  1. i see what you mean...it is a shame...come on bikehub...that table deserves a win...support this man.
  2. i am busy building a deck...first time...when you cut the poles...what do you seal the cut parts with? I am using H4 treated gum poles (or so the shop which supplied them said)
  3. i see you winning hands down
  4. I never thought i would have to ask...i have a small problem...what to do with all the sawdust. i have been burying it in the ground...problem...ants...lots of them. i have spread it all over my gardens...ants. i dont have anywhere else to dump it...thought it might be a plan to look into compressing it to make fire lighters or something. any ideas?
  5. i have had a very close encounter...i generally do woodwork after hours or on the weekend...i have learnt to switch off the power and put hand tools down when i dont feel 100 %...then rather focus on design or planning for the next day. I have however hit 2 nails clean off my fingers with a hammer...hitting 6" nails into wood. i have also shot nails through wood and through my fingers...holding the wood using a nail gun...especially when they dont go straight through. My son lost 1 finger on the table saw...warned him about cleaning up while working...left the table saw running...slipped on a plank on the floor...put his hand down onto the saw...finger across the workshop...3 hours sitting in ER waiting for a doctor...by the time he got to see the doc t was too late to save the finger. wearing gloves while working on a drill press is also not a smart idea...i had a bit catch a glove and almost rip my fingers off one tool that makes me nervous...the band saw...they seem so safe...yet they are deadly. working in the construction industry...i have seen some serious accidents.
  6. i find meths works the best for removing labels.
  7. just be very careful with your fingers under the wood while holding a short piece of wood....it ok with big sheets...but when you need to just cut that little piece of the end...dont hold it.
  8. its not directly related to wood work...but a tip for when plastic gets all sticky. i found a pair of ole oakley sunglasses (old matrix style) which i had stored in the top of my cupboard...was cleaning out noticed them...when i removed them from the case the rubbers on the side of the glasses had like oily yucky film of *** on them...i tired everything acetone...meths you name it...left them out in the sun...it just got worse...so i gave the glasses away. same thing happened to my two way radios...the e/l testers i got at a good price...so i bought a couple...they are stored in a cool dark room...took them out to use...they were all sticky and yucky...i had a bottle of baby powder which i use for my electrical rubber gloves to help fit and remove when i am all sweaty...covered the radios in powder...bingo ...problem solved.
  9. I will be upgraded equipment soon...if anyone is interested i will post stuff i will be selling in this thread.
  10. if you dont want to spend a lot of money...i highly recommend the maktec mt 360 ...this thing is a beast ...super strong and runs for ever...i have one mounted under a table and boy thing works...i use it to profile my fishing rod racks (lots of them) one of my hobbies ... https://www.facebook.com/customrodracks.co.za/
  11. We have the bosch 10.2 volt blue range of cordless machines...the most used tools in my kit...i highly recommend these tools...all of them are good...no but about any. We also have the 18 volt cordless range...mostly still using the old brush machines and i can tell you there is nothing wrong with the old brush tools. We use the hilti 22 volt range for site work....we also have some of the 36 volt range. The new makita brushless angle grinder...awesome some machine...seems a little slower than the older version...however it is holds the speed when cutting thicker material. the small 10.2v bosch impact driver is no toy...that little machine can push long thick wood screws without a problem. The hilti impact drivers...mmm not the best. The makita impact drivers are stronger and have a better feel when working with them...i find the new brushless one has too many setting...the older 152 is simple and easy to use (however it has issue with long term use) We have tried and tested most of the cordless machines...i am at a point where i need to choose a brand...Hilti or makita...bosch is not an option (range too small) it looks like it is going to be makita (due to variety) the only problem i have and why i havent chosen to kit out the maikta...when it comes to brick and concrete...hilti is my first choice. for most machines...the makita chipper which we use for chipping out after chasing walls is still the best...it runs a full day without heating issues...a couple other construction companies we work with have also bought the same chipper and are very happy with it. hilti gets credit for products designed for site work...like the sleeve anchor bit and pin...i had to install hundred of these things while installing threaded rod...what a pleasure...drill ...pull the bit off...hammer the sleeve secure using the drill ...pop the bit back on and off to the next one...the gx 120 is one of my favourite tools...everything gets pinned with this thing...i buy black strapping and use it to secure piping after chasing or just to hold in place. let me stop here...this is something i am very passionate about...my workshop and site equipment...i wish i could employ a person to run my business so that i can spend my day on site designing and installing equipment...been blessed the past 2 years with 2 massive projects which required hundreds of man hours of installation work.
  12. be smart and dont cut off the plug top...get yourself a round plug socket and fit it to an extension cord so that you dont have to carry around a big plug...makes it way more mobile. The other option is a weed eater extension cable.
