My bike's been broken for a week, and I've been sick for another. Same feels...

I made a mistake Monday... tried to (at speed) transfer from the road to the pavement. Front wheel got on, back wheel didn't. Did about a 10m tail slide before gravity won. Left side is roasted, and I'm missing a fair bit of skin off my elbow. Cycling home this afternoon, though...

I really want to start commuting again. I stopped because I'm scared of the Fountains area - have to go through there on Christina de Wit from the CBD (which is fine) to Botha avenue. Does anyone have any updates regarding the muggings in the area? Has it been sorted?

Nee, jy het klaar gesê ek is vet! I might have read it somewhere on this thread, but what is the take on pepper spray? Thinking of trucking along a canister on commutes...

Mine is 80 bucks each... I have two so that I can see both sides of the trail

Friend of mine clipped a pedestrian that was looking one way and jumping the other. He was doing 40km/h. Totalled his bike. I almost also connected a pedestrian that kinda froze in the road, then went the wrong way when I got close to her. Eyes everywhere!

Went through Rietfontein up to Soutpansberg, then through Sunnyside, Botha to Midstream. Scummyside was a breeze in the morning, but very busy late afternoon when I went home. But it was still a lot of fun. Things I've seen (probably mentioned already): It's fun. I want to do it again.MTB is a must. Road bike is fine if you can plan your route, but obviously if you have to be somewhere specific that is not always possible. Hopping sidewalks on narrow roads is heavy work.Left my clothes at work, but forgot about underwear (tactical error).Bridges are scary places.SUV drivers are oblivious about the width of their vehicles.Going home is downhill Roadie peletons are scary, especially those that rely on the person in front to be everybody's eyes.Pedestrians almost always say hi.

I'm keen on cycling to Midstream from Wonderboom. Car route is through the city, get onto N14, N1 then onto Brakfontein (30km). Freeway obviously no-go. Old Joburg has a nice wide gravel shoulder, but so many potential suspects wander along the same road... If I try to avoid the CBD (also lots of potentials) and use Botha from Fountains (another issue), my route becomes 40km, which is more or less 2hours... Somebody is obviously going to tell me to man up, but muggings aren't fun... Otherwise some route advice will also be nice?

Last year one guy fell and broke his arm, the other fell into the bundle of razor wire lying next to the trail. Got cut really badly. Both at the same spot.

Jikes! That's expensive. Didn't enjoy last year though. Bottlenecking was horrendous.

Will somebody with some organisational skills (not me) please get this off the ground? Will certainly join.

Here in Gautengeleng it's all XC and marathons, with scores of budgies. Or that is all I see. Would love to go on an Enduro, as the snaking downhill part of a ride is always the most fun for me.
