  1. Morning all, Do you know someone in the Midrand/Jo'burg area that can do a bit of machining and can braze thin wall tubing. I want to manufacture a few parts for a project bike. This is more at a hobbyist level - its not that complicated and I don't want to break my bank. Thanks, have a great day David
  2. where are all the parts hiding ? ???? Where else does a home builder look for parts ? Other than bike hub or Facebook market place ? surely there are some “ hidy holes “ with all the good stuff hidden in ? ???? in need of some parts to finish off a bike and I just keep coming up short on finding them after watching the classifieds more than what’s deemed healthy ???? If anyone can assist id be really stoked with any contact or if you have the parts and they are not in use I’ll buy them ???? I need to complete the drive train on my gravel bike currently running a mis match and it drives my OCD out the window. i need the following 1X 11 or (1 x10at a push ) sram or shimano rear mech (force, ultegra etc) shifters (road /gravel ) And flat mount callipers to match (ultegra , force etc) thanks in advance ! From a very eager home mechanic ????
  3. Howsit I need to get my road bike rebuilt. which bike shop would you guy recommend? i need a shop that is pedantic about it. making sure everything it torqued and centered. I would do it myself but i just dont have as much faith in my building skills when it comes to the Road things.
  4. Hi I have some great MTB carbon rims (NOBL33's) and need to build them up. Any recommendations on a great wheel builder? I stay in Cape Town. Thanks JL
  5. Looking for a vintage (late 60s to early 80s) DHC bicycle frame, any condition, size aprox. 58 to 60cm CTC. Needed for special build project to replace my fathers stolen bicycle that he owned for over 30 years!!! Any suggestions, advice, or assistance in getting this project off the ground will be much appreciated. Thanks.
  6. TokaiMTB Volunteer Build Day 3rd June 2017, 9am - 3pm Join us for the next Volunteer Build Day of 2017! This build day takes place on Saturday the 3rd June at 9am. We'll be working on DH3 again! Thanks to the last build day, as well as the efforts of the Trail Tarts, the 2nd Bergvliet & 1st Steenberg Scout groups and a couple other intrepid volunteers, we should be able to open the lower extension of DH3 after this build day! After this, there will need to be a bit more material put into the trail in order to secure long-term sustainability (clay, clay, clay) and to get final shaping done, but with the basic trail being open, this could be done bit by bit and we can get back to enjoying DH3 in all its (NEW! IMPROVED!) glory. Vasbyt is now open again, and seems to be getting rave reviews from those who have ridden it. There are still a few areas which need additional material (clay and stone to replace sand) but that can be dealt with in good time. If anyone has a spare wheelbarrow, please bring it along to the build day, we'll be moving some material! Bring your hats, a spade or metal rake, sunscreen and plenty of water. A snack/lunch may also be useful! So - as normal, there are limited slots available. Please RSVP as soon as possible by filling in the form at the link below. See you on Saturday! As usual, please try to be there a little before 9am so that we leave nobody behind. Register here: http://eepurl.com/cQyhy5 Regards The TokaiMTB team.
