  1. Hi all, I just moved to somerset west from Johannesburg. I work and live in Heldervue, right next to the lord Charles. Is there anywhere I can cycle to from work, ride a little offroad and ride back all within an hour? Thanks for any information you might have.
  2. It may well be the worst one you have ridden, but I find it really awesome... that's why each person should try the bikes for themselves. Same system as the trek fuel range. I got a good price from cyclefactory on the merida as well, but i didnt want to ship from there, i prefer the idea of having a store here if there are any come backs. The Price on the site is around R18000, but call them, they offered me a better price when i called.
  3. for R1300 more you could try to get a merida matts 1-20 1500D from westdene cycles XT derailleurs 2011 XT crank XT hubs XT triggers Fox suspension...
  4. Sounds dodgy that you move in and your expensive equipment goes missing a few days later?
  5. contact person at isikhala, importers of cube. (i am led to believe...)
  6. oops, I suppose I should include Paul's email address, apologies. paul@isikhala.co.za
  7. I like each in their own way. i don't like the giant frame look. it's ugly and reminds me of my old bomber. i forgot to add that i also contacted cube for pricing on some of their bikes, they have 2010 bikes going, if you are interested... this is the mail. Hi Linton I am still the correct person to contact. What size are you bike are you looking for? In your price range we have 1) XMS - R15 999 2) LTD Pro 100 and 125 R22 999 I have one 2010 AMS Pro 100 ER for R19 999 and one AMS Pro 100 RX R17 999. There is only one left each and size 18" (M). Dealers in the JHB area are, Complete Cyclist, Cycle Fusion, Cycle Science, The Cycle Hub. Please let me know if you require further details. Kind regards Paul Perhaps contact westdene for a price on a merida 96? as you say, similar config to the ams and scott, but you might get a better spec/price ratio than the cube (it wont look as mean as the xms though... ) But the configuration is (somewhat) specific to application, so, consider carefully.
  8. I don't know if this will still be temporally relevant, but here goes. I looked at getting this bike as well, the best price was just over R20 000, and after calculating the import duties using the formula in the online buyers guide on this forum, the R15000 quickly became just over R20 000. I took a chance and asked westdene cycles for a price on their merida onetwenty 1500-D and they gave one to me for R16380. The bikes are very similarly specced, with the merida being slightly better, i think. Different suspension configuration though. According to this theHubSa duties info the duties on a full bike are 15%, with VAT to be applied to the bike and the duties... (extract from the above link) The steps to calculate the total duties and VAT are: Calculate the Rand (ZAR) value of the invoice (including shipping). This should be done by converting the foreign amount (INV) into ZAR using the SARS exchange rate (ROE) for the date of export. This is the customs value. Calculate the import duties, using the amounts in Capricorn's list (ID%), based on customs value. These are the Duties (D). Add 10% to the customs value from step 1. Multiply this new value by 14% to get the VAT amount for the goods. Add 10% to the Duties value from step 2. Multiply this new value by 14% to get the VAT amount for the duties. Add the Duties amount from step 2 to the two VAT amounts from steps 3 and 4 to get a the total amount payable to SARS. Add the clearing fee (usualy R25 for SAPO and R100 for UPS) to the step 5 value to get the total amount you have to pay. All of the above expressed in algebra: CV = INV x ROE D = CV x ID% VATGoods = (CV x 1.1) x 0.14 VATDuties = (D x 1.1) x 0.14 TotalSARS = D + VATGoods + VATDuties Grand Total = Clearance Fee + TotalSARS
  9. I have been looking around at different bikes to get at the end of the month, there have been a few reasonable deals on 2010 stock, but I have decided to try and keep it 2011 so as to get the Dyna-sys stuff from shimano. I've narrowed the soft tail choices down to the merida onetwenty 800d, giant trance x3 and the cube xms. One bike will have better componentry in one area, over another... My choice (i think) will pivot on the suspension of each bike. merida - Rock Shox Recon Silver Soloair 120/X-Fusion O2RL Remote cube - Manitou Minute LTD 100mm, Air Assist, Remote-Lockout/Suntour Epicon 165mm length, Lockout giant - Fox 32 F125RL (Giant LTD Edition)/Fox Float R my knee jerk is that the giant system is better, however each bike shop has daintily danced around saying that if you don't service the fox stuff pretty often, you will have issues. The merida looks to be the best bang for buck, but i have never heard of x-fusion O2RL ever, and i have no clue how good or bad it will be. the cube is most expensive, looks the best (probably get bored with the 'bling' after a while though) but i am completely prejudice against suntour, anyone got any experience with the suntour epicon shock? The giant looks the least appealing of all the bikes. Am i hinging my decision on the wrong aspect here? is there a specific weakness that should make me cross one of the bikes off my list? Or are they all much of a muchness, and i won't go far wrong choosing any of the 3?
  10. Congratulations on the engagement!
  11. I am also interested in finding the 1000d for that price.
  12. Anyone at all?
  13. I'm in the market for a new bike, I have not settled on hard tail or soft yet. I came across this bike from solomons, the Fuji reveal 2.0 (http://solomons.co.za/node/1265) is there anything from another store that can compete with this bike in price and spec? This bike looks like a really good deal.
