Hi, I am brand new to this forum and generally new to cycling. After flying my Raleigh RC6000 back from Cape Town I took it for a ride and managed to get the rear derailer to hook the spokes and break the hanger. Replaced the hanger and found the rear derailer has a piece broken off so it clicks when riding.

I am now looking to replace the rear derailer with a Veloce at R838 or can I fit the Corus carbon derailer for R1100 both 10spd.

Also how do I tell if the old one is a small or medium?

As far as I know, any Campag 10sp rear derailleur will work with any Campag 10sp shifters.

Small or medium refers to the cage length - the distance between the pulleys on the derailleur cage. The centre to centre distance between the pulleys on my short cage derailleur is about 57mm. Looking at some pictures, the distance for a medium cage will be about 70mm.

It's most likely you have a short cage as medium cage is only used when you fit bigger cassettes like 12-27, 13-29 etc.

You can buy new cages for Campag deraillers. How's that for good news? But what piece broke off? Isn't it just a pulley tooth? Fix it and don't spend your pension money on a new one.

Edit: I see usual flies are buzzing around again.

What I indended to say was that Campag parts for derailers are avaialble. New derailers are kinda expensive and therefore it may be economicaly worthwhile to order the part and put the money you save into your pension fund.

I know I didn't phrase it like that but no sarcasm or slight was intended with my first ill-phrased comment.

his pension ???? it's not often you say something funny on the HUB - so once again we bow down in the shadow of your greatness. besides he will need to re-bond his house never mind his pension

Thanks guys for the replies, replacing the broken part would be a better option financially. It's not the cage that is broken but a piece that clips behind the hanger to tension the chain.

I will take a picture tonight and post.

This part?

It looks like any RD, made between about 2001 and 2008, from Centaur down has that part (RD-VL009). The newer ones and the Chorus and Record 10sp ones have part number RD-RE116.

Some Campag spare parts are not always easy to find locally, so you might have more success finding a second hand/broken RD and stripping it for spares.

I believe this is a medium cage. Centre to Centre on the pulleys is 90mm.

I post the picture to demonstrate how versatile Campy can be. I purchased this cage so that I can convert a bike with a double chainring to a triple, replacing as few parts as possible. Here we could save the customer's existing RD.

The separate round piece on top is the B-tension device. It's teeth engage with a worm gear (obscured in the 20-past position next to the post) that adjusts the B-tension - neat!
