Weight reduction makes a massive difference! You won't experience racing pressure in DD no matter how hard you ride. The pain comes from hanging a really fast bunch as long as you can. You doing Barberton 75 km? See you on the climbs!

See you at the creamy tart robox. As for running - should only happen when something dangerous is chasing you!

Age means nothing! Okay so I'm with you on the denial thing... I do the Sabie and Barberton marathons and they are very difficult endurance events but 94.7 is hard in a very different way. I finished the Magoebas 80 km in 5 hrs with much less stress than trying for a 2:55 94.7. There's your reason: you aren't going nearly hard enough on the road if you find them a walk in the park. If you are riding the 70 km marathons you wil find FAR less weaker riders taking part, they are often intimidated by the 70 s and ride the 40. Because its relatively easy to complete road events slowly there are much more less fit riders taking part (except Kremetart 175 or Jock). You riding Panorama next year?

You have probably got the MTB skill set less right. Either that or you really don't enjoy climbing or descending. I have a lady friend who is really fast on the road but very slow on her MTB and it has nothing to do with her fitness or strength but her fear of going downhill.

Much of the 94.7 is made up of folk who ride once or twice a year and come out for a day of fun. Guys riding with their friends, in cow suits and on Game store MTBs. Even Froome rode for fun (you might have beaten his 2:54 but doesn't make you stronger). If you weren't well into a sub 2:50 then you can consider yourself an average roadie too. Not bad, just average. In C,D and E groups the winning roadies hammer and the MTBers that keep up are very strong.

Much of their training is done on the road. Jansen Van Rensburg didn't seem too scared of anybody on Sunday...

Exactly. Easy to beat back markers anywhere.

If only I was fast enough to suck your wheel...
  9. Yeah, spending 6 hrs on a bike hurts more than burning it for 3!
  10. Ice cream bike?
  11. Ok give us the dirt now...
  12. Easy. Mine were: 2010 4:15, 2011 3:25, 2012 3:07 and I was riding with my son this year so could have been quicker.

Hey Eddy, most of us roadies ride MTB too, nothing nicer than a mountainous marathon. Karma was just killing slower roadies is all. My mates were clocking 2:48 from D, he would have bled through his eyes keeping up on a full suss, 29 er or not!

Wind made this year slower even though route was shorter.

All else being equal, your fitness etc., and assuming you were on a decent road bike (at least the equal in price of your MTB), you would probably take at least 20 - 30 minutes off your time. The road bike is lighter, probably 4 - 5 kg lighter than a full susser. It has wheel with less rolling resistance and your body position is much more aerodynamic. If you ride a compact crank with 11-28 cassette you will have more than enough gearing to deal with anything the 94.7 can throw at you and then some. In Tzaneen we have NO flat roads and the climbs are extreme and with a compact and the right cassette you can get up anywhere easily enough. If you really want light gears you can fit a SRAM WIFLI system or a triple which give huge rear cassette options. The gearing argument is only valid if you choose a road bike set up for flat riding.

Very simple. You were passing riders weaker than yourselves. Their road bikes give them a huge advantage on the descents and flats and they keep up with you but whenever the hills kick in you kill them. The riders of your own strength on road bikes were very far ahead of you. We have a 11 km climb of 700 m vertical ascent here in Tzaneen and I am 10 minutes faster up on my road bike than my mtb. You would have been much quicker on a road bike up or down the hills.

    94,7 G group

My son and I and two others from Tzaneen will be joining for a go at it.
  19. Gave up my carbon bike for one and @ 7,1 kg including pedals it's nearly 1 kg lighter and stiffer. Plus it looks good!
  20. Hahahaha. Thanks for making me smile!

    I'm with you in G.
  22. You mention one Internet source which I found as per you request and ignored the other two. I have no medical degree and don't claim to be a pharmacological expert so no I don't know what I am talking about. You, on the other hand are rude and opinionated and I will no longer discourse with you.
  23. You are arguing for the sake of it. You don't eat carbs but ask me to prove EPO is bad for you? I don't care enough about this to continue. Have fun.
  24. I am adding comment because I want to not to enlighten, convince or entertain you. Don't need to justify anything to you actually, you are someone who has spent vast amounts of time convincing yourself that bread is bad for you and now you want me to waste my time convincing you why taking EPO responsibly is bad for you? How about taking cocaine responsibly? Emphasis on responsibly? Okay, if you insist or are too lazy: This from Wiki: The simple act of increasing the number of red blood cells in blood raises its viscosity, which can cause it to clot or coagulate more readily.[20] This increases the chances of heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism, which has been seen in cases where there is too much blood reintroduced into the blood stream. Because blood doping increases the volume of red blood cells, it effectively introduces a condition called polycythemia, a blood disorder that has known adverse outcomes. This from sportsmedicine.about.com: Is Erythropoietin (EPO) Dangerous? Yes, EPO has its dangers. EPO injections thicken the blood, which increases the strain on the heart. This is particularly dangerous when the heart rate slows down, such as during sleep. The increased thickness, or viscosity, of the blood increases the risk of blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes. According to the book "The death of Marco Pantani" by Matt Rendell, some cyclists reportedly set an alarm each night to wake up and cycle on a trainer for ten minutes to jump-start their circulation and reduce the possible health risks of using EPO. This from medicalconsumers.org: This is the true story of an expensive anti-anemia drug that came on the market for one purpose; was heavily promoted for several unproven uses; and how the drive for profits led two drug companies to commit fraud. Kathleen Sharp, a veteran investigative reporter, describes what happened from the perspective of a drug salesman whose company pressured him into achieving higher and higher sales targets. The drug maker provided a playbook of tactics known to manipulate physicians into writing more prescriptions and at higher, more dangerous, doses. Eventually, the drug salesman-turned-whistleblower comes to the horrifying conclusion that over a half a million people have died as a result of this drug. Its benefits, if any, remain unclear; its safety never established. It is still on the market. Central to the story is one of the first biotech drugs to go on the market. Erythropoietin is the man-made version of human erythropoietin, which is produced naturally in the body and stimulates the bone marrow to make red blood cells. Epo, as it is called, became known as a “blood booster,” sold by Amgen and Johnson & Johnson under the brand names: Procrit, Epogen, Aranesp, and Eprex (Europe). Sorry, cop out or not, I am not going to read it all out loud for you. Use it, don't use it, half million deaths is more than heroin killed last year, even when used responsibly...
  25. Slow, you have hit the nail on the head, what matters is what matters to you. If you feel like a cheat you are one.