  13. if you ride with a decent good quality bib...loose the saddle bag or make sure it is not rubbing on the inside of your bib...gonna cost me R 1.5 k for a new bib...thanks to our chairman who pointed out the problem...i was told to check my saddle...which did...there was no damage...couldnt understand why it got a hole...then riding back to the parking lot i felt exactly where the bib rubs on the strap on the saddle bag is where the hole is in the bib....no more strapped saddle bag for me...if you have skinny legs you shouldnt have this problem.
  14. when it comes to impact drivers...makita wins hands down...i bought the new brushless impact driver...the only issue i found ...it has too many setting...it is going to take a while for me to get use to changing the setting for the right application...the drive speed is ridiculously fast. i looked at the the bosch one below...it just wasnt strong enough to drive the hilti concrete bolts.
  15. that sucks...that was the response i was expecting from gedore...instead they replaced the unit...didnt even need an invoice with proof of purchase.
  16. and even after 25 years of using a ratchet...it finally gave in...i took it back to gedore in new germany...they said they would get back to me about repairing it..a week later they gave me a brand new one....not that i use the ratchet much anymore...i have cordless impact drivers. back in the appy days stahlwille was the best tools money could buy...like festool ...just out of reach for most of us. i am fortunate with tools...being hands on i believe you are only as good/fast as your equipment...my time is the most expensive part of my invoice...so i make sure my customers get value for money...i make use of what ever is required to speed up the job...also being an electrician there is never power on site...just about every power tool i own is cordless...it also helps with the tax bill. pity i canned tapatalk (ads got a bit much) i would have posted a pic of my charge station.
  17. back when people used pagers...fax machines and dot matrix printers...they used cords to power the units keys in chucks etc...in this day and age...we have a new technology called cordless...with lithium batteries which can run brush less machines for hours...no cable to attack you...now i am looking forward to pipe less vacuums
  18. not a bad price...R 2500.00 ...at a good price you get them for R5k I found a makita planer /thicknesser almost brand new in a pawn shop for R3k managed to get it for R2500...had a look at the replacement value...i nearly had a heart attack.
  19. thanks...i have a RP2301FCX (this is an awesome machine) ...i use it to cut out 18 mm profiles with template...this machine is flippen strong...i do the cut out in one cut. i dont really want to mount the RP 230 under a table ...but i look forward to the photos...maybe i can make it work on the maktec...it would be handy. hopefully my triton will be back under the table by the end of the week...and we will be up and running again.
  20. i agree the router works hard...as i mentioned to Clive...it is not a warranty claim...the gear is worn( i use it a lot...i just need the machine repaired)...i have no problem paying for the parts and the repair...the reason i have the triton under a table is because of the fine adjustment from the top...i have maktec routers under the other tables (no fine adjustment required) and makita routers for the general routing...unfortunately non of the makita routers have the facility to adjust from the top while under the table...i know you can buy an attachment to fit to the other routers....that was the next option if i couldnt get the triton repaired.
  21. this is what has happened...i sent in my triton router for a replacement of a worn gear...thinking it is a moving part...there should be stock of the parts in the country...you sell a product...you keep spares for like bearings...gears etc...unfortunately there is no triton repair centres in Durban...so i had the option to send to jhb for the repair or take it to a reputable power tool repair company in Durban (JMM power tools) ...well thats where the wheels fell off. 5 emails almost 2 weeks later i am told to collect my router and pay the quote fee...even after i had sent an email to Vermont and attached the email from JMM power tools. Then i started a social media post...within a couple of hours i had a response from Clive at Vermont...explained my problem ...was told to leave it with him and it would be sorted out...apparently someone got the codes mixed up and they do have the parts. i have just got off the phone...my router will be ready for collection this week.
  22. i assume you know what you are doing and how the BMS works...i dont try fix the packs ...i rather strip the batteries out the casing and use the good ones for torches...i purchased an 18650 smart charger with display ...which can charger 1 batteries at a time
  23. Even buying quality brands like the ones listed above...some are just better than others...you have to figue out which are the best of the various brands...the Makita planer/thicknesser for example i picked up in a pawn shop for R3k...this machine has worked 12 hours non stop day after day and still runs. The dustless chasing systems for example...Hilti vacuum wins hands down for brick dust...i dont use the a makita vacuum to site anymore...no matter how many filters you use...however their little double blade chasing machine is the best for dustless brick cutting...if used "slowly" ...the makita vacuum get 5/5 for wood work runs non stop but the hilti a 2/5...after a couple hours of wood dust it shuts down....it cloggs the filter even with the ding dong thingmabob bumping the filter.
  24. Vermont sales are the SA suppliers...i wish you luck trying to get spares for your machines.
  25. Beware of buying Triton routers...the gear seems to have stripped for height adjustment...i sent it in to a quote to repair...i was told Vermont sales cannot supply the parts required to repair the machine...i must pay for the quote and collect the machine as is
