  1. This is the Vickers Viscount, Rolls Royce Dart turboprop engines. The DC 4’s at Rand had the P and W R 2000 Twin Wasps radial pistons. I flew ZS- PAI briefly, last century!!!!
  2. Horton flying wing, but I forget the model number. There is one in the Smithsonian, Udvar Hazy building at Washington DC airport.
  3. CFM56 as on the 737 400 series aeroplanes. (And more)That was the DC8 70 series and when re rengined the pressurization was achieved by bleed air from the engines. The turbo compressors in the nose were removed and I understand that the airconditioning packs were placed there. I like the DC8-73 and would have loved to fly that too. Looks awesome with the “big” fan engines. It burns about 60% of the fuel burn of the JT3 and was also much quieter. But sadly the old 8’s are ending up on the scrap heap slowly but surely. Inevitable really.
  4. That DC8 is perhaps the finest in the world. Atmospheric weather research aeroplane I believe. Flights would last 8 to 10 hours and after each one the maintenance and technical support was outstanding.
  5. Air intakes for the turbo compressors used for cabin pressurization, air conditioning and the heat exchangers.
  6. Since we have few older jet types under discussion, I have been very lucky to have spent a large part of my flying career in this fine machine. DC8-62, ZS-OSI
  7. Definitely one of my favorites. I would have loved to fly one of these.
  8. Ahhhh......start the bikes, they will get used to it! I have mine on battery monitors but I still start them because I like to hear them. Well, I don’t run the two old Honda’s currently residing in the lounge! Reason for their temporary lodging is the repainting of the garage and resurfacing of the floor.
  9. Quick run to Calitzdorp for a little port, just prior to lockdown. Out via Outeniqua Pass and Mount Hope road. Decided to extend the run back via Huis Rivier Pass and Ladismith then the tar road to Riversdale via Garcia Pass and then home via Mossel Bay. 300 km became nearly 500!
  10. Congrats on the new machine, wish you many happy kilometres! If you feel for company and you are in the George area after all this lockdown is done, shout, perhaps I can show you some cool routes in my area.
  11. The Owner of our Biz Jet cleared us to travel home yesterday, for 4 to 6 weeks.........not like we can fly anywhere! Just arrived in Joburg this afternoon. Better to be locked down at home than some little hotel room in Dubai! Our machine is parked up in the Gulf but maintained ready to fly, not that we would be able to get back into Dubai to collect it for several weeks. EK are putting many crew on leave, paid if available or unpaid if not.
  12. Thanks man! Although I am keeping the KLR, I enjoy the KLR in the dirt and love the simplicity for solo forays into the Klein Karoo. Last week I needed to go to Joburg for a flight medical so I went on the Katoom. Was brilliant......apart from the wind around Middleburg! I had around 6 hours of the trip up in rain, some very hard and unbelievably managed to stay dry with my R180 Agri Store rain suite. Bike was faultless and very comfortable as I had put Anakee Adventure tyres on. Two up on the dirt roads of Klein Karoo it is awesome, even with those tyres. We turned back from a two up trip over Montagu Pass on Monday due to the heavy rain on Sunday making the conditions real slippery, preffering to get to Paardepoort via Outeniqua Pass. That Katoom is a beast and now enjoying a well earned rest while I am back at work in Mid East. That GS looks to be a fine machine, if you are going to ride two up on the gravel of the Karoo I would recommend that as opposed to the ‘Strom.
  13. Hi Stephen, I had ordered a Remus can already as I did not like that little pipe. I believe strongly that the appie in the shop damaged the crappy carbon can by wacking the decibel killer in with a hammer........anyways, everyone learns a lesson hey, the shop gave me a whopping discount on the new Remus, am a happy camper.
  14. Boeing Field is where we fly to when we go to Seattle (once or twice a year). I love flying in there. We get free museum tickets from the FBO (handlers). I always pay a visit when there. Everett is amazing but I am not usually in Seattle long enough to head that way again.
  15. So.......when the carbon end can sustained some percussion maintenance damage with the installation of the decible killer (not me) a wee hot spot ensuded in the possibly cracked weave. The back pressure and of course shear brute force of the Orange monster blew a gaping hole in the pipe. The photos show some of the various attempts at field repair to get home! Just as well a Remus stainless end can is on order!
  16. I am on R350 pm for a 2015 KTM 1190 Adventure. I have no idea if that is good or bad, but it is bunged on to my household, car (a few) and other bike ( 3 more) policy.
  17. The Orange Beast swapped the street tyres for some Anakee Wilds........this is quite a laugh....silly grin times!
  18. I am , but not active much on their website. Message me here on the hub when you know your travel plans to George. If I am in SA we must do a ride for sure. I enjoy showing folks the great routes in my area!
  19. After much prevarication between a 2017 Africa Twin and a 2014 XT1200 this machine threw me a curve ball and stole my Randellas! A 2015 1190 by our Orange friends. Will Thursday get some Anakee Wild Tyres and a Remus end can. Buggar it is quick......though not as brutal as Big Zed the ZRX1200 R. Top speed is ridiculous for an Adventure bike and the various rider modes will take a bit of getting used to. Top box is now removed, as usefull as they are, I don’t like them.

  21. This one for Andyman. I like it a lot bar the belly pan. On these types of big old muscle bikes I like to see the whole pipe especialy if it is something nice ...........(like the Yoshi on Big Zed my ZRX)
  22. When a regular ‘Busa does not do it for you! Seen at the Kuwaiti Riders 10th Birthday event last evening.
  23. This strip is so similar to a place I used to fly to regularly in Cameroon around 20 years ago. The aeroplane although a piston twin was hardly more appropriate than this little jet. A Piper PA31 Chieftain was the ride back then. Cut deep in the forest in the east of the country, the short, and often muddy strip was surrounded by hundred foot tall trees. Challenging times!
  24. Nice Eddy, thanks! Like your explanation.
  25. Yup, I am happy to land up to 10 kts TW in dry (runway length dependant of course). And agreed, on looking at the video, that looks like a Contaminated runway, more than 3mm of water. Compounding their problems. Very sad to read of possible catastrophic inflight failure of ZS CAR. I still do wonder at that. I have to have trust in engineering and maintenance, unlikely that aeroplanes just fall apart. But it has happened I guess and then likely weather or poor maintenance related. Could also be as a result of pulling hard g in a terrain avoidance manouvre. I hope the investigators get to the bottom of this. Comment has ceased on AVCOM.