  14. Thanks!
  15. OK, I get that, Cajees is certainly not your start to finish bike purchasing mecca. but I wasn't asking about the store, I was asking about the tool, let us pretend that cycle lab uses it (i dunno if they do or not, this is pretend land) also, yes, i get pain in my lower back and knees, i've sold my bike now and i am going to replace it soon...
  16. Looking through cajees website I saw on their home page something called body scanning CRM. Supposed to use lasers to measure you and then set up your bike properly. Anyone have any more information about this? is it: A- impossible to live without B- reasonably worth it, but nothing that an experienced person can't sort out at a LBS B- something that will make a 0.00000005s difference in time C- snake oil
  17. as a disclaimer I don't mean that dunkeld was unhelpful, they just really seem to want to get out of the "cheap" bike bracket.
  18. I typed my magnum opus last night, and something went wrong with my connection and it disappeared, I’ve been reluctant to re-type all of that again... but here goes. Mikes Bikes offered stellar service, the guy didn't seem to try to sell us anything until he had gotten an idea of what the bike might be used for, he didn't push any specific brand and if I recall mentioned some brands that he didn't carry in his store. He was the most negative about silverback, basically saying that the bikes are rubbish on every level, quality of frame material, construction and geometry. He seemed to say that if you rode this bike baby fairies would lose their wings. When we walked in to dunkeld cycles, I joked with my friend about how expensive the place (stock) looked and that they would probably just point to the door after learning of our budget... I was not far wrong. The guy essentially inferred that they didn't sell bikes for the common peasantry. After I pointed out a sub 10k Merida on the floor he worked very hard to not sell it to us, saying that if we went to linden cycles or cajees we could probably get the bike for almost R1000 less than he sold it for. I’ve never seen someone work so hard to lose a sale, without actually refusing to sell the product to us. He was less negative about the silverbacks, saying that you could buy the bike for the component set, sell the frame and swap the parts onto a better frame. Northcliff cycles pushed quite hard for a brand I’ve not heard of and forget the name of now. Ok componentry, and quite good deals on swapping out components, with rebates on tyres for tubeless conversions... not bad at all. Excepting that I’ve found them to be 15 - 20% more expensive on components compared to somewhere like linden. they were the most positive of the negative responses for silverback... basically the feeling talking to the salesman was that if silverback was the last bike on earth, and you have to repopulate post apocalypse earth by using the bike offroad... we should consider doing so. Then we went to linden cycles, and I’ve used them for all my component and bike purchases ever (1 bike and lots of components and servicing) they are the most helpful bunch I’ve met, with mikes bikes competing really strongly. All other shops seem less excited and focussed on helping someone get the right bike. They were absolutely positive about silverback, the guy we chatted to said that silverback did suffer from substandard frames in the past, which used to be the reason for the deals you could get, components unmatched in that price bracket by any other brand. But he said that for the past year or 3 they've worked hard on getting that sorted out... the biggest step is to get frames designed in germany. He claimed that it worked. they eventually sold my friend a merida tfs 800 hard tail for R8900. So none of the shops seemed to really try to push any specific brand, they put bias on the brands they sold for sure, but apart from dunkeld who wanted us out before the stench of our poverty infected the stock they seemed interested in selling what would suit my friend the best. Mikes Bikes even went so far as to deride the name brand fundies that refuse to look at bikes on their merit and not by their brand popularity (he included componentry in that as well) which is why his powerful aversion to silverback raised the alarm bells in my head. made me consider that the rumours might be true. But from what I can see here, the consensus is in line with linden cycles opinion, that silverback offers comparable quality frames to any other brand out there, price for price (sometimes even hitting above it's weight class?)
  19. as part of your response, if it is that nothing is wrong with silverback, give your opinion as to why there is so much negativity regarding the frames.
  20. dunkeld cycles, mikes bikes and northcliff cycles. I've heard negative talk about silverback all over the place though, also in varying degrees.
  21. Recently I went bike shopping with a friend, we were looking for a hardtail 26" bike for around R10k, obviously a well specced silverback was an option. However, 3 of the LBS we went to were negative about silverback in varying degrees, from saying the frames were completely useless in both quality and geometry, to the frames being barely useable... but should be avoided if possible. Linden cycles however claimed that the new frames were good, that silverback went to great pains to have their frames designed in germany and that they were comparable in quality to the same priced merida's etc. Has anyone got some experienced opinion or advice? Edit: as part of your response, if it is that nothing is wrong with silverback, give your opinion as to why there is so much negativity regarding the frames.
  22. indeed, it's at a specific point of rotation. and only if the wheel is experiencing force from one specific side.
  23. yea, i do. but pretty sure it's not that ... I don't think.
  24. yea, kinda like that!
  25. For a while now i have noticed a wierd noise coming from my bike as i ride, I traced the noiseto the front wheel. If i lean the bike to the right the noise stops, lean it to the left and it comes back, seems consistent enough to say that it occurs when a specific portion of the wheel comes under a specific load (these specific points and loads are unknown to me at the moment :\ ) It's a metalic type clink. I'm riding on alexrims PC19. Any help for this incredibly detailed problem
