  5. I adore van gaalens… great ride, lots of options for difficulty and distance... must ride it more.
  6. have a gshock or two in my collection and a green luminox. love them all.
  7. That's the most awesome watch - absolute classic and would you believe the humble roots from which the GShock originated. I LOVE G shocks
  8. complete insomniac - operates on 3 hours a night max... workaholic entrepreneur, fabulous combo fair to say though that he also has ALL the tools. He speaks in one video about needing to create a part for Draco that he just molded at 3a.m. his workshop is kitted!!!
  9. Have a look at that hangar that Mike Patey owns.... #drool. On the field, a few stories, office based there, stunning. The guy has skills though, and boy can he build a plane. Saw draco in Oshkosh last year, boy shes impressive.
  10. Very interesting YouTube videos on the halt in production of the A 380 - Turns out its not as economical as originally thought, unless transporting passengers from a very busy hub. Many of the a 380 flights were not even at 50% capacity. Its a big aircraft to fly and expensive when empty. Emirates had a huge order (140) of them that have been cancelled. So it will fly or decades to come but wont be manufactured after 2020. Interesting turnaround.
  11. when you get a chance go through the "dirty john" series on Netflix. also excellent - a good watch for a 1 season short binge...
  12. OZARK - Netflix - series, 2 seasons, 10 episodes of 50 minutes each - stars Jason Bateman - excellent series.
  13. did you ever get these sold?? given away, discarded ?? im sure we can do something better than turfing them
  14. PS there is an Airforce day at swartkops either today or tomorrow so you may find some increased aircraft activity in the centurion, Waterkloof, pretoria area.
  15. Touch and goes at kitty hawk?? then a small nav between western side of wonderboom and grand central. weather this morning was interesting so either low cloud or IFR conditions kept him out of his destination. stayed away from Lanseria so maybe just a training flight ?? Familiarization / type rating conversion > speculation - I have no idea what hes doing...
  16. @ SwissVan - I know it as "for sure" as reading it from the partner in the plane who was discussing it with the other partner in the plane who was the pilot at the time of the incident. There is a thread on avcom in which the plane owner outlines what happened. So whilst hearsay, I would believe the story to be accurate. Yes - it has happened for sure that pilots have missed pitot covers, bungs and even …. wait for it.... the freaking tow hitch... its happened!! @Longwheelbase - ordinarily not. @LWB again - yup. a preflight inspection is the first thing that you are taught. Many pilots are guilty of not doing it thoroughly enough. Many pilots are distracted during the process and miss things. It shouldn't by any means happen but it does.
  17. Once landed and almost at a complete stop, the nose dug in and they had a prop strike. This probably caused a broken crank. If any observation / criticism to me made it might be that after the landing the pilot should have cut the mags. if he had done that then the prop wouldn't have struck and been damaged. That said - when that donkey starts misbehaving one really does have to think quick and make quick decisions. getting down safely is all that is priority. It may be (the jabiru is a slippery little plane) That he needed the propwash from the engine to enhance rudder authority and for that reason didn't cut the maggs. I say well done for a safe LOB. Pilot and pax fine and plane will be recovered and used again. That's what you train for.
  18. No it wasn't the reason for the prang, but most pilots will keep cowling bungs, chocks and pitot covers on board. one never knows when you may have to divert or inclement weather may force you down. Always wise to have the stuff on board. Most diligent pilots will want to avoid further damage, so once the landing off base is done... cover up and keep her as safe as possible. Suspected reason for emergency is in fact Carb Icing. The engine didn't actually fail, it was just unable to maintain power at over 100o revs which for that engine is min. beach landing was unavoidable and the oke did very well. Aircraft nose wheels are notoriously weak.
  19. On the subject of Grippens… memory some may have... one very pleasant Friday evening I got home and was just in the process of beginning to chill when I heard this almighty racket... Fortunately my house has a balcony on the second story so I raced outside to see and had a beautiful view of a grippen low level over North riding. Turns out Lanseria had asked him to hold abeam the dome and even the 4 minutes he had to wait created havoc in Fourways North Riding and sundowner !! I believe he needed jet A1 or something similar for a display the next day and Lanseria was the most convenient place to get it ( Mate of mine runs Lanseria plumbing) - All my neighbours were in the street watching. was awesome but you realise the Humbling power that that machine has...
  20. Okay okay - I matriculated in 84... so screw you all a memory of mine. I grew up in Waterkloof in Pretoria and during our primary and high school years to hear and see the squadrons of mirages blasting overhead was not uncommon. in Fact at the time it was an at least once / twice daily event. We were on Waterkloof hill so when they came over it appeared very very low... and sometimes was. Would rattle the windows properly. Waterkloof and Swartkops were BUSY air force bases as was Hoedspruit and a few others. also its a known fact that if Amelia Earhardt would never have got lost if...… she hadn't left the kitchen... sorry, couldn't resist.
  21. You've heard of the copper belt in Zambia right ?? There is about a 99.999% chance that the Chinese paid for it directly or indirectly - they've pretty much moved in in a paid for (and ravaged) everything else. Whats a 65Bar jet between friends... ??
  22. Oh and lastly - when in that formation. the okes flying 2,3,and 4 (in the diamond) are not looking at where they are going. They are looking at one thing and one thing only, his "wingmans wing" keeping that separation is critical and is the separation is okay - he will be.. focus on the wing
  23. My guess is threefold, and its subject to correction. 1. Minimum 4 hours hard practice every single day. (research on you tube) they sit at a boardroom table prior to flying and the air boss (number1) literally sings them through every maneuver. They sit eyes closed and listen to him, listen to his voice and visualize the flight until they dream it every day. Then they do it again and again and again. 2. The jets are not light weight and are at 300 kts + so turbulence while still there is potentially less affecting that for example a LSA plane 3. Since they are in such tight formation I would guess that the airplanes are all hit by the same air at literally the same time. Imagine a group of surfers waiting for a wave. As the swells pass they all rise and fall in unison. ?? that's a guess though Points 2 and 3 I do stand to be corrected on.. Just my guess.
  24. Interesting story about this plane is that for the observant of you, it is painted in the GEE BEE racing plane color's of the 1930's. The lads responsible for the GB racer were the Granville brothers. Hence GB. This plane was built in the states by two brothers Tom and Bill hence the Tee Bee livery. Bill was apparently quite sick and Tom finished it in his honor. Brought to SA and owned By John Varty before selling it to my mate. Great fun to fly - Vans definitely has a winning formula with their range.
  25. attached a pic of the plane I'm currently flying. Belongs to a mate. Just a bucket full of fun and a pleasure to fly.