  7. I have an open question to all the Hubbers out there: Do you think there is room for bamboo bikes on the SA cycling stage? There are some very good arguments for bamboo bikes, but yet we don't see them around our races, on training rides or in the streets parked outside nice coffee bars. How do you think this observation is to be explained? Looking forward to your words of wisdom and insight. CB
  8. Howdy Hubbers, First off, I'm going to ask silly questions, if you're unable to help, please don't comment with rubbish as I'm trying my first ever build since swapping BMX frames in high school. Right, so I have a donor bike which is a Silverback Sierra 26" (Assuming a 2010 - 2012 region model), I bought her used a year ago after my entry lever Silverback Slade 4 650b was no longer doing the trick for me and upgrading components would have costs more in the end, unfortunately the frame was a bit bent at the right chainstay (I bent her straight and rode like that for a year until now) Then this week, I bought a Mongoose Meteore Comp Frame 26" G7 alloy, the frame is in amazing condition but I have no idea of the year model. So in my innocence I assumed it would be a simple swap between two 26er frames, this was not to be as I found out after stripping the Silverback almost bare (excluding the BB as I'm still deciding on buying a tool or not) * My first issue I bumped into was the Seatpost Diameter - this was sorted by picking a used one up from a friend, easy peasy. * 2nd issue: The headset diameters seem to differ, the silverback is a 44mm and the mongoose looks like it used just over 41mm headset It never came with headset caps so now I need to know, where do I get caps from and do I buy new bearings too? When taking the old setup apart, the top of the headset used a cartridge bearing and the bottom had a loose pack bearing with a little plastic frame to hold them (this was a surprise as I spent some time hunting down all the bearings after them spilling out when I removed the fork) Can I at the same time "upgrade" the headset to take the cartridge top and bottom or do I stick to the current setup? There are also several of these metal and plastic o-ring type of things, should these be replaced too (and what order do they go back in, I forgot because I was chasing bearings across the floor)? Further upgrades I'm planning. 1. Upgrade rear derailleur to a Shimano Zee with a 10 spd shifter (on back order) 2. Upgrade to a 10 spd casette (will deore be fine or is slx the way, 36t or 34t?) 3. Ergo - fit bike setup and new saddle (looking at the WTB options) So that's where I'm stuck at the moment, where to go next, any other issues to look out for?
  9. Hi to all. Yesterday I bought a Cannondale F29 alloy 2. I was super excited to go home and weigh the bike but was quite disappointed when the scale tipped over at 11 ish KG. So now I come to you weight weenies to help me shred a few grams. The bike is currently has : Front wheel: Stan's ZTR Crest on a lefty hub with Rubena tires. Suspension: Cannondale lefty Handlebar : Cannondale handle bar Stem: Cannondale stem Frame: F29 alloy 2 (2013) Pedals : Shimano XT Seat post : Cannondale stock post Seat : Cannondale seat Crankset :Shimano XT Brakes: Shimano XT Shifters :Shimano XT Chain: Shimano XT Cassette: Shimano XT Rear Derailleur: Shimano XT Rear Hub :Shimano Deore Rear Rim :WTB frequency race i19 with a Rubena tyre. I think that is about all the stuff that make the numbers on the scale rise. I am going to convert the bike to a 1x10 setup and plan to change the rear wheel to a ZTR Crest. is the rim change worth it, and where else can I save a few grams without having to rob a bank. I would like to keep every thing on the bike aluminium so carbon seatpost and stem is out. Any suggestions welcome.
  10. Hi Guys, I am in the process of building up a bike for a new friend. He is a teacher with limited financial resources. I lend him my bike and took him for a spin at Red Barn. He loved every moment of it. I promised myself that I will slap together a MTB for this guy to call his own. I contacted a few friends and went to my spares bin. I bought a few parts via the classifieds on the hub. I managed to get together a 26" frame, rear suspension and a number of bits and pieces. Unfortunately I am still in need of a few spares. The big items are a Shock, rear wheel and handlebar. Anybody on this forum interested in donating a few old pieces or interested in selling it to me for a steal? Please feel free to have a look at our website: http://bombcenturion.wix.com/bombcenturion or check us out on facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bomb-Centurion/350233275079058 to see what we do. We have donated a number of bikes to guys and girls. We are not in divernick's category when it comes to building and donating bikes, but we do what we love and what we can. Thanks for considering. PS Pics will obviously be posted at some stage. :-)
  11. Hi, so I've ordered a Giant Anthem 27.5 1. I ask my LBS not to build the bike as I would like to this on my own. Will I need a torque wrench? How complete is the bike in the box. From what I've seen on the net, I'll just have to put on pedals, the front wheel, the handlebar already has the shifter and brakes on, just need to connect it to the stem, and lube the chain. Will probably also need to adjust pressure and sag in fork and shock.... Am I missing anything?
