  1. First run was 5.4km, second run was 2.7km. i don't think they measured from inside the gate but rather from when you got onto the road.
  2. Yeah, was there, was pretty tough! Finished in 1h57m, always happy to do these events in under 2 hours.
  3. guy is a roadie, looks like he is a commuter to boot so probably goes bare headed daily (just a guess) i ride both road and mtb
  4. I think that I would at least think about what the biker said, no ones likes it when we are told we are doing something wrong, however, I certainly wouldn't behave the same way this chop did. I am a fairly highly strung and aggressive persong yet I still do not go around swearing at everyone who may happen to say something to me, be it right or wrong. This is going to go on and on with different opinions so let me just say that i have learnt from this and i hope charlie brown with no helmet decides that perhaps he should wear one. i also hope that he does read this thread and realises that his vulgar language was not necessary.
  5. i shall certainly ask her
  6. simply because we feel we have an obligation to do so. whether it's right or not is clearly an issue for some. i wouldn't want to read about some cyclist who's cracked his head open because he wasn't wearing his helmet. cyclists already have such a terrible rep with motorists and this sort of thing doesn't help. you must also understand, going down the hill this guy was travelling at the same speed as the cars around him +-60km/h
  7. Many cyclists of all ages have been breaking the law, by not wearing their helmets as required by the National Road Traffic Act, 1993(Act No.93 of 1996). A chief traffic officer confirmed that it was illegal to ride a bicycle without a helmet and said an enforcement of the law would follow a public awareness campaign. He said that the department had not been enforcing the four-month-old law, blaming the three-year interval between the passing of the law and the date of effective enforcement. "It would be unfair to enforce the law while nobody knows about it," the traffic officer said. "To be honest, I don't think any provinces have done anything about this yet. An education drive needs to be launched to make the public aware of the new law." In October 2004, regulation 207(2) of the National Road Traffic Regulation became effective after being passed three years earlier. The regulation orders the compulsory wearing of a protective helmet that is properly fastened and fitted while riding a bicycle or being carried as a passenger. Traffic department officials will be meeting soon with chief magistrates to decide upon a suitable penalty for breaking the helmet law.
  8. i'm not claiming to be a moral saint here
  9. If we all just minded our own business you wouldn't be reading this post
  10. My wife was not abusive towards this moron and I think that as cyclists we have an obligation towards other cyclists to remind each other about the rules. Do remember that it is actually law to wear a helmet when cycling. I naturally called this arse some very tasteful things after he called my wife a bitch, but you can't really blame me now can you. Let me explain the story as it happened so you can understand why I got so upset; 1 Point out to wife that there is cyclist (going same speed as the cars) going down hill with no helmet 2 As we start going up hill we pass said cyclist, wife says 'where's your helmet', not swearing and no name calling, i hear a fading 'yooouuuuuuuuu' from cyclist and can only assume the preceding word was also unsavoury 3 we hit traffic at the top of hill and cyclist comes past us and proceeds to call my wife a F@#$ing bitch and I think there was something about her mother as well 4 I completely freaked out as I thought this to be unnecessary, I changed lanes and then stopped in the petrol station slip way, cyclist turns into side road, wife freaks out bla bla bla there was no need for this little man to cycle past us and hurl abuse, if he felt it was not our place to say something, then all he had to do was carry on cycling or perhaps just say 'you're not my mother' or 'it's not your problem that I'm not wearing a helmet' bla bla bla
  11. To the arse cycling up Hill road in Randburg ~ 5pm on Friday, go @#$% yourself buddy! Next time someone asks you where your helmet is it's because YOU SHOULD BE WEARING ONE! There was no need for you to call my wife a f@#$%ing bitch! My wife and I are both cyclists and you are just a dumb knob! I sincerely hope that one day you come off your bike and split some skin on your noggin, maybe then you'll know why we wear helmets in the first place! You dumb sh*t! You are also very lucky you turned off into that side road because I would have kicked your arse!!!! YOU ARE A WANKER!!! There, I feel better now.
