  1. Thanks guys. The Fenix 6 Series is a bit pricey for my current available budget. I got a very good deal on a Fenix 3 HR and since I figured out a way to charge it on the fly using a power bank in the few instances where the extended battery life is required, I decided to go for that option. The clip-on charging adaptor can be put on the watch and then strapped back on my wrist, with the power bank in a pouch on my arm above the watch. The specs and features of the Fenix 3HR is good enough for my current needs and the unit was cheap enough (R1900????) that I can upgrade to a 6 series later if my needs change. I would have paid up to R5k for a Fenix 5X Plus if the battery life was good enough. The charge port does not allow the charge on the fly option either, so my main events next year would have been to long for the unit.
  2. I am looking at buying a wearable GPS unit for MTB as well as other sport (Kayak) I am a bit concerned about the battery life while using the GPS, since reports suggest that the Ultra Track function gives useless tracking accuracy. I like the Fenix 5X Plus functions, but the charging port sits in a position which makes "charge on the fly" somewhere between extremely cumbersome and impossible, while the Fenix 3HR has a charging port which will allow connection of a power bank while using the unit. I am not going on extremely long rides all the time, but I do want to do the Trans Elands and Trans Baviaans next year requiring 9 to 12 hours and 18 to 24 hours respectively. These events, and the training towards them, will make battery life a concern. Has anyone been able to charge a Fenix 5 series "on the fly"? Is the 5X Plus worth the extra money and hassle to charge when compared to the Fenix 3HR? I need to link to Strava Navigate routes generated on the computer, on tracks and trails that are not always designated as roads on typical navigation systems. Have the ability to charge during long activities or have a battery that will last more than 24 hours during GPS use, with acceptable accuracy. Any thoughts on this or advice would be appreciated.
  3. I used to have a couple of "Issues" with strava's route planner, when it was still free. The first one, that should have been very easy to fix, was the lack of the ability to change a route from one way to two way without having to re-work all the points. It is a minor issue if your route is on a road, but a major pain the backside if you do manual entries on single-track, off road routes. The second issue was, during manual entries, the system at times refuse to take a point that you pick, resulting in inaccurate distances where the route or segment winds down a single track.. Can anyone comment on whether strava fixed these issues subsequent to the route planner being excluded from the free version? I currently use komoot to plan the routes, but if strava fixed the issues I will take the membership option. If they didn't, there is no use for me to go to the pro membership...
  4. I have used the 25mm Gorilla tape. I must admit, as far as appropriately wound.... I have no idea.
  5. Thanks for the replies guys, will give it a shot. What I also figured out, is that there is an additional complication with the Giant P-CX2 and similar rims. The rim is very narrow, with a deep / steep valley. The result is that the tape is sitting almost vertical, with the uppermost part of the tape having additional tension due to the larger circumference. The tendency for this part is to "curl" back towards the inside to alleviate the tension, and this is the typical failure pattern I have observed. The quick application may have worked "well enough" with a wider, flatter rim profile, but the deep narrow valley will require the additional effort you described, especially the tube treatment. I was about to go back to tubes..... :-o Cheers!
  6. Hi, Not sure if you got any replies. It was suggested to me to put 2 layers. I have done it with 2 layers and worked OK for a while but started giving issues again. I am not sure why my tape starts to shift after some time.
  7. Just Feedback on this. I got the Gorilla tape, re-done the back wheel completely. Have done a 42,5km as well as 52km since then without any issues. Thanks for all the input. Cheers!
  8. Zuurbron unfortunately not operational anymore.
  9. Thanks for the replies guys. Managed to get tape yesterday, fixed the wheel last night and it is holding up so far. Weather was bad this morning, but will be testing soon. Cheers
  10. Hi, It is the oem rims on the 2012/2013 Giant Anthem X1 For some reason I am not getting an image uploaded into the discussion. Regards, Jan
  11. Hi, I recently started picking up issues with rim tape shifting on a tubeless setup. I have Giant P-XC2 rims on the bike, and had no issues for many years. In the past couple of months I had 4 instances where the wheel just went flat, and the LBS informs me that the tape shifted.....again. Can this be due to the wrong tape? wrong width of tape, wrong application, preparation or something totally different? I am burning to get on the bike 1st of May but I need to fix it without being able to go to the bike shop. (I have Duct Tape as well as very thick insulation tape available, but not new rim-tape) Understanding the possible causes will help a lot in planning the best approach to fix the problem. Thanx
  12. Any new development on this? Has Giant sorted out the frame design? I am looking at getting a Dual Suspension frame, and not many manufacturers sell Frame Sets separately. Giant was on of my options, but I would not want to buy a dud...
  13. Does anyone know more detail on how it happened? I saw the crash, it was terrible, and I am puzzled by the fact that Brammeier did not seem to enter the corner in good line, or appropriate speed. He seemed to brush the inside curb and carried on in a straight line at full speed as if heading for the trees on the far side. I am relieved that he survived, and our prayers are with him for a speedy and full recovery.
  14. Does anyone know where I can find route profiles for the 45km?
  15. At least (according to accuweather) there is not a high probability for rain on the weekend of 21st and 22nd Feb. Lets hope they are right this time.
  16. At least it won't be as tough as Mankele, but should be a bit tougher than Barberton (IMHO) I am doing the 45km..
  17. Would like to see the route profiles before I enter. at Mankele last year the Half Marathon had over 1500m elevation gain over 37km, while the Marathon had a bit over 1600m elevation gain over 63km
