  1. Shimano introduces a new drivetrain technology today, Linkglide. It’s designed not to be the lightest weight but to prioritise durability and shift performance. It also represents something of a fork in the road for the brand’s drivetrains. There will still be Hyperglide+, and this will remain the lightweight fast shifting performance range, while Linkglide will sit alongside their current offerings, as opposed to replacing them. Shimano claims that their testing shows that Linkglide cassettes are 300% more durable than prior Hyperglide cassettes, and three times less degradation to the cassette should mean fewer chain skips, more mileage, and better shifting long into the cassette’s lifespan. Linkglide will be available in either 10 speed Deore (RD-M5130-SGS) or 11 speed Deore XT (RD-M8130-SGS).Before we all celebrate too quickly, there is one small catch - the Linkglide technology, while introduced in Deore 1x10 or XT 1x11 speed as a highly durable option, is not cross compatible or retrofittable with current drivetrains due to different gear pitches. All Linkglide components will feature a logo to differentiate them from their stablemates. A CS-LG600-11 11-50T XT cassette, pictured, weighs 780g. The CS-LG600-10 11-43T Deore cassette is slightly lighter at 634g.The teeth of Linkglide cassettes are made from plated steel with a new shape to reduce wear and tear. The teeth feature a thicker and more robust construction to prevent wear in the areas that experience the most degradation over time. Linkglide cassette teeth are also taller and stronger towards the tips to prevent chain skipping and tooth deformation, even as the miles add up. Sprockets 11T, 13T, 15T of the cassettes are replaceable. The Linkglide cassettes also feature a new shifting gate design and position, enabling the chain to move smoothly across the sprockets. These gates aim to reduce pedal shock or jumps during shifting, providing better pedaling fluidity and smoother pedaling performance. The SL-M8130-R XT shifter; the SL-M5130-R Deore shifter is available with an optional shift window. Two new shifters, again Deore and XT, are available. The XT has multiple clamping options whereas the Deore makes do with a simple band. The shifters use a different pull ratio to the rest of Shimano's range so are not compatible with non-Linkglide systems. They are, however, somewhat interchangeable with each other thanks to a linear pull ratio. That means an 11 speed shifter will work on a 10 speed derailleur. Linkglide cassettes are compatible with standard HG freehubs. To accompany the new Linkglide cassettes, there are also new Deore XT and Deore derailleurs and shifters. The derailleurs feature Shimano’s Shadow RD+ low profile design and clutch mechanism. All Linkglide drivetrains use a common chain design, regardless of the number of cogs on the cassette. Existing 11-speed Shimano chains are compatible with Linkglide drivetrains. It’s perhaps also worth noting that all Shimano 11-speed chains are currently e-bike rated or e-bike designed.
  2. Hi Guys, I'm a newbie looking for advice on picking between two cassettes: SHIMANO SLX 10 SPD CASSETTE (HG81) SHIMANO XT 10 SPD CASSETTE (M771) I don't care about weight, I'd just choose the more durable of the two. I plan on using it with this chain: SHIMANO XT 10 SPD CHAIN (HG95) Any help would be very appreciated.
  3. The topic title pretty much says it all... I have two sets of XT M8000 brakes and, naturally, I'm a little confused (and concerned/irritated) by all the comments regarding modulation and other issues. And equally so by all the praise showered on the M7000 set, since I spent more on mine. I haven't had any issues since fitting either set around 6 months ago. And whenever I speak to guys at Revolution cycles and This Way Out, everyone prefers the M8000 over the M7000 and doesn't know of any issues either. On the Hub, however, there are a lot of people who talk about the M8000 set as if it were a bad flu going around that they're pretty chuffed to have dodged. So what gives? Surely any real issues would have been corrected relatively quickly?
