  1. Guessing it's a South African thing. In Europe every single gym has their rates on the website. And bigger gyms with more locations always have one standard fee for all of them (also it always means you have access to any of those gyms, doesn't matter in which city you go).
  2. You win! Here's my best buy of the year I can think of: http://ep1.pinkbike.org/p4pb11647757/p4pb11647757.jpg
  3. You read all the benefits in the comments here. If you want to give it a try for free just take off your shifter and set your front derailleur in the middle ring. It doesnt have the benefits of riding a 1x10 narrow-wide chainring, but it will give you an idea how the rides will feel like with only 1 chainring up front (wether you can make it and feel like you could do without the triple up front). For me personally 1x9/1x10 is the way to go. The simpler the bike the better I like it and more i enjoy it (why i prefer my track bike over any road bike on flat roads). Actually the perfect set up for me would probably even be a personally modified 1x7 drivetrain, made from a 1x10 set up, but with bigger intervals, but thats a whole other story.
  4. Cheers! I will probably be out of town for the next 2 weeks, but I'd love to join you guys when I get back.
  5. Anyone down to do some riding tomorrow afternoon / early evening? I found a sick and very technical descend from the top of Signal Hill all the way into Bo Kaap. And it is actually a legal / not illegal trail, which is pretty challenging.
  6. No need for Marco to repond here in my opinion. Everyone is on his side, so he already won without even joining the discussion.
  7. Pretty sure that one only fits on some specific Sram hubs. And it was crazy expensive. What the owner of this bike is doing is a much better idea. I have actually condisdered doing this too. Running a single speed hub with 6 cogs means that the flanges are further away from eachother, creating a stronger rear wheel, also with less flex. I would even like having less gears, but keeping the same reach of a 9sp cassette (for example 36-11, with less cogs and bigger intervals). Main reason for me would be that I'm from The Netherlands, a very flat country. Our XC trails usually don't exceed 50m in height difference, causing short climbs and short descends. Because of that having less cogs with the same reach would mean much faster shifting between gears. But even here in South Africa I wouldn't mind this set up. I love minimalistic bikes. Usually minimalistic means much less maintenance, less costs, and a more pure ride where less can go wrong. About the non-clutch rear derailleur on a n/w chain ring. I currently ride a 105 road derailleur in the back since my XTR broke. I only had like 3 xc rides with it, so it's not a great test, but it hasn't dropped yet.
  8. Sounds like fun! I have to work Thursday and don't know my schedule yet, so I can't say if I will be able to make it (my work hours usually vary a lot). I really love the idea and like what you are organizing
  9. What distances do you usually ride and whats your average speed (on flat ground, in a non-windy situation)?
  10. I love riding track, but also riding track bikes on the streets and through traffic. Yesterday I was riding mtb up kloofnek road in cape town, a 2km long road that brings you to about 330m height, and some guy on a track bike suddenly overtook me with easily twice my speed. I could barely Make it all the way up with the 34-24 ratio I was in, so that was insane!
  11. Thanks for the invite Alexis. I would love to join your group tomorrow! Where is this Iris you are talking about? Googled it but couldn't find any street / place called Iris neat the Kloof Street.
  12. Cheers for the share, I had no idea these privacy setting excisted. I never start/stop my Strava at my door. I always ride at least a couple of blocks before I turn it on or stop it somewhere else.
  13. Cheers for the invite Yusran. Just saw that it will be 30 degrees tomorrow, so I think I'll pass the 130km ride this time. That will be too much for me in this weather.. I'm not used to temperatures like this at all... Have fun though!
  14. In my opinion this is attempted murder, and that's what the busdriver should be charged for.
  15. Theoretically what you did was good. Imagine that every single time they almost hit someone or cause dangerous situation, someone would smack their mirror off or breaks the window by throwing a full waterbottle to the car, they would become much more careful. If by the end of a regular day of riding their whole car is messed up and they can spend 10.000 Rand to a garage every single day to replace the broken stuff, all of them would become very careful drivers in less than 10 days. But in reality, you being the only one doing it, and them being crazy dangerous people, it's best to stay calm and not risk anything.
  16. Hey guys! Anyone down for a ride this weekend? I was thinking maybe Table Mountain or a ride towards Cape Point, but I'm also open for any other ideas
  17. Do you not think that even tho people still ride their cars on it, it is still safer for the cyclist, because they notice something is different and pay more attention to what's happening on the green lane, instead of just riding ahead on the road and not paying attention to the cyclists on the side of the road? Asking this because I haven't been there myself and haven't withnessed what the situation is like. Just wondered if it woul have this pro or not.
  18. I won't be able to make it tomorrow morning, since I only will be able to repair my bike tomorrow afternoon. Have fun and hope to see you next week!
  19. Cheers for all the replies everyone! That was really helpful
  20. I was wondering, what gearing do you guys use for singlespeed riding in real mountains? (and on which wheelsize is that?) It seems so hard. Coming from the flat country of The Netherlands single speed is nothing special. Even the XC tracks don't have more than 40m difference in height. So you can just speed up during the downhills so you'll make it easily up the uphills, even without gears. But what if the uphills are 10 minutes long? Do you walk or just have a very small gearing on your ss bike?
  21. When searching for fixed gear bikes with belt drives I ran into this. Not only relevant to the discussion, but also has a green frame Loving the concept of this: http://gamerfitnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/English_Cycles_017_2945.jpg
  22. Why not? I vaguely remember seeing some concept fixed gear bike with a belt drive. Can't remember what it was tho. EDIT: just checked online and saw quite some fixed gear bikes with belt drives. Checked out the Gates website and they say it's possible to run it on fixed gear bike, but they recommend to mount brakes on it, so that the belt drive isn't the main brake. This seems like it's rather a legal question. If the belt drive really is stronger than a chain, lasts twice as strong as a chain, and doesn't stretch, like they say (haven't had one myself so can't tell from my own experience), than having a belt drive would actually be better on a fixed gear bike than a chain. Unless belt drives suddenly snap in half without showing any wear before? In that case a chain could be better since you can see on the stretch if it needs to be replaced before it snaps (and you have no brake).
