  1. I really hope so. Most weather sites do not show weather for the area between Harrismith and Mooirivier, although from what I can gather it will be around 20-25 degrees most days, with a 30% chance of light rain for every day. We'll just have to see what it's like on the day I guess.
  2. I am sure it will be fine. This is not the standard for a service- just when you need to replace most of the moving parts. My first step is getting the right tools. (starting with a bar fridge, I got the Tunes already! )
  3. So true... I would never be able to afford the Bianchi Oltre.. But it still gives me a party in my pants every time I see one in the shops...
  4. That is actually still something that I want to do in future. I had a little fixie project, which I just finished, and it was quite a learning experience. Baby steps for now, will get there one day.
  5. True. At the end of the day you have to decide whether it is worth it for you (and not the editor of some mag). I'm not complaining, those parts need replacement because of several hours of fun - but seeing the prices of things every now and then does come as a shock!
  6. A bit off topic, but never mind the cost of a new bike... When last did you have to replace a bunch of things on your bike? My MTB went in for a service today, the LBS just phoned. Almost R 5000 for a service. NOW, I am not complaining, because this includes a free hub body, shock service, BB, headset, new tyres and a new cassette. BUT, the cost of a replacing these is 25 % off the value of my bike. If I have to do this four times in the time that I own my bike, I would have paid 40k for a 20k bike. (and would have had many priceless hours of fun on it )
  7. NO no no no no no no no NO! I am still in Natal after the Berg and Bush on the 2nd of Nov. Time to do some re-planning... I can't miss this!!
  8. I missed out on the race this weekend, so I can't relate to all of your questions, but here is my advice: Make Van Gaalens your playground! Every time that you ride it you will be able to do more of it (it also becomes more enjoyable every time you do it!). Having been there 4 times in the last month, I can say that you learn quickly on Van Gaalens.
  9. Thanks for the advice.. decided on Race King, Mountain King combo, for now. Last week before the Great trek and I can't wait!!
  10. Running Rocket Rons at the moment, which won't work, they're as thin as they are light. The back tyre almost needs replacement, So I suppose I can buy two new tyres and convert...
  11. If you are still on tyre-liners and slime (and have had very few issues with punctures, touch wood), is it worth it to go tubeless before the race? No tubeless rims, so will need a conversion (I am asking for a friend of mine, ofcourse )
  12. I recently bought two rims from CRC, the total price was about R1700 and I paid roughly R250 for VAT.
  13. Without reading all six pages- I have just had brilliant service from chain reaction: I ordered some rims three weeks ago, those arrived within 7 days. I had to wait two weeks before having them built (waiting for some hubs), but could finally have them built yesterday. An hour later the LBS phones me with the news that one rim is bent... The braking surface next to the valve hole was completely bent in... (I was not lus for the admin). I email CRC, they requested pictures, and one day later a new rim is on the way! No returning of the wheel, no filling out forms - simply: 'here's a new one'. I am sure that it is the right thing to do anyway, but I was expecting way more admin!
  14. So I heard that there's a Jozi Hustle tomorrow night from the new commuter store in Juta street... How does this work? Tell me more!
  15. Or, like mooky said: just ride your bike.
  16. I wonder how many people were caught out by this. ????
  17. So after @CriticalMassJhb retweeted thatthere will be a second event of Run Jozi, I jump to enter the event. I was super bummed that I missed the first event; running through the city at night must be awesome! Then after I entered, I had a looked at the event details (which they only reveal sparingly). It's not in Joburg CBD - it starts in Sandton It's not at Night - it starts at 09:00 O well. First world problems... I'm sure it will be fun either way.
  18. Stone cradle is a good place to park, it adds a 7 km stretch of road. At the kloofzicht circle, you can turn either left or right and do a 'loop' of the cradle. For a bit more distance there are some extra roads that you can take, for example the Makiti road or the Elandsdrift road. Just be careful when using the road to Hekpoort (Maropeng) there is no shoulder on that road. Here is a very rough description of the route. Doing the loop and going to makiti is just short of 60. http://goo.gl/maps/2wY9V
  19. I've been waiting six days to post in this fred.... This just arrived from CRC  . Just waiting for some Flip Flop hubs, then they will be added to my commuting bike..
  20. I say make the tour a fun ride... Everyone gets a medal and no one cares whose medal is taken away.
  21. Definitely right. Whether Armstrong is guilty or not, it is a very sad day for cycling.
  22. I'm sure that there are a couple of brilliant okes, but I would suggest Neville from Linden Cycles. The old man knows his stuff!
  23. Thanks, powdercoat it will be then.
  24. So I finally managed to get some Alu deep rims for my little fixie project! My LBS said that they will build wheels for me, but they only have black spokes. Is there somehere (in JHB) where I can buy white spokes? I would prefer to just buy a set, so that I don't need to have the black ones powder coated. O ja, its 700c.
  25. Glad to hear this! It'll be a very sad day when the jensie retires. That man is the definition of 'not giving up'.
