  1. I bought a Cypher Carbon LTD 100 a week ago and have done 2 rides now. So gar I'm really happy with bike for the reasons listed above. I'm surprised by how well the DT Swiss shock and fork work - a delight to ride! I've only ridden Fox and Rockshox and in my opinion the DT Swiss is superior. Very happy with my purchase so far 😀
  2. We have formed a team for the 2020 Maluti Double 90 taking place on 18 April and still have a few more slots in our team open. We aim for a comfortably fast ride of around 5h30, with an emphasis on good team spirit and having fun along the way! Contact me if you would like to join our team.

Im also keen to join a team for the 2020 Maluti Double 90. Im fairly fast, just did the 947 cycle Challenge in 2h38 but the main thing would be to have a lot of fun! Anyone know of teams needing an extra rider? Cheers Anton

  6. What a sad way to start a weekend where we all plan great rides. Would it be appropriate for us fellow cyclists to show solidarity by attending his funeral? What if a hundred of us turned up? Or a thousand? Would our voice be stronger? Important to keep in mind the great respect we would need to show his family. But I feel that possibly we could use this tragedy to reduce the chances of future ones happening.

  8. Tour of Ara not niche! It is open to any South African built pre-1999 racing bike.... And we had a great time this year!
  9. Frame repairer in Gauteng? So the #tourofara claims another victim - my Petini's frame is cracked at the rear drop-outs. Also the rear axle snapped. Must have been a big bump somewhere along the 820km of Karoo dirt roads! Now hoping to find a person who can braze a new drop-out in place - suggestions welcome!
  10. I will be riding it on my late 1980's Petini - which just saw good service on the 2016 Tour of Ara.
  11. I am disappointed to note that one of the first things Mayor of Joburg Herman Mashaba has announced is the cancellation of the bicycle lanes project - see http://ewn.co.za/2016/09/13/Herman-Mashaba-puts-brakes-on-bicycle-lanes-project I can understand his rationale that the focus should be on providing services for the poorest parts of the city, however i feel that we (as a cycling community) have failed to make the case for the advantages cycle commuting can have on the lives of the poor. By being able to safely cycle to work people can cut down on transport costs and shorten their commuting time. Not to mention health benefits! Barriers to entry are relatively low, making this an infrastructure investment which could be enjoyed by all. I participated in the Freedom Challenge recently and cycled from downtown JHB into Soweto and back. That made me realise that the distance is relatively short - quite manageable for most people of average fitness. What is lacking are safe bike lanes which would connect Soweto to Joburg centre. The R70 million which was budgeted for bike lanes could (if developed in the right areas) have a massive positive impact on the lives of the poor. If bike lanes would appear to the mayor (and others) as a project just for the wealthy then we as a community have failed. How do we reach out and change opinion on this?
  12. Looking forward to joining you for this ride on Sunday morning!
  13. Any update on the outcome of this petition?
  14. Took the UTB for a ride on Sunday morning - it is great! The 35mm wheels roll over rough spots int he road, but are still fast enough especially when pumped hard. Below are some photos of the bike showing that the 650b wheels with the 35mm tyres dont look much smaller than the 700c with 23mm tyres. Also a photo of the sort of pavements i ride along taking my daughter to school by bike - explaining why the wider tyres are needed!
  15. My Urban Terrain Bike taking shape nicely. I needed a quick and light singlespeed daily commuter (must be easy to lug up stairs) which can handle riding on pavements hopping on and off curbstones; and has some style associated.... The frame is a 62cm Tommasini Super Prestige, but the original 700c wheels only allowed max of 25mm tyres - making the pavement hopping tricky.... I have now had 650b wheels installed (19mm Mavic rims) which accommodate 35mm tyres. Just waiting for the extended length Dia Compe calipers to arrive. Looking forward to taking it for a ride soon. Weight is just over 9kg - easy enough to carry up to my office. Got inspired by reading http://www.sheldonbrown.com/650b.html
  16. Eorica was amazing - 140km on beautiful gravel roads. Good atmosphere and camaraderie among the riders. Pit stops with locally produced bread, olives, tappenade and Muscadel! Not an energy bar in sight....
  17. Hi Loose Cog - i will be at the Freedom Ride tomorrow on my trusty old Petini wearing a loud RSA cycle jersey. See you there!
  18. Getting used to riding dirt roads in preparation for the Eroica on my 1987 Petini. The bike is running smoothly, I only need to swap to the regulation toe-clip pedals now. Some "interesting" experiences hitting loose sand and gravel.....
  19. I just ordered one of these from Amazon (6 speed Shimano freewheel hum 14-28 T): http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-MF-TZ20-14-28-Teeth-Freewheel/dp/B003EQ71QI I paid R385 on 18 Jan - including delivery form the USA - not too bad!
  20. A later 1980s Petini from Linden cycles - rides like a dream!
  21. This morning took my brand new 30 year old Petini for its first ride up Groenkloof ridge - lovely! Thank you to Eppie for arranging the delivery of the bike - all packaged well and even putting a new set of tyres on for me. I look forward to doing some epic vintage rides on my new beauty! I guess this bike hails form the late 1980s and most likely constructed from Reynolds tubing (unfortunately the sticker naming the tubing is gone). All paintwork is original as well as the decals. Will make a trip to Linden Cycle next week to show to them. Amazing how well the bike rides - dropping down the ridge at 70 kph it felt stable and smooth, soaking up the road bumps. Very responsive when climbing. Love it!
