My neighbour was mugged two weeks ago on Rustenburg Road between Congo and Carlow Roads in Auckland Park just below the BP garage two weeks ago by three guys armed with knives. He was riding by himself.

I have just been told of another incident this morning. A single rider was again attacked by a group of two or three men armed with knives at 07:20 this morning and his cellphone, etc. and bike taken.

It looks like this is a gang now operating in the area and since this road is highly used by cyclists is a worrying problem. Even more so as it is in a densely populated, urban area.

A couple of us will be riding it alone (with our two friends Smith & Wesson on standby) to see if we can find these ****ers...

Please be careful guys!

guys just be very very careful, take R100 with you just in case you need bail money, that should cover the most serious of crimes easily.

It will be WITH the police (Parkview Reservists), but thanks for the concern!

Hi

The guy who was bike jacked was me. I was on that section on Road - riding from Emmarentia to Aucklandpark - just on the corner, before the road bends to the right - where there is a slight drop off on your left towards the park and Barry Hertzog and a concrete wall on your right. There were 4 guys, one came at me and hit me with a concerte facia board (thank God for Helmets cause he broke mine with the clot). Got off my bike and had a bit of a scuffle with the other two who were on either side of me while the 4 took my bike. The 1st guy who hit me then came at me with a knife - not cool at all as the look in his eyes said he was keen to lodge that somewhere in me. He then turn around and ran.

I think that it might be a good idea to hang around there next week with you guys - I have a bike to find

Damn. sorry to hear. With the usual SA placation: I'm glad you're OK. So it was further up towards the B/Herzog park side?

A mate of mine (Ralph) called me and gave me the details - he apparently met you and asked me to pass on the warning.

As for your bike, it's probably in Hillbrow (that's where most of the muggers come from on that side). What bike was it? Have you reported the incident? Do you have a description of the bastards?

I'm having a meeting with the Parkview Reservists tomorrow to try and hatch a plan to get these guys (I can't go out and do it myself as I retired from the Reservists last year). I'll let you know what transpires.

I'm quite worried as I ride this section every week with my kids...

Yes, it was further up, just before the bend in the road - there are great places to hide and not much you can do if your on your bike. I did not meet Ralph which makes me wonder and hope that it was just me and not more. As for the bike in Hillbrow, that is what the cop said too - he said that these guys will trade it for R100 - R200 just to get some cash for food or beer. What i dont understand is why the knife - beat me up a bit, take the bike, but do you need the knife?

The bike was a Giant TCR - black with white and yellow flecks. Did report it and have a description of only the one guy with the knife - but it is a bit blurry. As for a plan to see if we can catch these guys - count me in. I think bikers need to be a bit more proactive in this regards. As for your kids and you riding, i think later in the day, or maybe around Emmarentia, Greenside area.

Yep. I had a chat to the Parkview Reservists on Tuesday and they asked for more information.

I have obtained statements from both guys. The attacks were exactly the same (except the

second had 4 guys), but the m.o.'s were carbon copies. Both happened around the same

time at exactly the same spot - Sunday morning, single rider at about 07:00. One suspect attacked

both with a cement/asbestos plank and threatened them with a knife while the others took the goods.

Here's the google maps link:

I have collated this and have passed it onto the Parkview Reservsts who will hopefully get back to me

with a plan of action from here.
