  1. Thanks for the comments guys. So no arguments about the 26" not being a capable ride. Sorted.
  2. Hi. I have two MTB available to ride the CTCT on. Firstly a 26" hardtail, older scott hardtail (~2005) with 3x9 (42-32-32 Chainrings and 11-34T casette) secondly a 29" Dual sus scott (2019) with 2x10 (36-26 chainrings and 11-36T casette) An online gear ratio calculator says I can obtain a higher AND lower speed for the same cadence on the 26" Thinking that the HT will be 1-2kg lighter (have to measure it still), AND the fact that the HT will lose less power, when pedalling, due to not having a rear shock, which bike would you guys think is the better option to do the Cape town Cycle tour with? I'd obviously have to be doing enough training on that bike as well. I'd have to buy slicks for the bike I'm picking either way. (Also, why are MTB slicks so cheap in comparrison?)
  3. What you say here ties exactly in with what I feel, and what the Black sheeps wheel builder told me. The hoop quality wasnt the best. To be expected from the entry level model, so I'm not complaining. He also said, due to different strength spokes and a cheaper hoop getting the spoke tensions even was not possible. I've come accross a rapide hoop I'm going to buy and will be rebuilding the wheel with better spokes. Will get a matching hoop sometime for OCD matters and use these as "road" wheels for the argus sometime.
  4. It's the tyres and rims that was put on by CWC, maxis 2.35 Forester https://www.scott-sports.com/za/en/product/scott-spark-970-bike I'm within the weight limit, CWC checked this before I even walked into the shop Tygerberg trails is where I ride. I don't do big jumps and I've done 1000km on the bike so far. I took the bike to Black Sheep bikes the first time I had 4 spokes that broke ( some of them while riding on tar road to work), and the mechanic there said that he had that exact same model bike there with 4 spokes that popped. Owner hadn't even ridden on the trails yet, just gravel roads. I retrospect I should not have taken it to BSB, just because of warantee claims/investigation.
  5. I've popped 7 spokes now in total, and have heard of at least one other scott spark 970 (2019) owner that's had 4 spokes break too. I get that spokes break, and that breaking one would cause more to get hurt, but after telling my long story to CWC, and them offering to have the wheel looked at, I barely got feedback from them when collecting my bike. This is not a rant towards CWC, since I'm done with them. I just want feedback from other owners. Regards. Wynand.
  6. Thanks very much guys. the advice is appreciated!
  7. Hi guys. I recently bought a Scott Spark 970 with a pair of Syncros X25 rims. The rims and wheels are tubeless ready, and I want to do it myself. I've had a look to try see on google but cant find any specs on those wheels, even on the syncros website (sign of a cheaper wheel set??). What rim tape width should I buy for that specific wheel? Regards. Wynand
  8. Hi guys. I've got to convert a new set of wheels with tubless ready rims and tyres to tubless. Looking to do this myself. Has anybody used the following kit from Sportsmans before, and did it work properly? https://www.sportsmanswarehouse.co.za/product/sportsmans-warehouse-tubeless-convertion-kit
  9. http://www.evobikes.co.za/schwalbe-durano-26-x-1-10.html Currently on a clearance sale for R496 (RRP R795). I'm looking for these or gatorskins for R400 (or less ) if anyone knows of a place.
  10. Just an update. My seatpost is waiting for me at Flaandria. Thank guys.
  11. http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/pictures/10000/nahled/sea-gulls-on-post-23441279546776IbWB.jpg Sea post?
  12. Spoke to Ivan at the shop, they'll get one next week and let me know. Thanks!
  13. All good Otero. I really thought you pulled a fast one on me. I'll give them a shout. I still want to use the frame for myself. I'll go have a look at your bike as well, is it the frame you had here that day? sprayed red? If I can't find one I'll go the ebay route. @the nerd, its a 2005 scott aspen frame.
  14. So last year i planned on building my SO a better bicycle. I found a chap on in the classifieds selling a Scott frame for R500. Perfect I thought, thats the brand she likes. The plan was to rebuild my bicycle over onto her frame and then start working on a new bicycle for myself. Everyting went perfect until the last component. The seat(post). Turns out, the reason the seller didnt want to use this frame wasnt that he "found a better frame", but rather that he had to find a better frame because he couldn't find a seatpost for this one. This of course he didn't divulge to me when I asked if he had a seatpost for the frame as well. 6 months later I have sorted my SO out with a bicycle, but still have this frame I can't do anything with. Two thoughts here. 1. Don't be that guy that sells stuff here for a hidden reason. Be up front and honest about your wares. 2. Does anyone know where i can find a secondhand/cheap 26.8mm seatpost locally? I live in the Cape so if there's a shop here, that would be awesome. My only alternative is to grind down a 27.2mm seatpost by .4mm but I fear that's a "tad" unsafe.
  15. Hi guys. I have a 1980's Peugeot frame that's 58cm big. According to all charts I should be riding a 54cm bicycle. Would anyone be interested in swopping a similar condition/age/type frame with me? I want to get the bicycle sprayed but would like to see if I can get a proper size frame first. If you want to see the frame I've got some photos on the site from when I started getting components together.
  16. Eppie. That would be awesome, thanks. The only picture I have as a clue is from this bicycle: http://velospace.org/node/15906 Its the same frame, but I wish mine was in same condition Could I meet up with you somewhere?
  17. Does anyone know of a bike shop (table view/brackenfell areas) that would sell a seat post bolt for my 1980 Peugeot road bike? None of the shops I've gone to have them.
  18. Thanks guys. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html also comfirms that I should be ok going with 28mm tyres. Any suggestions for make/models and shops to give a go? I live in Table View and work in Brackenfell. Primary purpose would be commuting as said before.
  19. I currently have mavic rims on my bike with 23mm tyres. They're old and will need replacing soon. I've measured the outside width of the rims and it's 19mm. I also use the bicycle for commuting (and just riding around). What is the maximum width you guys recommend I go for on the tyres? I'd like something wider than the current 23mm since I only read about benefits for doing it. btw, its an old ss frame so basically any width would fit the forks. TIA. Wynand.
  20. Where do you ride to? Just to make sure, the H stands for Hurry? I can understand MTFU but not so sure about HTFU.
  21. Exactly the reason I asked this question. I feel bad for not commuting this week so far (and probably the rest of the week too, but just don't think I'm lus for the wind.
  22. Just wondering. When looking at windguru/your favourite weather app, at what predicted wind speed do you guys go, "Well I guess I'll be taking the car tomorrow" ? Also, is it different for commuting and just riding?
