  1. Haven't checked into this thread for a while. Everything still ok in Koeberg? 🤘 I still have to do my own.
  2. Cool, so it's a mess. Was worried that could happen. I still have a news lead warm. They were going to pick the story up just before they opened. Hopefully, they can change the angle and we can push for opening up the permit system. This system also doesn't work for me - I live in the Deep South. Koeberg was always my escape from the in-laws in Melkbos 🤣
  3. That's good to hear. Was she able to apply on your behalf? Or must you go in person?
  4. I had a call with them this morning and you just have to fill out an A4 form, show your ID and then you get a permit for the year. The times are *** - I hope that will still change, by for example giving that power of authority to the security guys. But at least it's something. And you need a separate permit for your lightie, as far as I know at this moment. Someone of TableTalk is going to try it out today. If I know more, I'll let you know. I'm sure you can apply on behalf of your kids. Go try it out and show them that they didn't open it for nothing. 🤘
  5. KOEBERG NATURE RESERVE OPEN Thanks for signing the petition everyone. The reserve is open as of today but there is some admin involved. I have not tested it myself but the manager of the visitor center has told me that you can come in via the R27 entrance. At the second building to the left you can apply for a permit between 14:00 and 16:00 on weekdays. This permit is issued instantly. That's it. It's open. Thanks everyone! https://www.change.org/.../reopen-koeberg.../u/32390148
  6. That was basically last decade. We're nearing 1000 signatures. Powers that be (pun) at the power station are aware of the petition and there seems to be a chance. Some local press is following now too. Thanks for signing all. We're not there yet but I'll keep it warm. https://www.change.org/p/reopen-koeberg-nature-reserve
  7. Won't rickroll you with this one. There are plenty of options around Cape Town but a family-friendly easy ride on that side of Cape Town West Coast is quite hard to find. Cape Town is rapidly growing in a northerly direction. You can head for the Durbanville wine estates, of course. I don't live in Melkbosstrand anymore but my family-in-law does and I used to take my lightie there from the age of 3. Running behind a pram and riding laps. There's zebra, wildebeest, springbok, and all the other usual suspects. It has rangers and culling is done and there is money reserved for all of this. It was more or less set up as a means of Koeberg giving back to the community. A bit of nature around a nuclear power station. But it's not just the recreational thing. There is a visitor city that educates about nuclear and nature. Closed. "Just because" of Covid.
  8. I saw that. FoBCA has nothing to do with it though and won't even be able to pursue this matter. I am aware of some efforts from the past, like opening a Facebook page and all. But that doesn't have same reach as petition that is raking in 700 signatures in 3 days. Eskom doesn't need to do anything but that doesn't change the fact that part of Koeberg Nature Reserve's mission is to have public access, as outlined in the Management Plan for the Koeberg Nature Reserve approved in 2016. It was open, then it was closed due to Covid and now they've changed it to operational reasons. Friends of Blaauwberg aren't going to change that, that's for sure. But the public may. 9. Yes, it's been shared in Table View, Melkbosstrand, Malmesbury, Atlantis. If you're in any other CT West Coast groups, then feel free to share. I've also shared it in a number of cycling-affiliated Strava groups. The petition is gaining momentum. If it goes past 1000, I'll get the local press to tap in.
  10. Thanks! Never say nooit 👊
  11. Howzit everyone, It probably won't be easy but it's worth every effort. I'm engaging the Melkbosstrand/Duynefontein community to sign a petition for reopening Koeberg Nature Reserve. I know there are dozens here who have been eager to gravel in Koeberg. The other day I spoke to Koeberg security and they say that they're waiting for a signature from head office. Perhaps our signatures will bring their signature to the table. https://www.change.org/p/reopen-koeberg-nature-reserve The petition is brand-new, so don't be demotivated by the small number. aweh. 🤘
  12. Some shots were made by Chris Hitchcock over the weekend between Glencairn Beach and Dido Valley. I live in Glencairn and can say this is what every morning, especially at the weekend looks like. Careful out there, mofos. https://www.facebook.com/690453962/posts/pfbid02iQB6YPcHUHHFZ1oodf6bGwqgqA3swACMkYHy3rvwFxktpfmVN995yTYxoRZb9FGWl/
  13. Of the 2,741 km, about how much was corrugated gravel? We all love a bit of gravel, but endless days on corrugations, how do you deal with it?
  14. I commuted that stretch for a few years, loved it. Only got purposely got cut off by a Merc once - and got nearly hit by people turning into the avenues in Fish Hoek from time to time. I stopped using Fish Hoek Main Road after that, and chose the avenues instead. People don't look in mirrors before turning. Honestly, I find a wide road with options more scary than Kalk Bay - Muizenberg. Ride fast and latch on to flow of traffic. An awareness line would be already something though. Half a meter of colour paint on both sides of the road. A cycle lane will be fantastic, but where is it going to go? And if it's there, are cyclists going to use it? Take a ride up the West Coast and see how many are riding on the road instead of on the cycle path they paid for...
  15. Reporting for a friend. He left the bikes on the back of the car overnight, the rest was history. On his propery though.
  16. Stolen: Axis Caprice 2013 When: 20 January 2021 Where: Cape Town, Western Cape From back of car. Get further details about the incident in the Stolen Bikes section
  17. Stolen: Giant Boulder 2005 When: 20 January 2021 Where: Cape Town, Western Cape Stolen from the back of the car, in early morning. Get further details about the incident in the Stolen Bikes section
  18. Respect. Looked like a huge job.
  19. Had a fantastic day out yesterday. Wannebees from Somerbosch is easy vibes, some climbs are a bit long for short legs, but with some support do-able. Did 11K there and then clocked another hour at Southeys. First time there. Somerset is lucky to have a public bike park which is bigger then The Bike Park in Uitsig. Saw lots of local kids becoming the new goats of tomorrow. Had a good takeaway from Fish 4 Africa in Strand and a rad surf afterwards. Bloemendal is a winner of course, we go there sometimes when we are with family on the West Coast. He'll enjoy that more though when he is ready for a 20er.
  20. Thanks a lot PhilipV. I can confirm that Wannabees Day Permits are on sale at Somerbosch. So I'll take him there first, then go to Southeys, and round it off with a little surf on Strand Beach. I will keep G-Spot, Eden and J-Hoek in mind for another trip. On a related note: If anyone is looking for trails for the little ones in the Deep South: The following three have received some maintenance from local kids during Lockdown Level 4 and see kids on a daily basis these days: - Chapman's Peak Drive, Noordhoek side, by the booth - Fish Hoek / Sun Valley, Kommetjie Road, perfect for the lightest ones - Black Hill MTB, on Glencairn Expressway across from Stonehaven
  21. I was guessing so, but I couldn't figure out if they really are. Thanks for the heads up. Their network is quite big. Where would you start? Is Southey also open, as I think it's a public park?
  22. Awe, It's a bit unclear to me these days which trails in the greater Cape Town area are open. I'd like to take my 5 year old son away for the day to either trails on farms around Somerwet West and/or Stellenbosch. He can push a hill or two and on the Green Belts and in Deep South we manage about 15K in a day or 30K a week. Does anyone have any ideas? Open pump tracks, open farms with easy trails? Dirtopia? Highly appreciated.
  23. Sorry, shared at the same time apparently. Anyway, ****** up.
