Augmenting crew from Kuwait to Miami. 14 hr 55 min flight time meant the third pilot was required. I left George last Tuesday 8th arrived Kuwait 9th, we took off 0330 local 10th out of Kuwait , landed Miami on 10th and positioned home 11th via Atlanta and Josie. Arrived George 13th………all for the one 15 hour sector. Anyways, some pics of arriving in Miami, from the jump seat. Normally when we stay we locate in the Marriott near the tall buildings left of the city pic…..Brickel it is, very lekker!
  20. This is a very pretty bike.
  21. The Rocket must be amazing, I would like to try one out at some point. Shear torque monster!
  22. Yeah, that Rocket 3 must be awesome. I would love to see how it goes against my 1098 on a little traffic light pull away……..not race hey, cannot say that loud anymore! I am in the hunt for a Busa…..this is a medium term project, perhaps a year or two, but a 2018 Gen 2 or a 3 year old Gen 3. I prefer the look and colour availability of the Gen 2.
  23. Picked up my new to me DT125 today. A quick blast around the garden and she parked alongside the XL600
  24. Was a surprise on the fork seals. I did not have a problem previously with this bike. However I do ride it hard offroad and in all weather. Turns out that the seal retaining circlip is very rusted and the rubber dust seals are beyond help. I did see this as I was drinking all the bike shops coffee at the time! So, I have ordered the entire units, bummer as Big Orange is parked up again…….but the 690 is ready to rumble!!!!!
  25. So, I arrived back from the Middle East sandpit on Thursday evening, Friday discovered a leaking fork seal on the Big Katoom. Of course a phone call to my preferred bike shop would have sufficed , but I had to head on down…….discovered that The Buffalo Rally was on this weekend. Very little info the net regarding the program so I trundled along on Big Zed on Saturday arriving in time for the mass ride and back to the rally site in Hartenbos. Was cool, peeps very friendly, music was good, hamburger less so. Beer remained tempting but off limits to this day visitor. If I am around for next years Buff I think I will head on down for an overnight. Yes, the gloves were safely stashed in the back pack, slow mass ride and very hot…….
