  1. You should ride your own events then, problem solved 👍🏻
  2. Anyone who has spends a significant amount of his cycling off-road (preferably with Guides fitted) will find these arguments silly. There really is no comparison when it comes to modulation, control or reliability. I wouldn’t even consider riding any serious multi day event on rim brakes. Maintenance? Surely discs are even less trouble on the road? My Bianchi road bike is a rim brake version and I love it but should it ge stolen or smashed (heaven forbid) I will definitely be shopping for something with hydraulic disc stoppers.
  3. It is a motorbike.... just a very slow (read k@k) one! My problem with the ebikers at Sani was the riders were poor at “shredding the trail” and after getting ahead with their extra watts were slow on the track. Most MTBers have spent a few years working up to multi day events and learned a few skills along the way. On the mountain? Sure, whatever makes you happy. On a race? If you must. Just stay out of my way if you use your engine to pass me on the hill.
  4. Been off the Hub for a while but been on my bike quite a bit. Still in love with my Santa Cruz, just gave her an eagle facelift! Are you coming all the way to ride the 40? Come join us on the long one and get your moneys worth! Either way I’ll buy you a beer afterward ????????
  5. I’ll see you all there! Will be good to see you again Nick.
  6. This! Awesome event with everything you asked for.
  7. I've lost 45 kg over the last six years mainly due to excercise and healthy eating so I have some experience with this. You can lose weight eating anything if you maintain a caloric deficit which you clearly are. The problem is not that bread will make you fat it's that it has high caloric density, is very refined and has poor nutritional value. In other words it's bad for you even if you are losing weight. It lacks just about anything you should be ingesting except calories. As you get thinner it will become harder as you body uses less food just to exist and there are much better options to eat than bread.
  8. Santa Cruz Tallboy large frame. American Classic All Mountain wheels. Racing Ralph tyres. Shimano XT 1x11. Race Face bits and pieces. 11.4 kg ready to race with 2 cages, pedals and garmin.
  9. No, was very peaceful Saturday and Sunday, at least until we left at about 1:00. Sunday's ride was a bit muddy but otherwise very typical of Sabie, it's either hot or wet on the Sabie mountains but a great ride none the less.
  10. I'll be there. Bringing my son to race on Sunday so I will ride too. The mountain is calling!
  11. You aren't breaking any news. I don't deny the fact that it happens or exists, just opposed to the idea of ignoring or legalizing the problem. That would make competition untenable for many youngsters such as my own who manage to compete clean successfully at the moment.
  12. Both of my kids race competitively, your scenario is unacceptable to any parent of children who take their sport seriously. If they have to risk their health to win they won't compete and that may deter future stars who may be able to entertain you by setting the course on fire.
  13. Is Apple Pay available in SA?
  14. Drops are reachable but tilting my head puts pressure on my plastic disc causing spasms. A steeper stem makes the bike less stable and if the drops don't "drop" your position there is no point. A flat bar handles better and gives better control on the descent than braking from the hoods on steep descents. Here in Tzaneen we have plenty of steep descents!
  15. Also gives me an excuse not to work much in the front anymore!
  16. I ride this: I had a neck op and can't ride drops anymore. This bike is fast and agile enough but I have to be aware of my elbows when the bunch gets fast and tight. Its easy enough to fit in if you are aware. Like patchelicious said: just don't ride like a knob!
  17. BIG Mig weighed in at 80 kg, a long way from the numbers being discussed here. As for skinny blokes not having power, Froome and co would like a word. You don't win Olympic TT medals with no power! At 1.81 m and 128 kg I always considered myself "big boned" and "strongly built" but now at 81 kg I can see that I still have a lot of fat to lose. My power to weight has gone up, my power has gone up and I am much faster up and down. My bike handles better, stops more easily and corners more responsively. Anyone who thinks thin guys can't descend hasn't watch Nibali ride. There is no downside to losing weight for cycling except if you do it in an unhealthy manner and get sick. Wait a moment... I will be racing you guys at next years 94.7 or Magoebaskloof... ignore everything I just said and eat. Eat lots. Big guys CAN be fast.
  18. Bianchis must be celeste, it's like Ferrari red or Jaguar green. If you have the colour right you can put Shimano on. And MTB pedals. And even a flat bar. Here is mine:
  19. This race is a must do for those who love mountains. Steve and the SLC team have an awesome route through some of the best scenery you can find. Give it horns Nikc!
  20. I had a pair of XT levers seize up when the temperature hit 40 here in Limpopo. Had to replace the levers, no amount of bleeding fixes it. Shimano breaks are great but I learned not to leave my bike lying in the sun when it gets that hot.
  21. You guys are making it very hard to wait for my frame! Will have to hijack your thread with a few pics when it comes gummibear
  22. Sorry to hear ???? Ended up being a great day out for us, book for the three day next year, the missus and I will be there.
  23. See you lads bright and early tomorrow morning.
  24. I saw one of these 5010s at a LBS in Pretoria last week. Mike's bikes had them too when I was there. Beautiful bike, trying to convince my missus she should trade her flash in for one. To the OP, I use a Tallboy for marathon, XCO and trail riding and while it isn't ideal on the really gnarly stuff it's a lot of fun to ride.
  25. Change the brakes to deore (or Magura) and you should be good to go. Deore or slx components are not that expensive, cwc is selling slx rd for R550, but you will be changing from 9 to 10 speed which mean changing cassette, shifters, derailleurs and that is going to cost. We rode the Swartberg pass and good brakes are going to be essential especially on a tandem. My wife and I are also riding the KKK so see you there!