  4. I managed to strip the thread on my crank arm, and am wondering if it would be strong enough to ut in a helicoil. Otherwise it's a crank arm replacement. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Help please! I bought an M8000 XT brakeset that came with Shimano finned resin pads. They worked perfectly and I really liked them. I never rode in the rain and only commuted short distances. After about two weeks, the rear pads are squealing like crazy and not stopping me at all. I have to pull down really hard on the brake lever, and even then I can't get the rear wheel to lock and slide. The front still works well. I really don't see how the rear pads could have been contaminated because the rotors were brand new and fitted with the brakeset. Obviously contamination can happen so easily though. Does anyone have experience with these resin pads and know how I might repair them? Also, if I can't fix them, would you recommend a metal pad replacement (finned shimano)?
  6. Hi Hubbers Don't miss out on our goupsets specials today only!! 1. SRAM Eagle GXP 12 speed Groupset. RRP R8995 now only R6995!!! https://www.evobikes.co.za/sram-gx-eagle-groupset-175mm-1x12.html
  7. Hi guys, I need to buy replacement pads for my XT brakeset. Can anyone recommend a durable metal or sintered set? From what I can see, CWC has the genuine metal pads with cooling fins for R399 and a couple of other cheaper options: RESPONSE SINTERED DISC PADS (XT/XTR) R170 RESPONSE SEMI METAL DISC PADS (XT/XTR) R170 SHIMANO XTR 980 DISC PADS METAL (G04TI) R299 Does anyone have experience with these or could you recommend another option? I'm not even certain whether the cheaper two sets above fit the M8000 calipers. Thanks for your help
  8. Hi Guys, I have a 32T chainring with 11-46 cassette on my softtail 26er (1x11 Shimano XT). I'm trying to decide between the exact same setup on my 29er hardtail vs the following: 30T with 11-42 cassette (also XT). Bottom line: I do a lot of climbing and I'm not an avid downhill rider. I feel the 32T with an 11-42 cassette might be tough on the steep hills. And the best priced upgrade kits I'm seeing on the hub are with the 11-42 cassette. Do you think the 30T option could be a good one (i.e. comparable to 32T with 11-46 cassette)? Thanks for your help
  9. Hi Everyone I have a question. Would a pedal that is pretty much identical to a Shimano XT pedal sell? The info: 10 grams heavier, sealed bearings over the loose ball bearings in xt's. They will retail around R500 cheaper then the Shimano XT pedals. The pedals will come with a 6 month warranty. What does everyone think?
  10. I fitted a new Shimano XT clutch rear derailleur to my trail bike two years ago when I built it up from new. I went for 1x10 setup using a 42 expander and a 32t n/w chainring. A year or so in and I started dropping the chain quite regularly. I replaced the chain, cassette, expander as well as the chain ring (which was quite worn given a poor chain line, which was corrected with the new chainring). Soon after this I'd occasionally still drop my chain. I shortened the chain to what was possible with the bike "fully compressed" in the lowest gear and all the air released from the rear shock. And frustratingly I'd still drop my chain (yes, the clutch was always engaged). Did a little google research and found that the clutch unit on XT and XTR clutch derailleurs could be adjusted by simply removing the plastic clutch cover on the derailleur and tightening the adjuster screw. The recommendation was to tighten in quarter turn increments given the derailleur's sensitivity to these adjustments. I was not aware of this prior to reading reading one of the articles. I removed clutch cover hoping that the adjustment would sort out my chain dropping issues. To my surprise the "cam unit" was broken (at this stage I did not know this part is called a cam unit)! This is the first time the clutch cover was removed and neither had I ever caught the derailleur against a rock etc. My first thought was oh fook, I need a new derailleur. Then thought of asking if any fellow hubbers had a trashed derailleur from which I could salvage the "cam unit". Then did a little more research only to discover that the cam unit (now discovered its name) commonly fails/breaks and can easily be replaced. I found the replacement unit on bike-components.de at the exorbitant price of EUR1.64. I ordered 4 units (along with a new campy chorus group set for my new road bike build...). Hopefully all arrives in the next week or two. Hopefully dropped chains will be a thing of the past as I honestly do not know how long I've been riding with a broken clutch unit. The derailleur still functions normally, just without the clutch. A pic of where the unit sits in the derailleur (sorry, pic's a little out of focus), the broken cam unit cage as well as the replacement part taken from the bike-components.de website. Hope my experience helps anybody else in trying to ID one possible reason for a dropped chain when using an XT clutch derailleur. Edit: changed bikediscount.de to bike-components.de
