  1. Well put. In fact these are (IMO) largely separate issues. There is a real lack of direction in this thread, it feels like a badly run meeting. Ignoring brands for now, all that matters is that the trails will need to be maintained and if we are clever about it, have more built. I would happily contribute both my time (I live in stellenbosch and ride at JH often) and money to trail building, but will certainly not do it for some haphazard group that, for all I know, could fall apart tomorrow. That said I appreciate what appears to have been a lot of time and money invested by others so far. The maintenance and building of trails at JH will, in the long term, need to be formalized into a group/organisation based on similar models that have been successful elsewhere (either in SA or globally). It needs to be turned into a decent trail centre, as we have a great tract of forestry land and a logging company prepared to indulge us - this is a rarity. Does anybody know of any decent trails here in sa that have an on-going building and maintenance scheme? How do they work as an organisation?
  2. The only way to settle this....
  3. The bloke at Ride In is (very sensibly) basing his plans on the UK trail centres which are a couple of steps ahead of what exists here in SA. The potential here is phenomenal though given the terrain and climate.
  4. It sounds like Scott were within their rights if they donated bikes to the shop. It seems a bit odd to hold jonkershoek riders to ransom over a Scott sign at the coffee shop - you may end up with a mutiny on your hands given how popular it is.
  5. The more good trails there are, the more incentive there is to buy a bike. Or conversely, why would you buy a nice bike if there weren't good trails? So to me it is a commercial decision more than it is giving back to the cyclists. But as a person who was going to buy an expensive all-mountain bike anyway....it's a win.

    Gear Ratios

Yeah it isn't. I just went with the front brake because it mean an easier job with using the old cable housing! Do you suggest the back brake as opposed to the front brake, or in addition? I do fear that I will jam on the front brake one day and, well it never ends well. Will give it a paint job eventually, when time and funds allow.

    Gear Ratios

Thanks for the superb feedback. I've used the old derailleur as a tensioner, trimmed the bars and turned upright and got lucky with the gear ratios - perfect for my ride in to work. Currently the old derailleur is a bit noisy, so with time I may look at alternatives, but it all works fine for me now.

    Gear Ratios

OK - well I'm going to test out the 53-18 I started with tonight. I'm not sure my little chicken legs will handle it, and if so, will swap the big chainring in the front for the medium (39 tooth) one. I have a flatish ride to work, but I'm not exactly Fabian Cancellara either.
  9. I need a brake lever for my single speed project, I have the calipers and cable. I'm battling to find anything on gumtree and the hub. Anyone out there got any that they want to sell? Or know a decent one to buy?
  10. I'd be happy to help out/volunteer here from time to time. Based in stellenbosch.

    paint removal

Thanks Fanie. Like many I was disappointed that the stripper was of the paint variety - even though that's exactly what I'm after.

Thanks mate, good to know. let me have a think about it and a look around myself. Will be in touch.
  13. Sorry for the multiple posts, I just wanted to make a point. That and I was having some trouble with the website.
  14. Decided not to go with the hire bike. Too risky, thanks for the input too. Dawels - yip I've hit the same wall. Now I have to decide to either splash out on the carbon version (R40K although think I can get a 10% discount) or look for a new bike. I'm not keen on looking at another brand - I loved my camber and then absolutely loved the stumpy on a test ride. I really don't want to spend any more than R30K though. Other options could be Pyga 120 and santa cruz tallboy (although unlikley to find that under R30K).

    paint removal

Cool, thanks, will give it a try. And then once that is done - any recommendations for how/where to give it a nice coating? Most people seem to get them sand blasted (why?) and then powder coated.. I'm looking for a professional glossy looking finish ideally. I'm based in Stellenbosch so any local options would be appreciated.
  18. OK so I've finally found my frame... an oldish cannondale road bike: Is there any reason why I can't use the smallest cog on the existing casette, get rid of the others and use the spacer to put it in the right place?
  19. I'm sure this question has been asked 100s of times in single speed forums but.... what is the best way to strip paint from a bike you'd like to custom paint? Thanks

    Gear Ratios

Hi Folks, So I managed to pick up an old cannondale road bike that I want to turn into a single speed but I'm not sure what gear ratios are "standard" or common. All I want it for is for commuting to work. I'm not trying to break any land speed records but at the same time only have a few gentle hills to climb on my ride. So what the bike has at the moment is a Shimano RX100 crank that has 2 chanrings - the bigger one had 53 teeth and the smaller one has 39. I've attached a pic of the crank, although have already taken the chain rings off. Then at the back I have a 4 cog casette (see pic) with 18-27 teeth. Luckily it also has a lot of spacers which (I presume) will help me get the alignment right between the front chain ring and back cog. Anyway, my question is, what sort of gear ratio should I be going for? Is 53-18 crazy? Perhaps 39-18... Suggestions appreciated Thanks for the help.
  21. Hi All, So I'm in the market for a stumpjumper, having ridden a camber for a few years. My dilemma is; I could buy a nice shiny new 2014 stumpy comp for approx R28K, OR I could buy a well-maintained second hand 2013 stumpy comp carbon for R20K. I really can't decide. The comp carbon is a better bike and is R8K cheaper, but it's used, I wont have any warranty or any LBS service as it's being sold by a bike hire company. I know them and they look after their bikes though. Any got any suggestions or experience with either bike? Thanks
  22. Cool, thanks. What is the best way to remove the original paint job? And then what coats are required for the new (pimpin) paint job? Sorry, lots of questions.
  23. Thanks guys. I've found a couple of 1980s peugeot road bikes that could work. Both peugeot rapports. Any reason why they wouldn#t make a good conversion project?
  24. I'm 6'0", so that generally falls into the large category, or typically 56-58cm frame size (not always applicable). I was thinking singlespeed, not a proper fixie.
  25. Hi All, I'm new to this forum and new to fixies (I swore I'd never get one)...so be gentle. I'm going to buy a really nicely put together/refurb'd single speed even though the frame is marginally too small for me. I like the components on the bike and its not too small as to be a problem, so I will just keep riding it while I look around for a slightly bigger frame. Does anybody have good recommendations for frame types to look out for? What normally makes for a good conversion project? Where are good places to look(?), so far its just been gumtree. FYI I live in Stellenbosch. I understand "Racer" type road bikes don't really do well due to their vertical dropouts, so horizontal dropouts are a must. I'm looking for other guidelines along these lines... Thanks