  12. You had to have seen that coming from someone.
  13. Gives new meaning to the name SteelyDan!
  14. Me thinks Rebel Taylor hasn't been getting any! Totally agree with the traffic light issue but calm down dude, gonna give yourself a heart attack. You gotta ask yourself if it's really your problem if a select few cyclists are too arrogant to obey the simplist of rules. And I would also agree that there are certain situations where (after making sure it is completely safe) it is ok to go through a red light, for example, very early hours of the morning, vehicle triggered lights etc.
  15. I've been riding the cradle again for the past couple of weekends and must say that there is a huge improvement with regards to cyclists riding in the cycling lanes (which are mostly useable). Since I've only been riding on Sundays I haven't really seen how the clubs have been behaving, any comments?
  16. 405 man, 405! has both running and cycling settings. This watch has some really cool functions you can use to train with, map your routes that you've ridden on google maps, store them back to the watch and then race against yourself next time around. measures speed, distance, altitude, hr. has online training log as well as offline training log.
  17. I was so embarrased when I started to retaliate and when I started saying the @#$%ing traffic light is... I realised it was red, egg on my face!
  18. While driving to fetch my indoor trainer from Chaunce yesterday I almost went through a red light, I lost my mind for a second!! Had a real blank moment!! So, to the cyclist crossing CR Swart/Dale Lace on Beyers Naude yesterday who screamt "Wake Up!!" to me, I am really sorry!! And thanks for only saying wake up, I would personally have pulled out the 'french' dictionary if I was the one riding the bike! I really don't know why I was just simply just going to drive into oncoming traffic, I was in a world of my own at that moment!
  19. Shall I edit my topic to 'that area around the lion and rhino park then?
  20. guess i should dust off my bike and go see for myself. it's just really frustrating when you see the attitude of some cyclists out there, like they own those roads!
  21. Is there something wrong with the road 'extensions' that cyclists are still cycling across the width of the entire lane? The past two weeks I have gone to Teak place and I must admit I have not been in that area for some time before this, to my absolute amazement there are what appears to be cycling lanes, used only by a select few who must be the intelligent part of the road community. Even if I give a friendly hoot to give warning that I am approaching a group of cyclists I still have to go into the oncoming traffic lane to pass and then you have the odd twit (used twit in place of a much more suitable word which would have me removed from the hub) who has the nerve to give me a one fingered wave. With all the posts about cycling safety, I must say, part of the responsibility falls on us to ride safely, this would include riding in lanes made for us or at least near the edge of the road, and not across the entire bloody width of the road! I feel better now.
  22. I'm probably only fit enough to hang around for about a 50/60km ride but I'm more than capable of matching your average speed.
  23. I'm in Sonneglans, just off President Fouche Drive near Malibongwe, I'm keen for weekend morning rides, no time during the week.
  24. I couldn't agree more. Running' date=' much like road biking, is merely a torturous and masochistic task, requiring very little technical skill with no real variation. Ever seen a runner smiling? I certainly never have, but I've never seen bigger grins than after a succesfull big downhill run.[/quote'] clearly you're a mountain biker. roadies used to be considered rude, i think the mountain bikers can now call them selves the smug chosed a-holes who much like surfers, think they're too cool for the rest of us! i've never seen a mountain biker smiling while climbing hills either, they too have these stupid little smirk smiles when they've finished a ride, and to make them look even more pathetic, they're covered in mud and dirt. twits!
  25. A RACE AT 4:45 AM on a tuesday morning, hmmmmmmmmm not sure about that. I agree 50 vs 1 is a little out numbered but the problem with moving out the way is having to move into the path of Jane so and so comming in the opposite direction in her X 5 at about 140km/hr on her way to gym. One is faced with 3 choices.... 50 angry runners, playing chicken with an X5 or climbing the pavement with those nice rims you just bought like a month ago. Its not a great position to be in. What are was this in? It may be best to try and get hold of the club chairman. These morning runs are often well organised by a running club. I can't think of many clubs who would be very happy with their members taking over the road, I know our chairman takes this sort of thing quite seriously.