  11. I'm currently riding a Scott Spark 930 and I've upgraded it to a XT 1x11 and I have a XT stages power meter on it. I really enjoy the ride and I'm considering a new set of wheels (American Classic Wide) or "maybe" carbon South Industries. The issues comes in when you start looking at the numbers to upgrade VS buying new. My core challenge I have with "upgrading" the wheels and perhaps other bits and pieces, brakes (from deore --> XT), is whether or not the "platform" as in the frame is worth it to upgrade on. Considering costs, I'm looking at the following: - Wheels 8-20k - XT brakes 3k - Misc (handlebar, stem etc) - R3k - And we haven't discussed possible DI2 / 2x11 config. - And and we haven't looked at the front fork. So the upgrade costs (ex DI2) puts me in the R15k - R20k range to spend. Considering the bike is 18months old, I feel I could get R25k for it second hand, putting me in the R50k range to purchase new. I'm a touch undecided on the path forward. Any cool ideas or tips would be appreciate. Cheerio

  14. Hi all, I'm currently looking at buying a new entry level dual suspension MTB and would appreciate some advice on which would be best, or if there are any other suggestions that you would recommend. The bikes I'm considering buying are: 1. 2016 Giant Anthem X 29er at R30k (https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/anthem.x.29er/22201/84034/#specifications) 2. 2017 Merida One Twenty XT at R33k (http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bikes/full-suspension/trail/2017/one-twenty-xt-edition-6381.html) Edit: Another option is a 2016 Cannondale Rush 1 at R25k (http://www.treadmtb.co.za/bikes-cannondale-rush-29-1/) Thanks!
  15. Hi Guys, Can one replace and/or overhaul the bearings inside the Shimano XT M780 SPD pedals??
  16. Today I broke my rear derailleur while riding on the Spruit. I'd like to thank all those that stopped to try help me and those that offerered to help while I walked back from the Virgin Active to the Trailhead. The derailleur either needs to be fully replaced or the part that broke replaced (possibly with a second hand part). I think the part that broke is called the derailleur cage. It is an XT 10 speed. Can anyone please advise where the best place to get the job done in JHB is at a reasonable cost. As the weekend & public holiday is coming up I'd like to sort this out ASAP. I can't seem to find the price for a rear XT derailleur on the service providers websites that I've looked at so far. Thanks!
  17. Hi there everyone! I want to upgrade my current mtb groupset and yes as always weight plays a big role. Currently running Shimano XT 1x11 and Simano XT brakes. Best way to upgrade? *XTR *XO1 *XX1 Please share thoughts and is it worth spending that extra money for better groupset?
  18. So my XT brake lever died (M785). I disassembled it (including the parts you are not supposed to disassemble) and basically it's buggered. Frustration is that Shimano do not bring individual levers into the country anymore. sooo does anyone have one going begging somewhere I can buy? Or does someone have one with a broken blade that I can have (or salvage parts off)
  19. I'm looking to upgrade to Shimano XT shifters. I noticed i spec shifters and like the fact that they bolt straight to the brake lever. As far as I can tell it doesn't have the gear indicator line but not a big deal for me. I very much like the simplicity and "clean" look (only one clamp each side on the cockpit). So now here is the thing: How can you check to see if the brake lever is i spec compatible? Bike is a 2014 Anthem X1 with stock SLX brakes (don't have the exact model number at hand) - it is a new bike so I'd assume it will be fine BUT we all know assumption is the mother of all... Hope someone can shed some light on this - thanks!!
